2024-25 Offseason Talk
Quote from dusty on January 2, 2025, 7:55 pmMy two cents/feelings:
I’m 50/50 on Cease being traded. Part of me thinks he will have a chip on his shoulder for playoffs. Part of me thinks he cant pitch in the big game and we should deal him for other long term resources. I also question that trading him at the deadline would get a better return somehow.
In the end I have a weird feeling that the Padres get Sasaki, Cease and Suarez are dealt and potentially Cronenworth too and Padres pick an MLB ready starter, OF two other prospects as well as frees up 34 mil to bring back Scott, Profar, and possibly sign Hoffman as well. Personally, I think Profar isnt more than good energy and a fan favorite at this point. His post season at the plate was horrible especially the dodgers series.
I don’t really think Cronenworth is a bad contract anymore but unless you are ok with him at first for the foreseeable future, he will probably fetch a really good return. His end of the season numbers and especially the postseason was another horrible sight to see.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on January 3, 2025, 6:22 amWe reportedly have an offer out to Hyeseong Kim who has to make a decision by this afternoon. If we land him it probably increases the likelihood of Cronenworth or Arraez being dealt. Like Randy said AJ has been known to make a flurry of moves in a short time frame. I'm sure he's working on a bunch of permutations. He may just need the first domino to fall to take him down a certain path.

Apparently a number of teams are "interested" in Kim but little reporting on his price tag. MLBTradeRumors had him at 3 years / $24MM ($8MM AAV). That seems a bit steep for the Padres given their presumed payroll situation unless Preller has a series of trades pending.
I guess I am not as enamored with Kim ... singles hitting, left handed hitting 2B who would have to translate his skills from KBO to MLB ... does not seem worth a big contract commitment if it forces out some established MLB players. If a team is desperate for a 2B that may be different (see SEA).
Did see the note that if Kim does not sign and returns to Korea ... he can come out again next year and not be encumbered with a posting fee with essentially be a total FA with no time limit to negotiate. Still will be only 27. Sure sounds as a justifiable strategy by Kim.

Lots of people came up to me when I was wearing my Darvish jersey around Japan last October.

According to MLBTR, he is signing for $12.5M per season, with 2 team option years at $9.5M.

Actually it is over the full 3 years ($2.8MM-$4.1MM-$4.1MM) plus money if he is released getting it to the $12.5MM. The option years are each at $5MM.
Does sound as though he turned down a higher guarantee from the LAA ... and offers from other teams. Seems he wanted to be a Dodger even if he is relegated to a part time role.

They DFAed Diego Cartaya in response. I would imagine the LAD 40 man is getting really tight.
