2025 Padres Season

PreviousPage 21 of 68Next

Padres do still need to hit on some internal prospects at the ML level over the next few years but based on some Preller's comments post Merrill extension the going forward plan may be to very selectively sign "stars"/impact players to large long term deals then be creative at the low end with veterans (e.g. Iglesias, Sheets, etc).

That makes an extension for King and/or Arraez feasible (with some creativity). Clearly the Padres really like both and both seem to really like being Padres.

Great commitment by the owners.

Padres face red-hot Cubs who just completed a 3-game sweep of the A's in minor league ballpark Sacramento.  With the exception of Pivetta going against Boyd,  Cubs seem to have SP advantage as they open up a 6 game home stand after being on the road since opening up the season early in Japan in mid-March.

With 2 LHP facing the Padres, it will be interesting to see whether Gurriel, Lockridge and probably Iglesias in at least one of the two games can contribute offensively.  I'm hoping for us winning 2 of 3 but that opening game is going to be a very tough one against Imanaga.  Cubs then head back to the West Coast for another round against the Dodgers and Padres, so the schedulers did them no favors.  Here's hoping the Friar Faithful enjoy a winning series before headed back to California against those same A's the Cubs played in Sacramento.

GO PADRES!

Apparently the Padres have added RF Gonzales to the 40 man and immediately optioned him to EP ... probably to avoid an "opt out".

No idea who got taken off the 40 man for space ... could be Brito to the 60 day IL given his injury.

Also, the decision on Rosario should be today.

Concur, also because of his loud 2 HR game yesterday and strong ST, although got off to an otherwise slow start in EP.  Could be a little bit of a motivator for Gurriel, who needs to show some more success at the plate in the upcoming Cubs series against two LHPs.  For both Gurriel and Heyward, still expect Padres to keep both on the roster through at least April to give them every opportunity to bring more than just veteran presence to the team.  If they at least can handle the PH duties in clutch situations, their just above minimum league salaries will be worth it.  Gurriel's a much better 1b man than Sheets, but so is Joe, who likely would be the next one up as a RH bat vice Gonzalez.  Per Fangraphs, Gonzalez had 2 options left, so after this season, he still can can challenge for a back-up spot on the roster and is insurance in case of severe injury.

Brito to the 60 day to make room for Gonzalez. Eguy Rosario cleared waivers and has been out righted to El Paso. I'm surprised no one claimed Eguy. Happy to keep him in the system.

Claiming team would need to put Eguy on the 26 man. Hard to do at this point.

I thought a team like the White Sox or Marlins would take a chance on him. They wouldn't have had any problem making room. I still think he has huge upside. He must not be viewed that highly around the league.

Both Wade and Rosario re-signed with the Padres to a minor legue contract.

David Peralta is the only Padres free agent that has not yet signed with a team.

Something to watch over the season ... Arraez' ability to hit at PETCO.

From 2022-23, Arraez has much better stats in HOME games vs AWAY games (both were excellent).

In 2024, he continued to hit in AWAY games (320 AB ... .359 BA / .841 OPS) BUT at HOME ... some in Miami ... a major drop-off (317 AB ... .268 AB / .635 OPS). Add that his start to 2025 at PETCO was a disaster and in CHI had two hits.

Padres are saying all the right things about how much the like him BUT if this PETCO pattern holds ... the idea of re-signing Arraez is getting less appealing. If they let both Arraez and Cease go FA ... might be in a better financial position to go after a re-signing of King while dropping back under the luxury tax threshold.

Note that Arraez is currently making $14MM ... so will not re-sign cheaply unless he goes FA and finds no takers. Preller can probably do a lot to improve the team (and replace Arraez) if he has that $14MM+ to work with. All this assumes Arraez' PETCO pattern holds for 2025.

Just something to watch.

My guess is we let Arraez and Cease go and sign King long term.

Can’t keep all three…..Doubt we can keep two so this makes most sense.

Find a 1B in FA or via trade that can play every day.

Hopefully Yu and Joe are both healthy and ready March ‘26

King/Musgrove/Darvish/Pivetta/Vasquez

Should have multiple internal options for #6-#8 SP…maybe a couple that push Vasquez to BP
