2023 offseason

PreviousPage 93 of 376Next

Next 2 important dates

Nov 15 (Tuesday) 40 man roster set (protect would be Ryle V guys or not decisions)

Nov 17 - non tender deadline for would be arb players

Both of these dates usually lead to minor trades around the mlb

I expect the Brewers to be extremely busy.. no team in baseball has even close to the $80  mil projected arb decisions as their cheap ass team does

Hunter Renfroe (5.165 years): $11.2 million

Brent Suter (5.161): $3.1 million

Victor Caratini (5.051): $2.8 million

Luis Perdomo (5.034): $1 million

Brandon Woodruff (4.161): $11 million

Matt Bush (4.132): $2 million

Willy Adames (4.105): $9.2 million

Trevor Gott (4.057): $1.4 million

Corbin Burnes (4.049): $11.4 million

Eric Lauer (4.033): $5.2 million

Jandel Gustave (4.027): $900,000

Adrian Houser (4.010): $3.6 million

Rowdy Tellez (4.004): $5.3 million

Luis Urias (3.120): $4.3 million

Hoby Milner (3.068): $1.1 million

Devin Williams (3.056): $3.2 million

Mike Brosseau (3.031): $1.2 million

Keston Hiura (3.009): $2 million

Padres could address all their needs right here.. Discounted bin on aisle 3

LAD Killer SP Lauer would be a low key great add

Wonder if there is a looming issue with signing Martinez?

The was pretty much consensus that the Padres would get a deal done with him before his opt out … same positive view since BUT he has not signed.

Did the contract structure hit an impasse and Preller / Martinez are taking some time for Martinez to assess the FA market? If so, one implication could be that Preller went as high as he would go and has just put the decision in Martinez’ hands. Probably and offer with a time limit since Preller will be in pursuit of SP options that require salary space to sign.

Did the Suarez signing cause Martinez to up his demand (given the size of that deal) or did the Suarez signing take some money off the table for upping any offer to Martinez … or maybe a bit of both?

No issue in signing Martinez … just a matter of price.

Rafael Montero re-signs with Hou.

3/$35!

Yikes….he has .1bWAR for his career and had a 6+ era in 2021.

Makes the Suarez deal look good.

Yeah I thought (heard) they were close too. Not much happened yesterday in baseball so maybe they put an offer out there for him to consider by the end of the weekend..or simply he has an offer and wants to see if there is = or > opportunity elsewhere for him before accepting it..

So far AJP looks like a genius with Musgrove and Suarez deals ahead of FA

I like Martinez but as a Starter there are 10-12 better options IMO that should be around the same cost…maybe even less.

We’ll see.

Great! Takes another RP off the market at a high price.

Got to be makes Padre RP more valuable in trade talks … even those further down the pecking order.

All about price at this point … and the ability to actually sign two alternative of equal talent.

One point that was made on signing Martinez is that he was a SP in Japan and only a limited shot with the Padres … so maybe OK as a #5 but his work in the pen in 2022 remains a fallback (a good fallback for the Padres) if he struggles at #5 or they add two better options. A multi-year deal does add some protection for both SP and RP in 2024 with the FA of Darvish, Snell, Hader, Pomeranz, Garcia and whatever happens with the other two SP for 2023. Plus add that he seems to be a healthy option.

Given what we have seen with Diaz, Suarez, Montero … not sure any pitching will be cheap. MLBTR had the perpetually injured Clevinger at $10MM. So “cheaper” may translate to health / rebound gambles.
