2023 offseason

I'm going to need something a little more exciting than a 26 year old long reliever in A+ ball.
Not long ago this was our off season....boy have things changed.
We're so spoiled with big trades/signings it's like...."when is something gonna happen already?" now.
I guess we are getting withdrawal symptoms.
Did hear Preller say that little should happen until the Winter Meetings. Still likely some more minor tinkering until then again this is Preller … so something could come out of the shadows.
A "little" to AJP is like an entire offseason for most teams lol

Quote from BoosterSD on November 14, 2022, 9:12 amWith the state of our farm system, and the willingness of Seidler to stroke checks, I see Preller mainly sticking to signing FAs and possible extensions to current Padres.
So instead of trading for Arozarena, we could see a reunion with Renfroe if/when MIL cuts him loose, depending on his FA market.
Instead of filling 1B, could we not sign a mid level, decent priced 2B FA, keep Kim at SS, Tatis in LF, and slide Crone to 1B. Someone like a Ceasar Hernandez, or similar LHH 2B?
Really dont have many prospect dollars to spend in trade, and probably limited to about $30-35M to spend in FA. And really need 2-3 SPs. Maybe Taijuan Walker, Zach Davies, and the resign of Martinez. That should take about $25M, leaving $9M towards a signing of Hernandez, Odor, or Villar, and then two really decent bench pieces to fill in with Azocar and Campusano.

I could see Preller looking for the best deal on either a 2B (Cronenworth to 1b) or go directly to a 1B guy. I will throw in the name of Josh Harrison ... older and should be low cost at this point but still serviceable and a team leader type ... probably would like to be on a contender this late in his career.
Agree on not trading as the primary add mode ... but not really into spending big on a FA position player (maybe a little more for a LHH but not much) ... Renfroe will still be in demand as a FA and get a pretty high contract. Put the money into SP.

Yeah I am pretty sure Renfroe is in that 3/39 to 3/51 $$$ range .. if Brewers want to move on and are likely to non-tender him and Padres see value in 1yr $11mil or so projected arb.. AJP might be willing to give up a Rule V type decision or 40 man roster type protected spec to convince the Brewers to just get something for him instead of just an outright non-tender get nothing for him... I am sure others will be knocking as 1yr $11mil for a slug 1st COF is pretty cheap... could an Efrain Contreras + Tirso Ornelas type package entice Brewers to trade 1 yr of Renfroe to us???

Lead him off in front of Soto/Tatis/Machado?
Yes please
Not sure that is where I would put $5.4MM AND give up the prospects / players to get him out of TB. He had a 3.8 WAR last year and has two years control …
I don't think it would take much as the Rays don't want to pay him.
$5.4 isn't that much for a .400 OBP lead off hitter that can play 1b and has several years of control........at least IMO.
A power hitting 1b will cost 4 times this and won't be getting on base like that.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 14, 2022, 11:32 amThe only way I would chase Renfroe again, is if he is non tendered from MIL. No way Im sending prospects and paying him $11M± for 2023. Let him go FA, and IF you can get him for between $8-10M, then swoop in. If someone wants to pay him over $10M, not really interested in him over $10M.

Given the choice I'd take Diaz.. but also Rays may just keep him for the $5mil.. and I believe Diaz has more control (vs Renfroe).. Diaz ability to playb1B/3B and OF is sort of a much better fielding Drury with a completely different approach at the plate from the Right side.. vs LHP like Drury Diaz is a BEAST but unlike Drury he has been throughout his career (not just 2022).. Diaz is like Profar vs RHP and like Drury (2022) vs LHP.. with better BA and OBP skills than both by a lot...Diaz leading off vs RHP and batting 4th vs LHP would be ideal while covering 1B.. and allowing Manny to rest 1 or 2 times a week at DH.. obviously this would mean Tatis covers our COF spot.. Leaving DH as the only? With lots of options (internally) or rotational.. maybe a Vet bench/DH ABs seeking bat to go with Rodario/Azocar/Dixon and Campy would be the last move (if we were to get Diaz) position player wise..

Diaz doesnt seem very fleet of foot? Dont know if you want a base clogger leading off. But is seems like a nice bat for #5 or #6 in the line up, keeping the line going, and providing some protection for the bigger sluggers.
Could be wrong about his speed though,

No .. just throwing it out there..
Diaz>Renfroe for me
Also not giving up specs really as privatizing others "to protect" like BP Lugo and Cosgrove for example from our Rule V guys.. Instead of "risk" losing an Ornelas and IF say Padres like Vela/Waldron more than Contreras ..why RISK losing them ..when we could simply move them to plug a hole big or small.. and protecting the 4 or 5 guys that could prove useful to us.. in essence exchanging 2 would be roster spots with little chance to help us in 2023 (aka Contreras + Ornelas) for one (Renfroe or Diaz) + (protect say Lugo) two that will 💯 help us in 2023 if u catch my drift..

Good example...do we want to give up prospects for Renfroe and his .300 OBP and pay him $11 mil rather than get Diaz for half that and his .400 OBP?
No .. just throwing it out there..
Diaz>Renfroe for me
Also not giving up specs really as privatizing others "to protect" like BP Lugo and Cosgrove for example from our Rule V guys..
