2023 Season
Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 13, 2023, 10:32 amAlfaro has one of the best arms behind the plate in the league. He was near the top of the pop time leaderboards last year. He went 5 for 30 throwing out runners. Nola certainly isn't helping the problem, but it's more about the guys on the mound than the ones behind the plate.

Solid pop.. ok speed... BUT also a cannon for an arm... I mean how much longer do we let Nola C in SD?... The New Rules will only expose him left and right and his Offesnse is aging quickly and not in a good way...
Not supporting a long term commitment to Nola but:
1. His replacement for #1 catcher will be Campusano in the future IF the Padres let him play enough to earn it … Nola (mainly for his work with Darvish) will become the 2nd catcher;
2. The “idea” of a better Severino has to be pushed against the fact that with his ML experience and 29 other teams that could use an upgrade at at least one of the ML catcher slots … Severino ending up signing a minor league contract with the Padres … maybe MLB scouts don’t see the same upside.
Since catchers typically don’t move at the trade deadline to contenders … we will see next winter after the Padres know what they have in Campusano.
I'll put it this way.. What would Nola fetch in the FA market? ..Severino at least got a "split' deal as did Alfaro...
If Alfaro didn't get hurt last yr he would be #1 C right now and Campy #2... He had beaten out Nola and then got Hurt and crashed and burned...
Also we can live without Nola to be fair.. more than we can continue with him... with the new rules and all.. I'd take that 30SB /5 CS from Nola right now... 15/1 is projecting to 200 SB /18 CS... atm... we can't win anything with that

I am not so much defending Nola as pointing out that our pitchers are "also" an issue with SB's.
We need the best defensive Catcher we can have...whoever that is IMO.
But I'm guessing our pitchers are having a large say in who we have in the lineup right now.
I would also think that's about to change...if Nola continues to struggle Campy will finally get his chance to play more regularly.

Yeh, the pitchers (and pitching coach) have a lot to say on the catcher … and pretty sure they consider all the aspects of being a catcher … not just the runners thrown out stat … have to weigh in how they handle the pitchers, call the games, block pitches, etc.

Yes....Grisham,Sugar,Kim should all be running more.
Tatis is going to change our dynamic in many ways I believe.
He's a catalyst for this team on the field and in the dugout.
His energy and excitement is contagious.
We've been missing that "something"...that intensity and energy.
I truly believe we will look a lot different after 4/20

Quote from fenn68 on April 14, 2023, 5:31 pmOverall the Padres are not providing the expected offense (they are about middle of the pack in most stats).
However, one stat that could be impacted a bit by "luck" is BABIP ... and with that stat the Padres are .262 (27th in MLB). Normally over a season teams cluster around the .290-.300 mark. In 2022 the Padres ended at .289 (19th). Sure, some of this issue is how hard the balls are being hit but some is just were the balls went (to the fielders).
So, being optimistic, we should see some better results going forward and the "good luck" and "bad luck" normalize. Of course it would help if the hitters made solid contact and hit it were they ain't.

Well tonight at least 4 hits were either stellar defensive plays vs us.. or In Kim's case ball was hit extremely hard into a line out double play..
