1. Kepler (LHH, 29) … 2 WAR type based on very good defense in RF but just average offense. Note was much better back a few years ago. Downside is one year / $8.5MM (with a 2024 option at $10MM)

2. Larnach (LHH, 25) … 1 WAR type (but with upside) … was a top draft pick and top prospect when he was coming up … league minimum with 5 year control. Good power but high K%.

3. Wallner (LHH, 24) … prospect type in AAA … minimum with 6 year control … big power / big K% … would be a pure roll the dice if he can hit ML pitching. He would be in the prospect for prospect mode deal

Each should require a different level of RP from the Padres but there appears to be a match for trade purposes.

Cleveland would not do it … they are AL Central champs lead by Bieber (and his sub-3.00 ERA) … Bieber’s value to Cleveland is greater than what Reynolds adds with Bieber’s loss.

PITT maybe / maybe not … they would want elite prospects but Lesko is far away from the ML and Merrill is still a few years out. If they move Reynolds might angle with another team for top prospects closer to the ML.

SD probably yes … win in current window … try to extend Bieber (he is still only about 27). We are talking Cy Young type pitcher.

I think Merrill is 1 yr away tbh.. he is leading the AFL top specs in hitting while facing AA/AAA players.. I see him A+ to AA mid season in 2023..and maybe AA to MLB like Tatis/CJ .. did in 2024.. unlike CJ .. his approach and baseball IQ are off the charts.. I know he is a baby.. but he has that IT factor and adjusts easily to greater velo/control/2nd dairy stuff... I dont want to trade him.. as Crone hits arb 2 and 3.. I think the prudent thing will be to move him OR Kim (next offseason) and roll with Merrill as a rookie at either 2B or SS

Or 3B if Manny opts out … or 1B if Padres can’t find a 1B … or OF if that fits … or just a versatile player to allow others to DH.

No real desire to trade Merrill.

With Soto only 2 years control and could be a real long shot (with Boras as his agent) to sign. Not much hitting wise in the system arriving in 2 years … Merrill becomes a hold for me.

Me too.. Merrill.. Zavala CF 2025.. and Castenon 3B 2025 look like MLB bats for sure

I can see a world in which AJP goes Senga + Taillon and resigns Martinez ...then Moves Snell + Hader + Campy (need /need/need for Twins) for Arraez.. Twins ate 1 yr of Correa they can 💯 eat Snell and Hader while positioning themselves to win the Central ...if Snell is one and done in SD and we sign/set our 2024 rotation with Yu (extension) and Taillon + Senga + Martinez additions .. Snell like Hader (especially if AJP believes in Suarez/Pomz/Garcia being 987) would be a nice swap of $$ while improving our team in 2023 AND 2024.. wouldn't move either Snell (unless we add 2 SP and resign Martinez) o r Hader (if there was concerns Suarez couldn't close) but if we do A.. why not follow it up with B.. Arraez 1B Crone 2B Kim SS Tatis COF.. fills all holes except DH and $$ in and out still keeps us fiscally sound should we want to add a C (cheaper than Alfaro or trade for 1) wouldn't do it unless AJP thinks Senga + Taillon + Arraez > Hader + Snell as far as Winning in 23.. the beyond 23 ? Is obvious as all 3 would be here and Snell and Hader would be gone...
