2024 Padres Season
Quote from Alex Tamayo on August 24, 2024, 11:44 pmQuote from fenn68 on August 24, 2024, 7:50 amIf the METS are effectively eliminated by early SEP … Padres can really use that month to set-up for the playoffs. Padres have 5 off days in SEP and the longest run of games is 6 (twice and one ending the season on the road with LAD and AZ).
Might see them trying to save some starting arms … maybe pulling someone early or using a strategic 6th SP. Might see some more extensive use of the RP who are not considered high leverage options … giving them some extra work while saving some bullets in the key RP.
Same with the veteran offense options … some time off for Profar, Machado, Bogaerts, and Croney while allowing Solano and Peralta to keep sharp. Maybe some time off for Arraez to help his thumb heal.
Will be interesting to see how Shildt and Preller approach setting up for the playoffs.
Sounds good, but, I really believe the Padres should do everything in their power to grab at least the 1st wild card spot, If they don't and the Dbacks do, they will play ARZ at the end of the season, then, they will have to stay there and play the WC round against the same snakes, I know our BP is good, but, in the best case scenario we have the lead going into the 9th in ARZ, with them trying to walk off, I don't want any part of that. Much rather face the brewers and then the bums.

Quote from 3fingersplit on August 25, 2024, 4:58 amI don't mean to rain on your parade but there is a lot of baseball to be played and the talk of playoffs is premature. It wasn't so long ago that our Padres were well over .500, 15 games if I remember correctly, and then the collapse came and Jayce Tingler got fired because of it. Different year and different team BUT...it's baseball and any team can get on a heater like the Padres did...22-5 after the All Star break...this team was at .500 and any team can go on a prolonged skid so not to be a negative Nancy but pump the breaks on the playoffs talk...our Padres still have to play @ St Louis Cardinals, @Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, @Seattle Mariners, @San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, Chicago White Sox, @Los Angeles Dodgers, @ Arizona Diamondbacks...the playoffs are a hope but anything can happen...it's baseball.
Go Padres

You are right, I'll try to be a little more mesaured about It, it's not easy though, 😁

Quote from fenn68 on August 25, 2024, 1:23 pmPadres call up RHRP Lake Bacher (sent down Gillespie).
Don’t know how long he stays since the Padres need a SP for tomorrow but for today a fresh arm for the pen.
Looked at his EP record … some hope for upside:
AT EP: 34 innings … 5.45 ERA / 1.62 WHIP
AWAY; 33.1 innings … 2.73 ERA / 1.30 WHIP
So maybe pitching as sea level he is more like his AWAY stats? He does get more Ks than innings and he can go more than one inning per appearance.
Setting up to have a shuttle of RP from AAA to/from SD.

Quote from fenn68 on August 26, 2024, 6:54 amThe post-all star team records are great for the NL West races … and frustrating for all the teams that are winning but not pulling away. Consider in the NL the best winning records:
1. 26-8 ,,, AZ
2. 24-9 … SD
3. 22-12 … LAD
5. 19-16 … SF
Clearly the “power” in the NL has moved West.
Conversely, the NL East was touted early as the “power” with PHIL, ATl, and NYM but since the All-Star break:
14-20 … PHIL
17-18 … ATL
19-17 … NYM
It is a game of streaks … so SEP can change the fate of all these teams.

Quote from brent wolff on August 26, 2024, 7:38 amOnly 30 games remaining for the Pads.
Go 15-15 = 89-73.
Go 16-14 = 90-72.
Go 17-13 = 91-71.
Go 18-12 = 92-70.
Where do we end up? What does everyone think?

Quote from fenn68 on August 26, 2024, 5:56 pmPadres sign veteran catcher Elias Diaz to a MINOR LEAGUE contract. He was released by COLO on August 16th and, apparently, turned down some other offers at the ML level. He is 33 and coming off a decent 3 year contract.
Wonder what the Padres have as an arrangement with him? Having cleared waivers, COLO is paying the remainder of his contract … so money should not be the selling point.
With the playoffs on the horizon … Diaz becomes a good veteran insurance policy for Higashioka and Campusano. Maybe Diaz is added as the Sept 1 extra position player (that would appeal to Diaz) and serve as another RHH DH option? Unlikely.
Even more unlikely is the Padres have worked out an understanding for 2025 that brings Diaz back (also could appeal to Diaz) considering that Higashioka is a FA and, frankly, Campusano has not played up to expectations.
Just curious from Diaz’ perspective given set to be a FA over the winter … is getting paid for 2024 … and as a minor leaguer in EP only has a month or so of games. I guess Padres could just have him sitting around after … in case?

Quote from Stergios on August 26, 2024, 9:24 pmI’m somewhat surprised that Col just released him. A solid defensive catcher who is hitting .270 must have some value, no?

He has drastic splits away from COLs home field, and his power has dropped this season.

Quote from fenn68 on August 27, 2024, 2:02 amGetting the sense Padres added him purely as insurance against injury to Higashioka or Campusano. Having a veteran in the wings over Sullivan makes some sense.
Away from COORS, Dias is about the same offensively as the incumbents but is a better defensive catcher than Campy. I guess the thinking is in an emergency he is much better than calling up Sullivan.
COLO probably released him … FA after the season and not getting a QO … to allow for their top catching prospect to move up to the ML. If some team had claimed him off waivers … would have saved some moeey , too.
Sounds as though Diaz … given that he was getting paid the same no matter where he signed wanted the best chance to make a playoff roster and, apparently, the Padres were the only playoff contender willing to sign him (or at least the most appealing if there were others).
So, simply an insurance upgrade over Sullivan in the Padres’ minds.
