2024 Padres Season
Quote from ultratvfan on August 23, 2024, 2:00 pmQuote from fenn68 on August 23, 2024, 12:24 pmDarvish activated from restricted list and returned to the 15 day IL (where he was before) … Batten DFA to make room on the 40 man.
No idea if he gets time now that he is back for a minor league rehab before he is added to the 26 man. Not out of the question that he starts next Tuesday … this is Darvish so potentially not a conventional return.
I hope being returned to the 15-day IL is just a formality and will be reactivated this weekend and pitch on Monday. Having him back will be huge.

They should wait to activate him on the day they plan to start him ... preserves an extra RP until then. Monday?

Quote from Randy Manese on August 24, 2024, 12:38 amNot the same impact, but don't overlook the potential contributions of Wandy Peralta - a pitcher with experience in the post season. He was dominant at the start of the season, but started having issues in mid-June before being shut down in mid-July. If he is back to full strength and shows in his rehab that he can keep the ball in the yard, he could lessen the workload of higher leverage lefties like Morejon and Scott, keeping them fresh for the playoffs.
Having that 13th pitcher on the staff beginning 1 Sept is going to be huge for the Padres, as they work Darvish back into the SP mix. If Darvish can come back as smoothly as Musgrove has, Padres are going to be very tough down the stretch and into the playoffs even on the days that their offense is not hitting on all cylinders. With every passing day, I like our chances more and more. Go Padres!

Quote from fenn68 on August 24, 2024, 3:44 amWith 32 games to go for the Padres setting up for a tense stretch run with all the Playoff contenders playing well keeping the top 7 teams in play for Playoff positions / with one not making the Playoffs.
Last 10 games Padres are 6-4 … a .600 winning percentage if over the full season would yield the best record in MLB. Yet, in those last 10 games LAD, AZ, MILW, and ATL have gone 7-3 while the NYM have also gone 6-4. The “worst” of the contenders is PHIL at 5-5. No team is fading which makes for a great finish to the season (yet, frustrating for every team winning but not pulling away from the pack).
Making the Playoffs is the #1 priority and at this point the NYM are the team out … a couple games behind ATL.. Padres have a 5 game lead over the METS in the loss column … with 32 games to play that is a “good” *but not a lock if the Padres slump … going to be hard for NYM/ATL (both) get hot enough to catch the Padres even if the Padres continue at a 6-4 pace.
Side: with all their injuries the LAD have the best record IN MLB. Frustrating when the Padres are having one of their best seasons.
Playoffs are in the Padres’ hands.

Quote from fenn68 on August 24, 2024, 5:09 amThe Padres’ roster for the SEP run is setting up to be their best so far this season as all the injured are returning and the bench pieces have been primed by filling in and playing a lot.
Consider the pitching:
SP: Musgrove; Darvish; Cease; King; Perez (L). That should be one of the best 5 man rotations in MLB … Perez in his 23 innings has a fine 0.96 WHIP and for the #5 SP that is very good.
RHRP: Suarez (closer); Adam; Hoeing; Estrada; Reynolds are all producing extremely well with somewhat under the radar quality from Hoeing and Adam.
LHRP: Scott; Matsui; Morejon; and Peralta (the 14th pitcher after Sep 1). Note that post All-Star Matsui has he most innings from a RP (14.2) and a minuscule WHIP (0.68) … 0 BB / 18K. Maybe not in high leverage but has shown he has got it together from a rough early season transition to the ML.
SP/RP is balanced, deep, with quality and that should prevent any long losing streak getting the Padres in the Playoffs.

The offense post All-Star has been strong … expect Tatis and Kim back for SEP. Kim’s defense is important but after a slow start to the season post All-Star he was hitting .263 with an OBP of .344 in 80 AB … Padres will take that over McCoy and Wade. Tatis return puts both Solano and Peralta (L) as bench options … both have be hitting and will give Shildt a lot of flexibility for rests, injuries, situational moves.
At least on paper … it seems to be all coming together for the Padres for both a Playoff berth and a strong run in the Playoffs.

Quote from fenn68 on August 24, 2024, 7:50 amIf the METS are effectively eliminated by early SEP … Padres can really use that month to set-up for the playoffs. Padres have 5 off days in SEP and the longest run of games is 6 (twice and one ending the season on the road with LAD and AZ).
Might see them trying to save some starting arms … maybe pulling someone early or using a strategic 6th SP. Might see some more extensive use of the RP who are not considered high leverage options … giving them some extra work while saving some bullets in the key RP.
Same with the veteran offense options … some time off for Profar, Machado, Bogaerts, and Croney while allowing Solano and Peralta to keep sharp. Maybe some time off for Arraez to help his thumb heal.
Will be interesting to see how Shildt and Preller approach setting up for the playoffs.
