According to Chris Kemp, the Pads selected 3 of their top 35 rated prospects in Mayfield, Boston & Fountain.  The drafting of so many seniors that are expected to be under slot signees, the extra money will go to Boston & Fountain.  Looks like another solid draft overall.  Chris Kemp is the biggest asset on Preller's staff.  Can't wait to see who Kemp and company target next January for the international signing period.  Go Pads!

Roki Sasaki or bust!

Hasn’t Sasaki had some health issues over the past year where his team has deactivated him … arm,, fatigue. No idea how that will impact the teams that want to go “all in” on him and using all of their international pool money.

If there is any concern there … are there other international prospects that could be similarity high ceiling alternatives (like DeVries and Salas were)?

Since Sasaki will be subject to international pool limits … the contract offers will be “similar” and money may not be the deciding factor. The keys may be the immediate opportunity to start, playing for a contender, and some say a lower profile market (a quiet guy apparently). So, maybe the key is the Padres making the playoffs in 2024.

We need Nomo,Darvish and Matsui to do their thing!

Is there still such a thing as tampering to get a player to come to your team?  If not, definitely think Padres have an edge with Darvish because of his apparent friendship with Sasaki.  Sasaki has had an undisclosed arm injury this year that has resulted in him missing a few starts and generally seeing his stats tick down a bit - not that they are poor!  His FB and splitter are exceptional and with a healthy arm at only 23 of age (birthdate 11/03/01) he is potentially the next leader of the staff.

However, I was wrong about OF Jung Hoo Lee signing with us but only because the Padres couldn't meet  his salary demands because they had so many holes to fill on the roster with a much reduced budget.  Situation turned out okay for Padres as they evolved into an All-Star OF and Lee ended up with a season ending injury early in the year.  With money apparently not the issue, I would like to pencil Sasaki in the 2025 rotation along with Darvish, Musgrove, Cease and King with Waldron as the #6 guy/long man in the pen. Hopefully we will have some of our minor league arms ready by the middle of 2025 to cover any injury issues or needed trades - I see quite a few with major league potential.  Similarly, we have an excellent number of high octane RP arms that are making their way up the system.  This was the year to worry about the pitching staff and so far we have dealt with injuries and inconsistent performance to still be in the playoff hunt.  Niebla is amazing! Go Padres!

Concerning the 2024 draft, looks like we were very strategic to try to land some of the tougher college commits, especially those to LSU.  Hopefully, we can pull them off as Kemp seems confident he has the money and made the necessary ties with the families of those players drafted.  Some very large persons drafted, which deviates so much from the previous middle infield types - like the fact they are trying to infuse a little power into the system.

Given the rules … Sasaki will sign with some team for $6MM+/- bonus but then will be controlled for 6 years (first three a league minimum) … even if “concerned” about health it still is a good risk to sign him. Ball is really in his court in making the team choice.

If the Padres sign him … maybe a 2025 twist IF the Padres want to remain under the CBT threshold. He comes in at league minimum … Padres may want to resign Profar, Kim, and will take a big ARB hit on Arraez … so, would they consider trading Cease (last control year and likely in ARB $12-14MM range) to add some other roster depth. That keeps Waldron in the starting rotation. Of course a bit hinges on the projected availability of Musgrove and Darvish in 2025.

So, reported, the Padres have signed 6 (4C, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) and collectively ended up “under” slot by $1,541,000. Pretty good pool to close the deals on the HS types … Fountain (5th round), Mayfield (1st), and Bateman (2nd).

Not sure in any of the other in the first 10 rounds will command an over slot payment (never know) and sure did not see much after the 10th round that would command a premium payment.

Can’t really fully buy into this logic but having to go over slot on the HS kind could suggest the Padres got a better prospect considering the pick position … at least I hope that.

Seems as though the Padres opted to target a shorter list of “better prospects” and just went to College SR with little negotiation room to fill out the draft and create that under slot pool. We will see how that works out.

The only guy I would be worried about not getting signed is Chase Fralick. It sounds like he's a pretty strong Auburn commit. They must think they have a shot, but Kemp admitted it could be tough to get him to sign.

Fountain signed for 1.7m

That should still leave them with some under slot money depending on what the #1 and #2 get.

Fountain may be the hold-up in announcing other signings … since he was the big over slot signing. With August 1 being the end date … should start hearing on the rest soon.

Tears signed too, but I haven't seen the amount listed anywhere yet.
