2025 Padres Season
Quote from MrPadre19 on March 24, 2025, 9:20 pmI prefer Joe at the bottom of the lineup because he gets on base.
Thats what we need…guys at the bottom who can just get on for Tatis/Merrill/Manny

Quote from fenn68 on March 24, 2025, 9:33 pmKolek (great ST as a SP) and Marinaccio were optioned to EP along with Joe and Campusano. So, #4 and #5 to start the season are Hart and Vasquez.
Given their injuries I expect Hoeing, Reynolds, and Brito to go with Darvish to the IL. Oddly that gets the remaining pitchers down to the max 13 ... and that includes Rule 5 Nunez ... surprised. Maybe just until someone is healthy enough to return but still a surprise.
Roster is at 43 ... until Rosario and Wade are put on waivers officially ... so down to 41 with a set 26 man. Maybe one of the IL arms goes on the 60 day? Maybe Preller has a deal 2 for 1 or 1 for MiLer? Brito seems the most venerable since he was not optioned with the others and has been missing in action most of ST ... maybe he too is on waivers clearing the last slot?

Quote from fenn68 on March 25, 2025, 4:51 pmRule 5 Nunez returned to BALT .... so 40 man at 40 ... BUT 26 man active is down to 25 (12 pitchers) so expect an add.
Non confirmed rumor that non-roster Gillaspie will be added to the 40 / 26 thus requiring another move off the 40. TBD.

Quote from LynchMob on March 26, 2025, 2:14 pmRight-handed pitchers Breck Eichelberger, Henry Martinez, Seth Mayberry, and Efrain Contreras, as well as catcher Colton Bender and outfielder Cole Roederer were all released.
Efrain ... we had high hopes 🙁

Quote from ultratvfan on March 26, 2025, 6:19 pmBrett Sullivan was DFA, went unclaimed, and signed to a minor league contract with El Paso. He will not be on the 40-man roster. That is one way to remove him form the 40-man.

At the start of the winter the roster had Campusano and Sullivan as the incumbent pair expected as the ML catchers for 2025.
At the start of the 2025 season they are now the catchers for El Paso!

Quote from Randy Manese on March 27, 2025, 7:14 amLooking forward to a very competitive year. Despite the loss of Profar and Higgy, we'll have a healthy Arraez and Machado from the start of the season. It looks like some of that missing looseness in Tatis' swing is back and Merrill has flashed more power as he grows into maturity. Solid ST from both Cronenworth and Bogaerts will hopefully lengthen the line-up before we hit the platoon players and hitters with much lower expectations.
Despite injuries and losses to the bullpen, still have a strong group and that bodes well for the inevitable shuttle between EP and SD for the guys with options. Got a good healthy starting 3 with Darvish adding to that group when he is ready; wild cards in Hart and Vasquez but many teams have "substitute" pitchers early in the season because of injury or ineffectiveness. It seems Kolek has a future as a SP and Waldron has shown flashes of being effective.
All in all, a opening series split with a very tough team would be a good start for the 2025 season. GO PADRES!

Quote from Randy Manese on March 29, 2025, 3:34 amKeeping in mind that once a player is optioned to the minors and the team optioned to has already begun its season, a position player must stay in the minors for 10 days and a pitcher must stay for 15 days. Bring this up because Shildt has already heavily used 3 of his 4 RHPs for the 1st two games of the Atlanta series. With 4 LH RPs available, could LHP Cruz go down and a RH RP come up? Can't bring up Kolek or Marinaccio because of option rules, but can bring up Gillaspie, who almost made the 40-man to open the season.
Would require Padres move one of the 15 day list injured pitchers to the 60 day (probably Brito), option Cruz and then roster Gillaspie. Gillaspie had a solid ST and is experienced, going 3 innings in his last appearance. Moreover, don't necessarily need a 4/4 lefty/righty split in the pen, so my guess is that Gillaspie is brought up soon. Unfortunately, Gillaspie is out of options, so once brought up, he would have to be DFA'd to get off the 26/40-man but this seems to be a risk the Padres might make soon to ensure Adam, Estrada and Suarez are not overworked.
An exception to the option rules is if a player on the 26 man is injured and placed on either the 10 or 15 day injured list; don't think this would apply in the situation I described above.

Acee talked about this in his newsletter this morning. He brought up the possibility of adding Gillaspie. I feel like if they were going to do something like that they would have just taken him over Cruz from the start. It's also maybe worth noting that the Braves have 2 switch hitters and 3 lefties in their regular lineup. They also don't really have anyone coming off the bench that you would worry about going against a lefty. It could be tough if Jacob is the only right handed option available out of the pen, but maybe it's less of a concern given the matchup.
