2024 Padres Season
Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2024, 8:19 amSetting up to a critical final 6 games of the season:
SD: v LAD (3 games Away) … v AZ (3 games Away)
AZ: v SF (3 games Home) … v SD (3 games Home)
LA: v.SD (3 games Home) … v. COLO (3 games Away)
SF: v AZ (3 games Away) … v STL (3 games Home)
Would be good to have a cushion going into that last week. LAD, AZ, SD, and even SF may all be jockeying for a playoff spot … along with ATL and the NYM.
Padres with 6 on the road vs LAD and AZ is going to be tough.

Each time we get behind I hold confidence we can still win but also wonder when this streak of comebacks will end.
Can we keep it up for two more months?
Let's hope so! I'm not sure all the late inning comebacks are sustainable or not, but the good guys keep on doing it, so why not! Go Pads!

Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 21, 2024, 9:06 amThe Dodgers and DBacks start a 4 game series on the 30th. Our last 6 games of the year are split against them. As long as we keep playing well things will get real interesting.

Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2024, 10:11 amPadres signed Profar for $1MM plus incentives that he will achieve and end up earning to total of $2.5MM … some did not think he was worth that. Merrill, a 20 year old SS with only a partial AA season, made the opening day line-up as the CF … not may thought that was a good ideal. Getting paid league minimum, $740,000.
On August 21:
Profar has the #1 WAR for LF in the NL and is tied for #7 in BA for all positions in the NL.
Merrill has the #1 WAR for CF in the NL and sits #9 in BA for all positions in the NL.
Great player evaluations or luck, you can debate, but incredible production for extreme bargain prices.
Have to give some credit to Preller, Shildt, and hitting coach Rodriguez for recognizing the talents and putting them in positions to succeed. Not sure where the Padres would be without both the clutch contributions.
Merrill is controlled for 5 more seasons (will be a real bargain for that period) … Profar is a FA after the season and pretty sure both sides will want him back in SD but this contract negotiation should be much more difficult that we thought at the start of the season given his production and overall value to the team (plus no replacement in house is a factor).

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 21, 2024, 10:44 amdodgers still have two series left with the Rox.
Also, while I really want to win the Division and knock them off the top I'm not so sure it benefits us that much. The down time hasn't done many division winners any favors. It may be better off not to lose the momentum going into the Postseason.

Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2024, 1:11 pmReport is that the Padres are about to add SS Mason McCoy from El Paso (option Batten back down) … will need a corresponding 40 man roster move.
McCoy is a legit SS defensively … RHH but not a very good hitter.
Maybe this goes with the report that Bogaert does not want to return to SS mid-season and potentially get his defense messed up. On a more negative thought … maybe the Padres see a longer IL stint for Kim and want to ensure defense at SS and concede some offense to get it.

The Dodgers play one of the series in Colorado. Let's hope that works to the Padres advantage. Also, the Dbacks have 1 series left with the Rockies.
Then, The Dodgers and Dbacks play a 4-game series against each other at the end of August. That should be an advantage to the Padres assuming they win their games.

You just keep starting the series threads, Ultra!

Quote from fenn68 on August 23, 2024, 12:24 pmDarvish activated from restricted list and returned to the 15 day IL (where he was before) … Batten DFA to make room on the 40 man.
No idea if he gets time now that he is back for a minor league rehab before he is added to the 26 man. Not out of the question that he starts next Tuesday … this is Darvish so potentially not a conventional return.
