Last night, saw a blog on the SD offense, and the author suggested a trade for Paul Goldschmidt. Of course this was contingent on STL staying out of the play off race this summer, which is not a given.

They hinted since Goldschmidt is a FA after the 2024 season, STL might have interest in trading him. They suggested a multi player deal, Goldschmidt and one of STL RPs, not sure that we need another bull pen guy, but good arms are always welcome in a playoff race.

Suggested was Goldschmidt and someone like Giovanny Gallegos or Genesis Cabrera. Goldschmidt is owed $26M for this season and 2024, so a big number, but Siedler does like star players that are quality people, and that is certainly Goldschmidt. The suggested return was built around Merrill, Kim, and Weathers.

I know Kim is a fan and clubhouse favorite, but the bat has seemed to regress a little at this point of the season. And we know that Crone can return to 2B very easily without much if any loss of defense at 2B. And you cant beat Goldy's bat! Even at 35 this season, the dude is raking, .312 BA, .399 OBP, .565 SLG with an OPS+ of 165, easily leading the SD team in every offensive category, and really stretching the 2023 line up.

Imagine facing a line up of Tatis, Machado, Soto, Goldschmidt, Bogaerts, and Crone in whatever order in a playoff game! Oh Doctor!!

Would you make that trade of Merrill, Kim, and Weathers for Goldschmidt and possibly a RP?

Would they do it for Soto, straight up?

Probably not, since STL has a log jam of OFers at the moment, and their best on is in the MiLs.

It's so weird. What's meaningfully changed since they signed him for five years? He's still great at throwing out runners (seven percentage points above league average, ninth-best poptime in MLB) and still a below-average-but-not-awful framer who has some issues blocking pitches in the dirt.

I don't know if the pitchers are using the absence of Molina as an excuse for their struggles or if the front office is looking for a scapegoat or what, but Contreras is who he's generally been -- a strong-armed, bat-first catcher. If that's not what you wanted, then what were you doing signing him in the first place?

It's nonsensical. He's a good player and now has to deal with this magnified narrative surrounding him because the Cardinals have experienced far broader-reaching failures in the organization as a whole.

I would explore Contreras sooner than later.. he is also batting .375 with 2 outs and RISP in 2023 as well

At $18M a year through 2027, pass. He is simply not worth that money, let alone the prospects that we would have to give up to get him. The rest of the offense needs to be carrying the C position. And as I have mentioned in the past, with our SPs, Bench is not throwing anyone out at 2B. Contreras does little for this team to improve.

IF SD really wanted him, would have they could have outbid STL in the offseason. They didnt.

I have always been amazed at how difficult it is for any player or coach to be the guy that replaces a legend…Contreras is following Yadier Molina and he will never meet expectations…just like the guy who replaced John Wooden…impossible shoes to fill

Although it didn't show anything in there 1st inning, this is the line-up that I've been hoping to see with Croney batting #2 and Soto in the 4th spot.  We'll see if it is any better than previous lineups to generate some runs better.

We really need our offense to be able to score more than 3 runs a game more than once a week.

Yeah as soon as I saw that lineup.. I said all season long

When scoring 3+ runs: 18-3 (.857)

When scoring 2 or less: 1-14 (.066)

Its simple score 4 a night and we are golden
