2023 Season

So I just heard Severino left Padres and signed with Mets.. Great fkng Move .. Jesus!

Iglesias just hit for the cycle

.305.351.433.783 iglesias with RISP.. in over 878 ABs in his career

In case you are wondering what his career numbers with RISP are ...

If Manny goes on IR, I wouldn't mind giving both Iglesias and Rivas a chance.

Cut Engel and Odor, give Rivas starts at 1B, shift Jake back to 2B and let Kim and Iglesias battle for 3B for the few weeks Manny is down.

Gotta try something!

Not a fan of Odor BUT in the last 7 / 15 days he has been one of the better hitters on the team … yes, low bar but it is not as though any call up is a clear upgrade.

Odor’s OPS for the last 7 days is .875 (14 AB) and 15 days is .714 (21 AB) … small sample size but at least it is positive … also a low K rate. This makes him over the past 7/15 days one of the most productive Padre hitters.

Eaton on the other hand did not hit in his AAA rehab and has not hit with the Padres plus his defense has significantly deteriorated. He should be released opening a 40 man roster slot.

However, if they cut Eaton who is the back-up OF (CF) unless, if needed, Tatis moves to CF and Odor / Carpenter cover a corner OF slot? Not ideal. The “idea” of Dahl is fine but did not do well at the start of the season and is not hitting all that well on his rehab. At this point do they wait until Azocar comes off the IL to cut Eaton?

I will go off the rails a bit more … maybe the Padres should start Eaton in CF more over Grisham in the short run. Maybe see a bigger sample size with Eaton since Grisham is in the midst of a run where he is as bad offensively as we have seen. Consider the OPS for Grisham over the past 7 / 15 days are .225/.389 … that is OPS! Add that his K rate is astronomical … 7 days with 12K/21AB, 15 days with 18K/40AB.

Even more off the rails … move Tatis to CF permanently (he has looked good enough in the OF) and work on adding a corner OF who can provide some offense … should be easier to get an offensive upgrade over Grisham given the lower defensive demand. Additionally, Padres have no legit CF prospect coming up for a few years (Zavala) and at the point can’t continue with Grisham who has proven to be an offensive liability in 2023 - 2022 - end of 2021.

No good choices but changes are called for.

At some point have to be critical of Cruz as the RHH DH. Other than a couple of games early in the season he has been an offensive liability … high K rate. No other value than DH and if he can no longer hit … well move on.

In his case, maybe not a DH type replacement but a more versatile bat that could allow starters rotate through the DH role … probably a RHH although not a lot of options except Iglesias who could provide INF back-up allowing Machado - Bogaerts - Kim get DH time.

At 33 Iglesias’ defense has dipped but his OPS in 2021 (.701) and 2022 (.708) driven by a good BA/OBP should be an overall offensive upgrade on this roster.

On the positive side ... Padres have the best fielding % and lowest number of errors in MLB along with the 6th best DRS. So that is helping the pitching and the team (in the field) are not giving games away.

Since the pitching is basically still "middle of the pack" in MLB with the plus defense ... Padres may be avoiding even a worse set of outcomes given the poor offense.

All that is great, but a loss is still a loss, no matter how pretty or ugly.

We need wins!

Haven't seen it posted yet, but Severino opted out.

At this point it seems like this team is going to go as far as the big 4 take us. Carpenter's resurrection last year is looking like a mirage. Getting his eyes fixed didn't save Cruz from father time. Nola fell off a cliff. Grisham is lost at the plate again. The internal options to replace them are pretty uninspiring. Trades at this point in the season are pretty uncommon. Kim has looked good lately and maybe we can expect a little more out of Cronenworth. It's the stars that are going to need to carry the load though. Bogaerts has been mostly good. Soto has been good lately. Tatis has been good, but not quite the offensive force he was pre-suspension. Manny has been the biggest disappointment. Hopefully his hand is alright and he can get back to being Manny effing Machado again. The team seems to go as he goes more than anyone else. We need the big boys to earn those big checks.
