2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on November 15, 2022, 3:22 amSince many see Alfaro ($3.6MM) on a tight payroll as a non-tender candidate this week … but with only Campusano behind Nola might they keep Alfaro around (risk is only $900K) seeking a trade partner and at least get something in return.
First a lot of need for catchers but although Alfaro last season did not deliver all that much looking at total stats ... breaking down his splits suggests he would have more value to other teams. Consider:
Home … (142 AB) … .524 OPS
Away … (114 AB) … .842
————-
v LHP … (67 AB) … .773
v RHP … (189 AB) … .630
————-
Pre-All Star … (186 AB) … .743
Post-All Star … (70 AB) … .467
IF marketed well focusing on his work AWAY from PETCO, vs LHP, and early performance before mid-season injury … at $3.6MM he still should have some appeal.
In the interim over the winter he would provide some insurance at the catcher slot making Nola / Campusano more available as trade chips. Also, with a pretty weak bench, he may still hold some value to the Padres as a better hitter that some of the other roster options on the roster.
Could make a case that holding on Alfaro (for $900K if released later) might be the smart move until they actually get a full set of upgrades for the 26 man. No current 40 man issue.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 15, 2022, 5:42 amCurious what,if any, value Campy has on the trade market?
I'm sure AJ has thrown his name out enough times that "he" knows.
Keeping...or not keeping Alfaro may be a sign as to Campy's value.
My guess is AJ is feverishly working the trade market now.....so he will have a clearer idea of what free agents to target.
Or will it be the other way round?
I'm guessing the former cause waiting on free agents you risk losing most to other teams.

I posted something about AJP "rejecting" offers for Campy about 6 weeks ago.. cant find it now.. but it was a mlbtraderumors piece..that said something to the effect "many have tried unsuccessfully to aquire Campusano from Padres".. so maybe more value there vs what we think

That would then also imply Campy has more value to AJ than we think.
If that's all true then it makes sense that we would let Alfaro go and run with Nola/Campy.
Unless of course Campy ends up being the key to a trade AJ can't resist in the end.
So basically...we have no idea what he's gonna do
Again
Keeps it interesting that's for sure

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 15, 2022, 6:23 amAlso just because someone is left of the 40 today doesn't mean SDP don't value him.. say an OF in A ball ..if u 40 man that dude and later on you need that spot on he 40 someone can claim off waivers "no protection"..if we leave him expose to Rule V no one likely drafts him as the jump to MLB and sticking very small chance ..plus in Rule V if one gets drafted away from team I believe Pads can pull someone else off.. where as of a waiver claim you can't and player is gone and can be in minors for the acquiring team.. something else to keep in mind when seeing Pads using 3-4 spots to protect but not going all 40 today..

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 15, 2022, 6:32 amWasn't this dude the guy that was an excellent "two way" hitter and pitcher in College and there was talk about him being Othani like ..pre Othani debut?
Rays just released him.. as they face roster crunch.. Lets convert him back to a hitter and see if we can get sine traction 😆

Quote from fenn68 on November 15, 2022, 6:33 amDoes Campy have trade value … yes but the question is how much at this moment vs his value to the Padres (in Preller’s mind).
I would guess that Preller still has Campy as a trade chip BUT not likely in a one for one deal. Preller is likely on the hunt for some impact adds now and Campy by himself will not get that, however, Campy in a package with some other pieces might tip the scales to get a quality immediate upgrade.
Given the Padres sit with Nola (3 years) and Alfaro (1 year) then a long gap to the next generation … keeping Campusano (and his upside, control, low cost) is worth a lot to the Padres future … so Preller’s price tag on him will be very high.

Tough career for McKay … just plagued with injuries and now TJ in September and will miss 2023 (at age 27).
He should get a minor league deal from someone but in 2023 not as a pitcher … but potentially (depending on TJ recovery) as a minor league DH. Think that would make him a minor league FA after 2023. Then in 2024 (if he resigns or is added to a 40 man) make the call pitching or hitting.

Next generation C is not even signed yet.. Ethan Salas #1 International signing .coming to SDP in January.. he is what 17 yrs old ..probably 5 yrs away if everything goes well.. King Jr (22 draft) is 4 to 5 yrs away as well... so yes the gap is pretty big ...
Why I think Campy holds a lot of value..if he can be at least 1/2 the equation for 4-5yrs (or we get a controllable guy like Kirk) then we have our C situation under control for 1/2 a decade til the babies are ready..
