Machado is evolving into the pivotal storyline in 2023.
If there was one player over the winter that most had pegged as the stable cornerstone of a 2023 run it would be Machado after a 2022 that put him in MVP consideration and earned him a mega contract extension.
The others were riding on some level of hope … Tatis (can he return effectively after the injury/suspension) … Soto (can he recover from a lackluster end to 2022 with the Padres) … Bogaerts (can he adapt to a new league / team quickly).
However, of the four … Manny has been the least productive year to date … now the injury that COULD be a long outage (will know more Friday and the days after) and eliminate him rebounding until the second half of the season.
When you build a top heavy team and the cornerstone piece is not delivering bad outcomes occur.

While true,if Xander,Tatis,Soto and Crone just hit to their average it should be enough to make the playoffs.
Then,as we all know,anything can happen.
The problem lately it seems like only one guy has a good game at a time.
The other night it was Crone…earlier in the year it was Xander…when Tatis has a good game at the plate….no one else does.
We can’t seem to get 2-3 guys to have multiple hits a night….and no one’s hitting for xtra bases right now.
We get the occasional double with bases empty….that’s about it.
23 walks by the Royals in 3 games and only ONE scored…..at that was on a balk.
KC must have left SD laughing all the way home.

Agree that even without Machado the Padres have the talent to still make the playoffs … only 3 games out now and, effectively, they have been without offense from Manny all season. Actually the 10 “regulars” are all hitting under their career OPS number.
Still this can turn on a dime (see STL early vs n9w) and mysteriously everyone starts hitting … too much talent not to. Even the 7 games behind the LAD is surmountable given the problems they are now enduring with their pitching staff.

Another positive is our pitching has been good (best in MLB since May 1) and our defense is "historically" good (11 errors in 44 games).On pace for just 40 errors on the season.
Those are much harder to turn around.Hitting is contagious....as is slumping.
Much easier to assume the offense will hit their stride and perform.
The numbers on the back of their baseball cards will be pretty close to their norms by October.

Interestingly...or sadly.....Austin Nolas' OPS is currently almost identical to Juan Sotos Slug%.

I would ease Lugo back in (BP role) and ride with Weathers at least into the All Star break.. when Seth comes back.. maybe the rest of the way..if Weathers is still this version of himself

A good opportunity to facilitate the workload management of Lugo ... few expected him to start a full slate of games in 2023. He will miss at least 2 starts (maybe 3-4) and not just reducing innings but creating a multi-week rest for the arm to rebuild and that may allow him to push to a higher than expected innings total.
A lot depends on where they see Lugo down the stretch (SP or RP) going into the playoffs coupled with how Weathers pitches and how they plan to use Martinez down the stretch. Somehow mix and match all that and figure out the best load management plan ... while trying to win now and make-up ground on the league leaders.

Manny to the DL. I wouldn't mind seeing Eguy back when he's eligible.
