Yu Darvish to the restricted list.

Personal issue…….not physical.

Hope all is well with him and his family.

May be about his brother who has Cancer.

Heading towards the Trade Deadline and "needs" are getting clearer.

Given where the Padres sit and the lack of depth in trade chips ... might not be "exciting" big names added (f anyone).

Might not even consider a position player since in the past 30 days the Padres are #2 in the NL in OPS and #1 in HR with Tatis missing time ... he should be back for the stretch run.

Pitching is the concern. Padres are not telling but they probably have a good read on the expectations around Musgrove and Darvish for the SP needs. In the past 30 days King - Waldron - Vasquez (surprised) are doing well ... Cease is hot and cold but going to stay In the rotation ... it is the 5th slot currently with Mazur that is on the bubble. Hopefully the see Darvish and/or Musgrove effective by Aug/Sep to fill out the five and maybe strengthen the top.

Relief may be the top target. in the past 30 days going well are Kolek (another surprise)-Morejon-Matsui-Davis (limited innings) ... Suarez has had some struggles (over use?) ... fading a bit Estrada - De Los Santos - and Peralta. Looks like chips may be aimed at a late inning arm and maybe a swing man for spot starts / long relief.

See nothing in the minors that I can reasonably expect to rely on.

My priority right now is an arm for the ‘pen.  I just cannot trust Wandy, Matsui or EDLS in a close game (or even with a large lead!).  I like what I’ve been seeing from Kolek.  Estrada can’t be relied upon to shut the door consistently imho; he just doesn’t have the track record to inspire that confidence.

OTOH, Wandy, EDLS have a track record which is better than this year’s results.

I hope everything works out for him and his family. There are things in life that are a lot more important than baseball. Acee says there's a chance he doesn't return this season. I take that to mean it must be something pretty serious.

De Los Santos reminds me of Garcia last season…throws hard but flat and MLB hitters don’t miss a middle middle fastball…gotta have some run or movement of some sort. Throwing a four seamer is a spot pitch…low on either corner or up on either corner…I always taught my pitchers that a spot fastball down or up in their eyes are “out” pitches and a good two seamer that runs in or out is a “bat” breaker.

Wandy is a nibbler and if he gets squeezed at all then he starts to get too much of the plate.

Bottom line is that pitching at the MLB level is so very hard and missing your spot is very easy to do and the end result isn’t good. MLB hitters know the secret to hitting a curve ball from anyone and that is “Don’t miss the Fastball”

The game today is on Roku TV…if you have a smart TV it’s free and if you don’t you can make an account and I think that’s free also

Go Padres!!!

Tatis, Profar, Merrill, Arraez and Suarez all named All-Stars. Another 8 with Padres ties in Turner, Strahm, Abrams, Soto, Clase, Lugo, Yates and Naylor.

Man, I was close! Only Waldron didn't make it from my list.

What a great reward for Merrill! Like someone posted the other day, had Grisham still been here, Jackson may not even be in the show.

And Profar??? C'mon, dudes numbers are fairly similar to Soto's- for $25 million less!

Good team we have, just have to find consistency in all phases.

Should be a good second half.

Go Pads!

With Texas struggling and hopefully a seller , would anyone else be up for a Yates reunion ? Our old friend is dominating again . 1 year 4.5 mil with less than half due, would he be the best pickup we could make ?

Would be good but should be in great demand from other clubs … not sure who the Padres could (would) offer up as an out bid of the others.

Side note: while Darvish is on the restricted list ... he does not get a paid. So, from a "cash" perspective the Padres will have a few extra dollars for trade deadline adds.

Not sure how (or if) they make an adjustment for AAV luxury tax purposes.

If Darvish is out a longer period ... and AAV is adjusted ... Padres would be able to take on more 2024 salary for one or more adds at the deadline. Could impact who they add ... or maybe require lesser prospects if a larger salary is taken on.
