2024 Draft

PreviousPage 5 of 7Next

It appears that #2 Bateman signed for $2.5MM ($750K OVER slot) and #4C Neighbors signed for $600K (about on slot).

By my loose calculations from what I think has happen so far … they need some more under slot money from #1 Mayfield, #3 Hightower, and #4 Tears if they stick to their allocation.

However they can go OVER the allocation by as much as 5% (about $450K) and “only” pay a 75% penalty on the overage. Anything more gets into losing draft picks.

Padres usually have this figured out … so don’t expect a problem.

#1 Mayfield signs ON SLOT.

Hightower has signed, but I haven't seen the bonus amount yet.  I like that he is a coach's son.  Go Pads!

Tears signed too, but I haven't seen the amount listed anywhere yet.

According to Jim Kallis, Tears signed for full slot value, $525, 200.

Just for my amusement … the Padres signings are net $450K OVER their slot money.

Hightower is still TBD with a slot value of $852K. Hard to judge him … not in the top 250 in MLB.com yet Padres took him at #88 (3rd round) … on the surface should be under slot but never know what is behind the scenes.

However, even if Hightower is on slot … Padres have the 5% wiggle room over the total allocation which is about (you guessed it) … $450K.

The Padres will not have anywhere enough savings to even try to sign Chase Fralick, the Catcher who is the Auburn commit who they selected in the 20th round... Oh well.  Nice dream.

I think Pads had a nice strategy, but I don't think the Pads thought it would cost so much to sign Bateman and Fountain.  With both signings, that ate 2M of their salary savings from all of the College Seniors they drafted in the first 10 rounds to get the savings to sign both of those players.

Hopefully, not signing Fralick doesn't haunt the Pads like when they drafted Chase Burns and Gage Jump about three years ago, with no more cash to even try to sign them.

Pretty sure they did their due diligence on the cost of Bateman and Fountain and had a ballpark figure on each … then drafted afterwards accordingly.

Since Fralick lasted to the 20th round (passed by everyone) … probably was just a shot in the dark if the unexpected happened somewhere within the top 10 rounds.

Apparently Hightower signed for SLOT. Last of the picks in the top 10 rounds subject to the pool allocation.

If I have the calculations correct … Padres went about $450K OVER the allocation which comes with a 75% penalty on the overages … so an additional $338K. Not likely they go further over (more annoying penalties) to sign any of the round 11-20 picks for more than the allocated $150K.

They worked that out with precision … as they usually do.

Does anyone have a “good” scouting report on Cobb Hightower?

3rd round pick signed at full slot (about $850K) yet have seen minimal commentary about him plus was not listed on the MLB.com top draft prospect list. Just curious.

This is the most informative article I've seen about him.

MLB: East grad Hightower a third-round pick
