Although landing Sasaki may very well play into what AJ wants/asks for in return for those guys.

I can't see a trade of Cease at all if no Sasaki...or certainly not unless a SP for '25 comes back in return.

Of course he's gonna want pitching no matter what....but landing Sasaki could influence whether that guy(s) have to be ready to go right now.

Yeh, doubt they deal Cease if they do not land Sasaki ... so the pivot point even if they sign Sasaki could be what they can fill in the next month (either FA or trade of Arraez, Suarez, or ?). IF the holes at C and LF get filled without trading Cease they may not trade him at all.

Basically can the Padres make moves to improve these slots without dealing Cease (or weakening another starter slot):

LF (Ornelas, Lockridge)

1B/DH (Ornelas, Lockridge, Wade, Rosario)

C (Campusano, Sullivan)

If so, holding on to Cease with a SP rotation of King, Cease, Darvish, and Sasaki ... they may not need to improve the other slots all that much ... just enough not to embarrass.

The Burnes trade from last year would probably be the best comparison for what you could expect to get for Cease. The Brewers got Joey Ortiz, D.L. Hall and a comp pick from the Orioles. It looks like Hall (97) and Ortiz (99) just made it into MLB Pipeline's top 100 coming into the year. The comp pick was pick #34 which turned out to be Blake Burke and gave them an extra 2.7m in pool money to work with.

One of the MLB.com guys suggested another trade with the O's that seems comparable. He suggested Heston Kjerstad, Enrique Bradfield and Cade Povich for Cease.

Actually that sounds good for the Padres ...

Kjerstad is a ML ready LF (25, 6 years control at minimum for the next three years) ... he can hit (LHH) and he would be the centerpiece ... step right into LF in 2025. Padres really don't have an OF coming in the system for years.

Povich (LHSP) is so so with some upside and a good K% in the minors ... only 24 and with 6 years control. Potential to be with the Padres in 2025 ... maybe start as #5 or LHRP.

Bradfield is a legit prospect but I might be tempted to negotiate for a different player ... in A+/AA ... big speed but no power so seems like a CF type and with Merrill around and putting Kjerstand in LF ... might get more impact from someone else.

With BALT's roster ... none seem destined for a starting slot in BALT in 2025 ... so make some sense for BALT.

Give some credit to the MLB.com guy ... seems like a balance feasible deal that helps both teams in 2025 and the Padres for years.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Dodgers are zeroing in on two standout names: free agent Tanner Scott and Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams.

Yankees signed top FA RP Devin Williams.

It is still early for Preller moves but as of now we should consider the ML potential (for the bench / LF / DH) of two of his minor league FA signings:

  1. Oscar Gonzales, corner OF ... 26 ... RHH ... had a very good season in CLEV in 2022 but fell off in 2023 and in the minors (but did well) in 2024. Could be a LF platoon with Ornelas. Has a bit of power.
  2. Yonathan Perlaza, 2B/OF ... 26 ... switch-hitter ... was in Korea last season (did well) and in 2023 did well in AAA for the Cubs.

With the core position players for the Padres very strong ... the supporting players just don't have to be bad to help the team ... even if just one of the two click the Padres are in good shape to fill weaknesses at a low cost for 2025.

If those guys work ... minimizes the need for trading some current players or spending on costly FA. Preller could do a wait and see to make the call during ST.

I think it would take a lot more than 1 year of Cease to get Basallo. He might be untouchable. The consensus seems to be that he's at least a top 10-15 prospect. It looks like Fangraphs had him at 1 on their in-season update. He's in a different tier of prospect.

I feel AJ could get creative if he wanted to badly enough...I'll get word to him.

I like the Cubs as a trade partner. They've got lots of upper level prospects and young players like Cade Horton, Ben Brown, Owen Caissie, Kevin Alcantara, James Triantos and Moises Ballesteros at positions of need for us. They've also got players like Suzuki and Bellinger who may allow for some creativity with salary swaps. After landing Tucker rumor has it they're after Luzardo. Clearly they're looking to make some aggressive moves. Maybe they'd be interested in Cease if they can't close a deal for Luzardo. I think they would line up well with us if it came to that.
