2025 Padres Season
Quote from Randy Manese on March 29, 2025, 10:58 pmWanted to give a Shout Out to Maldonado for calling a great game today. His sequencing of pitches and framing (ump had a very tight strike zone), really helped Vasquez and Jacob, in particular. I don't know if he was supposed to play games back to back, but I believe Diaz got nicked a little bit in the opener so maybe there was no other option. Both he and Diaz look so steady behind the plate and that's got to have helped get us off to a great start in the 2025 season.

From what I've read Wade already cleared. He's deciding whether he wants to stay in the organization or elect free agency.

As long as they’re legal they can use whatever they wish. We’ll see if it starts to spread around the league or if it’s just a coincidence and the Yankees home runs slow down

As long as legal (2.61" max diameter) no problem. Looks as all they have done is taper the end to reduce weight and therefore increase bat speed.
Players have been hollowing out the end to shed some weight for a long time. Tapering strategy from the handle to the sweet spot has be different depending on the hitter for years.
We will see if a notable difference over the long run ... or was this just a product of a very good hitting team being hot.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 1, 2025, 5:55 amPadres face a LH SP for the first time since opening day. Wonder if they will give Croney and Arraez a break besides putting Lockridge in for Heyward. Have to keep a red-hot Sheets in the line-up, so likely Gurriel takes over at 1b.
It will be an interesting line-up for Shildt to devise since Padres will likely face 2 LH SP when they play the Cubs in their home opener in Chicago. Imanaga is one of the better LH SP around, so it will be a challenge to get some runs on the scoreboard. Cubs finally at home after a very long time on the road, opening early in Japan followed by Arizona and Sacramento. Sometimes that's an advantage for the visiting team.

Yeh, some interesting choices given how the LHH are performing. Allen is not the strongest SP in the mix. However, need to get some RHH some ABs (thinking Iglesias first and foremost).
Lockridge in for Heyward is an easy call. After that could go a few ways.
First at this point no one needs a rest but the RHH bench needs ABs. First issue is Sheets ... red hot so keep him in the line-up vs a history of not hitting LHP ... Gurriel needs AB to get ready for the Cubs LHSP ... does Shildt want to see if the "new" Sheets can hit LHP ... tricky.
Could see Iglesias in for Cronenworth but how much does Shildt want to find out if Cronenworth has improved vs LHP since he is the 2B starter who will see LHP in relief?
Guessing he does not want to sub for Arraez and would prefer to let Arraez hit his way out of a slump. Not as though Gurriel is a lock to be better even if RHH.
Maybe over thinking but given Allen is has a good chance of not lasting long and will be sub with a RHP ... maybe Shildt might think Tatis, Machado, and Bogaerts combined with the contributions from the LHH gets Allen out and the Padres are better set-up with the LHH in the line-up vs the RHP RP.

Quote from fenn68 on April 1, 2025, 5:06 pmWade has cleared waivers and has agreed to get assigned to El Paso.
Given the lack of ML quality depth in EP ... Wade with his versatility, speed is useful insurance even in not a great ML hitter.
Think we hear on Rosario soon (tomorrow)?

Quote from Randy Manese on April 2, 2025, 7:22 amAlthough the Padres are now 6-0, they have run into outs by being very aggressive on the base paths, i.e., trying to take the extra base on hits or trying to plate the runner from third base. In years past, most Padres fans would throw up their hands and murmur under their breath that doing that was a bad play because the likelihood of success was very low. However, with this team it has proven to be a strategy to force the other team to execute the play flawlessly or give the Padres the advantage and it has worked. That constant pressure put on the other team's defense, particularly if that defense is a little bit suspect, really has paid dividends so far.
Undoubtedly, there are games when we lose because of that strategy but I like taking the chance and forcing the issue instead of being too passive. I think this is what ballplayers like to do and think they can do as long as there is a realistic chance to make it happen.
