Why are we so bad at base stealing when everyone else is so good?

It’s not just the Catchers.

The Contreras situation should be a good reminder that there is a lot more that goes into a team's evaluation of a catcher than what we look at as fans. Knizner has a .473 OPS on the year, but his catcher's ERA is almost 1.5 runs lower than Contreras's. There have always been questions about Contreras's game calling and ability behind the plate. As frustrating as Nola can be, pitchers seem to love throwing to him.

Sully's starts have led to Snells and Lugos best starts of 2023.. just saying

.786 OPS 21 PA 2 doubles 1 HR

Nola 83 PA 2 doubles 1 HR... .494 OPS

I think Sully has earned at least a 50/50 split for now

Contreras's work as a catcher has to be a real issue if a team like STL after giving him 5 year /  $85MM deal will take him out of the catching role one month into the season in favor of Knizner and a pure rookie.

A number of teams were questioning his defense in the off season while he was a FA. At 30 and after working for David Ross (a quality catcher) with the Cubs ... he is what he is ... lacking the ability to call games well and work effectively with the pitchers.

The exact type of catcher Melvin does NOT want. In the future ... need to see what Campusano and Sullivan offer over a longer run defensively first then offensively. Nola has the role for enough time in 2023 to rebound a bit or convince the Padres to move in on 2024 (not likely mid season 2023).

I don't have Nola as a priority issue (want better but not a major priority) since the Padres have spent on a mega offense to carry his light bat. Tatis - Machado - Soto - Bogaerts - Cronenworth should be carrying the club offensively ... they are not yet ... and that is a problem for now.

I mean ??

Nola has fallen off the proverbial cliff.

He's hitting his way off the roster.

It took Manny an entire season (after signing with us)

.256 .334 .462 .796

MANNY'S #'S 1ST YEAR as a Padre

Soto 1st yr (full) is 2023 ..so far

220 .381 .398 .779

Not too far apart to be honest.. the SLG should go up as will the BA (2 weeks ago was .170) as Soto heats up..

Last night, saw a blog on the SD offense, and the author suggested a trade for Paul Goldschmidt. Of course this was contingent on STL staying out of the play off race this summer, which is not a given.

They hinted since Goldschmidt is a FA after the 2024 season, STL might have interest in trading him. They suggested a multi player deal, Goldschmidt and one of STL RPs, not sure that we need another bull pen guy, but good arms are always welcome in a playoff race.

Suggested was Goldschmidt and someone like Giovanny Gallegos or Genesis Cabrera. Goldschmidt is owed $26M for this season and 2024, so a big number, but Siedler does like star players that are quality people, and that is certainly Goldschmidt. The suggested return was built around Merrill, Kim, and Weathers.

I know Kim is a fan and clubhouse favorite, but the bat has seemed to regress a little at this point of the season. And we know that Crone can return to 2B very easily without much if any loss of defense at 2B. And you cant beat Goldy's bat! Even at 35 this season, the dude is raking, .312 BA, .399 OBP, .565 SLG with an OPS+ of 165, easily leading the SD team in every offensive category, and really stretching the 2023 line up.

Imagine facing a line up of Tatis, Machado, Soto, Goldschmidt, Bogaerts, and Crone in whatever order in a playoff game! Oh Doctor!!

Would you make that trade of Merrill, Kim, and Weathers for Goldschmidt and possibly a RP?

Even if StL is out of contention ... doubt they will trade Goldschmidt who would be a main part of their 2024 line-up ... and StL does not give up battling for the playoffs easily and more likely they will seek to improve for 2024 first with a longer control piece than the fading Kim. Plus with that mindset ... certainly not for that small return with little near term impact.

I know it is easy to believe Siedler has an open end checkbook for "stars" ... I don't believe that. His limit may be high ($300MM?) and given the failure of his spending so far as a good businessman might push against throwing more money into the current pit. The proposed deal would net a plus $20MM in 2024 payroll before dealing with the rumored "all in" plan to pursue Ohtani, exercising the options on Martinez / Wacha or pursuing multiple impact SP for them (and Snell).

Didn't we hear the same narrative on an unbeatable offense when the season started with Tatis - Machado - Soto - Bogaerts - Cronenworth? How has that worked out? If those five make a turn around don't need a Goldschmit if they do not turn around Goldschmit will not make the difference.

No issue with moving on from Kim ... but the current version (only controlled thru 2024) will not generate much of a return as a defensive only SS for $8MM. Padres (without getting a good return) are better off sticking with Kim at 2B (and having him as the back-up SS/3B if Bogaerts/Manchado get injured).

Would they do it for Soto, straight up?
