2024 Padres Season
Quote from Jeremy Hill on May 17, 2024, 10:37 pmQuote from 3fingersplit on May 17, 2024, 8:05 pmI have been reading all these comments as I recover from another cancer surgery and I haven’t had the strength to actually post anything but I have to say this…all of you guys that are predicting gloom and doom and how this team sucks or this player isn’t doing his job…we have professional baseball in San Diego so pump the brakes on all the negativity…it’s freaking ridiculous and it’s baseball and I love it.
I don’t know if I’ll see another opening day but this has been my team since 1969 and I’ll ride with my Padres…good, bad, thin or flush and by the way…those of you that have been bagging on Waldron….you can stick it in your ear…he was awesome tonight…10k’s in 5.2 innings…give it a rest already
I gotta go lay down for a bit
go Padres!!!
Fuck cancer. Kick it's ass 3finger. I understand the frustration and concern with the team and some of the players, but I agree that we could all probably make more effort to not get bogged down in negativity. It's times like these I miss our old buddy Henry. I'll be pulling for you and as always Go Padres!!!

Quote from fenn68 on May 18, 2024, 10:52 am47 games in … getting close to the 1/3 pole and somewhat beyond the “small sample size” caution.
Padres are one game under .500 but still are sitting in the last playoff slot … so positioned well considering the troubles of Machado, Bogaerts, Kim so far and should expect them to be more productive as the season progresses.
Took a look from a team perspective and how the components ranked among the other NL team … and compared to others Padres’ roster is playing at a legit playoff level. Consider:
OFFENSE: BA (.255 … #4); OBP (.323 … #5) … SLG (.375 … #5) …. SLG surprised me but with only 6 playoff teams have to consider SD doing its job … maybe inconsistent but there without the help of the key “stars”.
RELIEF PITCHING: ERA (3.94 … #7); WHIP (1.22 … 2nd); BAA (.236 … # 4)
STARTING PITCHING: ERA (4.13 … #8); WHIP (1.22 … 5th); BAA (.233 … #4)
So, except for ERA … Padres are pretty consistently among the to 1/3 of the NL and that is pretty consistent with being in the last (#6) playoff slot.
I guess there is an explanation of the poorer ERA vs the quality WHIP/BBA … maybe when the pitchers have a bad inning it is really bad vs quality good innings. Will that turn in the Padres favor later?
So if the “lagging” stars heat up (as logically they should / must) and the pitching retains their strengths but start avoiding the melt down innings …. Padres do have the basis of a strong playoff team and, in my mind, a good chance of at a minimum secure the #5 playoff slot. Will be a long shot to beat out LAD for the West or one of PHIL/ATL for the fourth slot … but would not rule that out yet.

You are absolutely right, I mean I have been in this boat since 1999 as a 14 yr old, sometimes I complain about the wait, but, I forget that there is people that have done it for 30 more years than me.
About your current situation, I very much appreciate that you took the time to post, hang in there buddy!

I've seen this narrative pop up in press and other fan comments, and it still makes me wanna say "yeah, but..."
I think he's more of a recent steal than a surprise. The dude has always had fantastic stuff. There was more than one writer last year (Eno Sarris, being one of them, I believe) who was touting him as the sleeper of all closers last year. The Cubs never really game him a consistent crack in their bullpen, though, and control has always been an issue. All he's done for us is shove in ST and AAA (and now with the big league club). I'm quite stoked we managed to claim him.

Quote from fenn68 on May 21, 2024, 3:17 pmPadres are sitting with the last Wild Card slot … their record vs those teams ahead of them:
0-3 … PHIL
5-3 … LAD
2-1 … MILW
3-1 … ATL
4-2 … CHC
So an excellent 14-10 vs the teams ahead of them and winning records against every team except PHIL (best record in the NL).
Except for COLO … the Padres are 9-10 vs the remaining opponents. 2-5 vs COLO.
So only the poor showings so far are against PHI and COLO with a combined 2-8 … leaving them 23-17 vs the rest of the league. That should be a pretty good sign going forward.

Quote from sportwarrior on May 22, 2024, 2:05 pmFractured shoulder for Boegy. Just when he seemed to maybe be turning things around at the plate. He'd been working so hard, too. I feel just awful for him, even if we might see a marginal upgrade offensively by playing Solano/Peralta/Whoever full time (because, you know, Xander was just that bad).

Quote from WindsorUK on May 22, 2024, 3:25 pmFeel bad for Bogaerts as well but whoever replaces certainly doesn't have a high bar to reach.
Xander has been, well, awful. Any number of players( Solano. Peralta, Eguy, Batten) can achieve at least what he'd given us, if not more.
Anyone know the return time on a fractured shoulder? I've had both of mine replaced so I know it won't be a quick fix.
