BTW no one addressing the elephant in the room... Nola allowing another SB last night cost us the game late.. and btw he LOB 4 runners.. thats 3 games so far we have lost do to SB's after the 7th inning... Difference between being 19-12 and 16-15.. just saying

Nola is hanging on purely based on 1) his relationship with the starting staff, 2) the sunk talent cost we paid to acquire him, and 3) the failure of anyone else to step up and replace him. None of those things are good enough reasons to hang onto him, though, since I cannot imagine Campy or Sully performing worse than Nola in any way. He has to be the worst trade acquisition under Preller's watch.

I'm absolutely ready to move on and let Sully/Campy/Severino/a little league chainlink backstop take over.

I would be happy to move on from Nola (at age 33 don’t expect him to get significantly better). However, the 3rd point is key (in a playoff run can make a change on wishful thinking) and Nola’s experience and relationship with the staff is important until someone else proves they can handle the ML … no one has done that yet.

Campy probably would have made a legit run and replacing Nola this season but his injury likely keeps him out for another month or so. I expect to see him get a full shot late in the season … but he has to prove something given many on the board just wanted to dump him prior to this season.

Sullivan is a great story of an 8 year MiL player making the bigs … but still a very small sample size … he should have a chance to prove his merit while Campy is out.

Severino is out injured (don’t know why) … but he is not the future based on where he is in his career.

Nola (with reduced playing time for Sullivan) will carry the Padres until a decision when Campy is ready to return … then a decision point. That is just reality … and personally don’t really focus on Nola (did not expect much) but on the big bats (see Machado, et al) that are supposed to be carrying the offense … and are underperforming.

At the time (2020 in a playoff hunt) the deal for Nola was good. A catcher with a BA of .306 and OPS of .903 with Seattle was a significant upgrade over Hedges who was hitting .156 with an OPS of .591. Most were done with Hedges pathetic offense and his defense only profile was wearing thin.

One of those trades in the moment to WIN NOW (a lot of fans want that approach … although that often does not work).

Nola OPS is on a steady decline 2021 (.716) … 2022 (.650) … 2023 so far (.493) … so at 34 next season unlikely to be the #1 (or maybe even #2 catcher).

Hope Campusano is the guy and Sullivan is a capable #2 … then wait for Salas.

Problem with Campy is he has spent more time on the IL than in the 26 so far in his career.. That is not "reliability"... Even at EP last yr it seem he DH more than C, splitting time with Sullivan who did most of the C . So 2023 (once he comes back) is super important for Campy and for the Padres to know if he is the 60% C or the 40% backup..?

IF Cruz retires and Carp comes back ..I can see Campy getting some DH time in 2024... I could also see Othani as a Padre and no DH time for anyone lol..

Our AAA C tonight was 3 for 3 on SB attempts vs some speed guys btw..

Yorman Rodriguez .. who also happens to bat like Arraez .. dude is a hitting machine and has been his entire minor league career..

Why are we so bad at base stealing when everyone else is so good?

It’s not just the Catchers.

Any update on the status of Cole Hamels? He and the Padres were targeting a June date for being activated … so maybe in 6 weeks +/-.

At 39 and having not pitched much since 2019 … recognize a long shot but given his historical quality maybe a better chance than most to rebound and contribute.

His entry into the fray would force some hard calls from the current pitching staff … SP doing well and Martinez / Weathers in waiting. Wonder if Hamels would initially return as a long man in the pen (given no Pomeranz and the injuries to Morejon / Castillo)? A lot can happen in the next six weeks to alter this picture.

I know it's only been 17 ABs... BUT.. his hit tool, LHB, and positional versatility OF/1B/3B/C/DH/PH.. to me is an upgrade over ODOR even after Campy comes back.. Odor rots on the bench and doesn't do much off of it.. Sullivan is 1 a nice story 2 a contact bat that puts the ball in play and rarely SO.. with Carp/Kim/Crone 2B/1B is pretty much covered and Engel or Azocar covers 4th OF late Defensive sub, pinch runner.. so a bench of Sully/Nola/(Engel/Azocar)/(Carp/Cruz).. is fine .. and with Nola's continued struggles and Campy's injury history.. Sully can even be more than just a bench piece/ BoMel can also sub C (with 3) late in games to rest up Nola and/or Campy.. warming up to this idea ..even past 2023

Last 7 games (5 W 2 L)

Nando - .303/.329/.636  .965 OPS

Manny - .357/.455/.750. 1.205 OPS

Soto - .417/.588/.708  1.296 OPS

BTW How does everyone feel about C Wilson Contreras ?

5/$87 .. is OPSing near career #'s.. very good Offensive C with DH/LF capabilities.. C ? At least in ST Louis .. But metrics aren't terrible 5 CS out of 17 attempts.. -1 framing grade

Is he better than Nola overall 💯

Will he benefit with ex C Bo Mel and Ryan Flaherty as his Manager and Coach 💯

Would a 1 for 1 swap of Campy for Wilson + some $$$ from St Louis be worth the gamble 💯.. say $37 mil.. (so we are responsible for 5/50 $10per)

Will Contreras feel more at home in SD with all the Latin players in our roster vs a mostly white Boyz club in StLouis 💯

Any thoughts?? Sure would have been nice to have Contreras at the plate at Petco (where his career numbers are excellent) 2 x's with the bases loaded.. vs Nola..

Seems like we can "steal" this All Star who Musgrove built a bond with last classic in July.. ST Louis about had it with him.. a big part could be he replaced Molina (HOF) and in more ways than one he ain't close to that at Catcher.. But definetely > Nola.. who could catch Yu.. Sullivan could catch 1or 2 guys and be late inning sub.. and Contreras could catch 3 of the 5 regularly ... going beyond 2023 he replaces Cruz at DH and can offer some insurance in case Soto leaves in FA..in LF..

Again thoughts?
