Don't have to announce corresponding move.. aka Severino/Yorman or even recently released Torrens to 40 (or even a mid may trade) until you choose the path..BUT come on bro.. Campy to 60 is a no brainer..
I believe they can only add a player to the 60 day IL if they need that 40 man roster slot for a non-roster add to the 40 man. Can’t make the move just to have an open 40 man slot for the future.
So it's safe to assume that add will be a C.. cant go with just Sully and Nola on the 40..right?
Wonder if Bo Naylor is available?
Otherwise Compete with LAA for Torrens or (my preference) add Severino to 40 if not 26
The add should be a catcher BUT having a tough time identifying anyone I believe in to handle a major role on a playoff team. However, since Sullivan has become that player I feared he was and is hitting like Nola … may just need to make a move for change sake … but need a body that can hit some without being butcher defensively. Given the need for catchers across MLB … anyone out there now as a FA (or relegated veteran in the minors) is very unlikely to be the answer. Almost has to be a trade move to get any noticeable upgrade and that is not easy to pull off in May.
Given the Padres don’t have a lot of trade chips for major upgrades … I guess some strategic call has to be made in putting this trade chips in play for a catcher vs. a DH upgrade (Cruz / Carpenter are really struggling in a position that is only there for hitting) or OF (Grisham is the Nola of the OF … does not have to be a CF if you move Tatis to CF). Better chance to get a bigger offensive upgrade at DH/OF that any catcher out there. A bit of a bet that Campusano will return in Aug/Sep and become the catcher upgrade.
Guessing (other than some minor tinkering) the bigger move (if any are needed) will be in July after the Padres evaluate what gets better and what gets worse in the next two months.
Adding a catcher would be useless at this point. This team has more than enough talent to win, they just aren't doing it. We got to the playoffs last year with basically Manny alone. Since then the Padres added "the best hitter in baseball" in Juan Soto. We traded for "the best reliever in baseball". We signed another star hitter in Xander Bogaerts this year. We got our superstar Fernando Tatis back. Does any team in MLB have more hitting talent than our Padres do? NO. We have traded every single bit of quality we had in the minors and it hasn't helped at all. Another Catcher? Who TF cares? This team needs a serious attitude adjustment, not more talent. When the Royals are beating up on a team full of superstars, talent isn't the problem.
I think the Padres should drop Manny down to #6-#8 in the lineup until he stops complaining and starts hitting. I would send him down to the minors for a stretch if I could. Put Grisham on the bench and replace him full-time with Azocar and Engel. It can't be much worse. Does Nola have options? We must have SOME catcher in the minors with a cannon arm and at least average defense who can't hit to save his life. Nola can't hit to save his life AND he can't play defense or throw out a little leaguer.
Our team's payroll is maxed out. We have amassed huge talent and it needs to perform. If we bring in a star Catcher, is he going to make the Padres better or are the Padres going to make him worse? More talent won't help. This team needs a CULTURE CHANGE.

Jake has like a 1.357 OPS (small sample alert) at 2B and .567 at 1B.
For those who believe defensive position and spot in the order make a big difference…at what point do we move Jake back to 2B and play Carp at 1B everyday or find another 1B?
Everyone wants a new Catcher…. No one has mentioned that 1B is worse.
Keeping in mind moving Jake would mean Kim is without a position.
We need offense from somewhere…….
If you makes you feel better, its only this year that is that far apart. 2022 and 2022 he was better at 1B, and in 2021 it was really close. So there is hope IMO the 1B position as far as it working.
I think its more the line up positions. Career wise, 7th batting spot is his best.
I’m not so much worried about Jake than I am curious why no one has mentioned the black hole offensively at 1B.
It’s been worse then Catcher and is supposed to be an offense first position.
We should be getting 50-75% “more” offense from 1B….not even 1% less…yet no mention of any change at the position while everyone’s had a suggestion about what to do about Catcher.

I am not worried about Crone or "offense by position". The Padres chose which positions to spend money on. Crone is being paid $11.4 million per year, which translates to roughly 1.4 WAR. He is on pace to deliver about 1.2 WAR. He is hitting roughly his paycheck value. Machado is on pace for a 1.0 WAR ON THE SEASON. Despite GG quality defense! He is giving about $8 million in value despite costing $32 million.
If Jake just hits his worth, I am happy. Manny giving us 1/4 the value he is being paid is a problem. They both currently stand at #20 in MLB at their respective positions.

Quote from TarheelPadre on May 16, 2023, 10:01 pmThis team needs an enema.
Aj knows how to spend money, but it’s more important to know HOW to spend money.
Melvin frustrates me and probably needs to go sooner rather than later.
I’m sorry but as much as I can appreciate a Gold Glove CF like Grisham, there is no way he deserves to be in the lineup hitting below .200 AGAIN this season.
Why is Odor still getting playing time?
I know we have some talent hiding somewhere in Timbuktu A ball, though it’s not like this organization has ever developed anyone. Hey, maybe look at what the Rays do to develop players and try to hire some of those people. I don’t know, just a thought!
We are dead last in all of MLB in batting average with the 3rd highest payroll. Let that sink in…. We are awful at the plate. This team made huge investments to address the offense and its time the players stop counting all their guaranteed money and start showing what got them the big money in the first place.
Now that I got that off my chest, LFGSD!

Quote from Henry Silvestre on May 17, 2023, 5:48 amOn May 16th 2022.. we beat the Braves 7-3 with thus lineup (BA at that time )
Jake .205
Kim .223
Hosmer .350
Voit .175
Profar .185
Myers ..237
Cano .174
Nola. 215
Grish .152
Manny sat out but was hitting .359.. Alfaro PH RBI was at .267.. Alcantara PR that day
But these boys were clutch as hell in the early going..
Biggest take away.. Jake/Kim are about the same as they were at this time. GRISH is >... BUT Manny is more than 100 pts off. NOLA is 70 points off..and our backup C would be our #1 or #2 hitter BA wise at this time..
Bench was way more flexible. And had Speed Azocar and Alcantara. Alfaro and Cano (sort of our Odor)

Can't hit( never could), and turns out, he's a crap fielder AND baserunner!
To paraphrase Dean Wermer, " Horrible hitter, fielder, and runner is no way to go through life, son"

Azocar is beginning his rehab in AZ … then probably in EP for a few days … when ready he should bump Engel … RHH / CF. Maybe 2 weeks?
Dahl should be about ready to come off rehab soon … but a LHH (if they care) and might bump Odor (also a good idea).
I guess if they are really frustrated with Engel (R) /Odor (L) … DFA both for two roster slots and add Dahl (L) and pick up non-roster INF Lopes (R) … let Azocar have more rehab time. Really don’t see anyone else compelling in EP who can cover CF or middle INF.
With that “extra” roster slot maybe add Severino to see if he can boost the catching role and option Sullivan.
Maybe just the shake up of minor pieces gets the attention of the “stars”.

The dodgers hitting isn’t much better than ours. The difference obviously is “when” you get your hits.
I’ve been saying our offense is gonna snap out of this for two weeks now.
Starting to wonder….

6. Rivas 1B
7. Kim 3B
8. Severino C
