Quote from fenn68 on December 10, 2024, 3:01 pmFried to the NYY … 8 years (31 year old pitcher) and $218MM.
With Fried and NY out of the SP derby … Burnes is next in line with Boston and Toronto in hot pursuit. Beginning to make Cease at about $13-14MM a low cost trade chip with top of the rotation credentials … potential for a quality return if Preller deals him.

Quote from ultratvfan on December 11, 2024, 12:57 am33-year old 3B Arenado, who has a full no-trade clause, has the Dodgers, Padres and Angels on his wish list. But, would also be willing to accept a trade to the Phillies, Mets or Red Sox, per a source close to the negotiations.

The problem with him being on the Padres is that Machado is 3B. But, he could make a good DH.

Quote from fenn68 on December 11, 2024, 4:23 amMLBTradeRumors speculated on a the “potential” of a match between BOST and SD on a Cease trade (not an active rumor mind you).
BOST has made it clear that they will go all out for a top of the rotation arm … lost out on Fried, Snell, and Eovoldi … in hot pursuit of Burnes (expect a big contract and competition) and in on Sasaki … if those don’t happen a trade for Crochet is a target. If those don’t pan out (or just are not that appealing to BOST) … Cease could be the best trade option … they do have appealing prospects.
One potential trade chip was their RF Abreu… 25, LHH, 5 years control, league minimum. Hits and an excellent fielder in RF … BOST might deal him since their to prospect (Anthony) is also an OF. Note they have Teel a LHH catcher who is a Top 100 who also may fit s the lead return piece.
If Abreu … Padres could convert him to LF (that would give the Padres an elite defensive OF under control for 5 years with plus offense). That frees up $13MM that could be used for filling out the rest of the roster.
Carry that speculation down the rabbit hole … take that $13MM and sign Profar for 1B then trade Arraez and clear $14MM to be used for a catcher, another hitter (to cover DH), and/or #5 SP fill. IF they sign Sasaki, the end state would be a clear playoff contender even with the unknowns of bottom of the rotation SP.
With Cease and Arraez FA after the season … those moves would also set up a very strong 2026 recognizing little coming internal in 2026. Musgrove returns and cash would be on the table (higher CBT and Hosmer’s money off the books) could allow for a re-signing of King).
Pure exercise in if/then fantasy… but concept makes sense for the Padres given the financial need and maximizing the value of expiring assets (Cease, Arraez) while extending playoff contention beyond 2025.

Many complain about the Manny and Xander deals until they're 41 but a deal for a SP with injury history until he's 39 seems like much riskier.

Arenado has expressed willingness to move to 1B, so that would be a better defensive option than Arraez who could be DH unless traded to make room for Arenado's salary.

Arenado is due $32MM-$27MM-$15MM over the next 3 years … that does not fit the Padres.
STL would have to both eat most of the contract and NOT demand any key Padre prospects (and the Padres don’t have appealing depth of prospects). So, STL is not likely to entertain a Padre deal. Look to other teams for a better deal or wait until the trade deadline (or next winter) when his contract is more movable.

Agree … also this winter’s contracts are making the deals done with Tatis, Machado, and Bogaerts seem better as contract inflation is effectively shrinking the relative cost. Actually the deal with Cronenworth now around a reasonable $12MM is getting better each year (especially if he returns to 2B).
