$5.4 isn't that much for a .400 OBP lead off hitter that can play 1b and has several years of control........at least IMO.

Diaz doesnt seem very fleet of foot? Dont know if you want a base clogger leading off. But is seems like a nice bat for #5 or #6 in the line up, keeping the line going, and providing some protection for the bigger sluggers.

No he isn't that fast and as most know I really like fast guys...especially at the top of the order.
BUT,these days it seems more and more lead off hitters aren't...they are just guys who excel at getting on.
In Diaz's case he's a doubles hitter so won't have to steal much to get in scoring position plus....with the big three hitting behind him he's gonna score anyway most of the time as they are xtra base hit machines.

Be careful not to over estimate TB’s desire to move either Arozarena or Diaz … unless it is for a quality return.
Don’t forget they are both good enough to be in demand by a number of other teams raising the trade value for them. Four years control for Arozarena and two years control for Diaz.
Plus they could wait it out until the end of ST or defer to trade deadline to angle for max value.

On Renfroe, sort of the same deal that Brewers probably get a decent return for an $11MM Renfroe for one year rather than a non-tender. On the FA market he still will be pricey. Save the money for SP (or at least after the SP becomes a known with the cost).

I would guess that most on here agree, that even at league minimum, Jayson Heyward is not worth a look. Even during ST.
He is still only 33, and I cant remember any substantial injuries recently. Maybe just drawing a blank. And he is a LHH, corner OFer. No HR power except for 2 outlier years, but even when he was slumping BA wise, his OBP was about 70-80 points higher than his BA. Not sure if getting out of CHC could help, or if he just didnt age well and is done??????

Since we're speculating where people end up, how about a slugging bench (all or nothing!) of Gallo from the left side and Franmil Reyes from the right! Scary power but a black hole in the line-up most of the time with high K rates. Probably could get both for under 15M in total salaries. Both could last long into the free agency period so might come in at bargain prices around late January/early February 2023.
Heyward is a big "NO!". Nothing left in that tank, not even at league minimum.

Tbf Gallo is a GG OF with a track record of very Good OBP..and Power... Franmil is a one trick pony..Power
I would sign Framnil on a minor league deal with a ST invite as AAA depth.. no room in our bench for a DH only backup
Gallo could be our starting LF on a 1/8 type deal..he is an AJP guy so wouldn't put his signing as much of a surprise.. Gallo in LF > Profar AND if he finds his Rangers days self in SD.. you have a tremendous 3 outcome stud in the OF...
Azocar > Heyward (so hard pass).. wtf happened to this dude man.. he crashed and burned hard

Heyward is the Poster Boy for signing a big contract and then immediately stop producing.

Jim Bowden predicting SD signs Rizzo.
With the QO attached…..who thinks could still happen?
A couple reasons it could….first our window is wide open “right now”….and adding a GG defender at 1b who has LH power sure fits.
Imagine if you will:
Tatis-RH
Soto-LH
Machado-RH
Rizzo-LH
Now imagine adding a high OBP guy to lead off and moving everyone down one spot.
Also,while AJ (and I) wouldn’t like to lose any draft picks our 2nd rounder this year would be like #65…not insignificant but not like in years past when it would be in the 30’s.

I would not bet on it.
Side: have heard some concern about a decline in Rizzo’s defense in the last couple of seasons … but then again not putting his defense as a key to signing him.

I can remember the national types discussing his FA and the type of contract he should get … almost universal agreement that was the type of contract he should get.
Note: I did not.
I can recall they kept hyping his young age and his gold glove defense and sort of glossing over his hitting beyond his one outstanding system.
After he began under performing his contract … comments came out that speed (and the related defense) tend to fall off sooner than the hit skill and he did not really have the hit skill to start with.
Caution listening to the national media types who like to ride the hot name … but no detail analysis.

If Gallo wants to sign a split deal that pays him like 500k in the minors and a few million in the majors sure. I wouldn't gamble any more than that on him. He's been terrible for long enough that I don't think anyone should expect a bounce back.
