Im not a huge Gallo fan either, but Preller is!
And I agree at that price, I would be a hard pass as well.
I wouldnt sign him for more than $3-4M.

two open slots remain for bench upgrades ... one may be "stronger" as a 1B option. There will be upgrades but until then Dixon and Batten are the incumbents that are on the bubble. Plus with only Soto and Cronenworth productive LHH (Grisham is LHH but not a key to the offense) ... one upgrade at 1B/DH should be a LHH.
I agree with this whole heartedly. We are so RHH heavy. Need some balance. The bat add, whether it be corner OFer or 1B, really needs to be LH. Thats why the likes of Benintendi, Bell, or Gallo have appeal to me over guys like Drury or Myers.
Not a fan of Gallo but why would he sign with SD ... not a great hitter's park and also will have to hit in LA and SF ... neither great for LH power hitters. He needs to prove to someone that he is worth something by playing on a hitter friendly park(s) ... think NL or AL Central. Should take a "discount" just to hit in someplace like CINN.
He has played the last two years on contenders (NYY/LAD) so the lure of a contender is not that compelling having learned that guarantees nothing.
In NY had a below average 84 OPS+ and in LA a below average 83 OPS+. Neither team expressed any desire to retain him.

He is like the other guy to ever hit a ball where Alvarez did in Houston straight away CF.. 450 Ft bomb.. dont think any stadium is too big for him.. also remember new schedule = only 7 road games vs LAD and SF and we play ALL teams in MLB at least 3 games
And no way in Hell am I suggesting 8 to 10.. I am all in on Gallo at 1/5 or less

With the contract that Nimmo will probably get (over $20M per year), and the QO penalties draft wise. I just don't see how a Nimmo signing is realistic.
Although I would be shocked to see it, would not be upset about it though. Would play him in RF, slide Soto back to LF, and leave Grisham in CF. And Nimmo is LHH, one of my priorities.
That's why my comment was following the "I wish I knew how high payroll could go".
I was not counting on signing Martinez and although he was good for us out of the Pen are we about to give him Starter money?
I think I would rather sign Davies to a 3-4 year deal unless we give Martinez middle Reliever money?

I have looked at him in the past, and the thing with Tellez, most of his slugging numbers are a product of hitting at Miller Park, and against RHP. His road numbers are not very good, nor his numbers vs. LHP. He would probably be a platoon guy, and not sure his power would play in Petco.
So, IF MIL non tenders him, I would thing about his bat at 1B for the right money. I would not give up any prospects in a trade for him.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 11, 2022, 1:14 pmWe are at the point in roster construction we don't need to "settle" for anyone.
We need high OBP and low K guys...and of course I always want more speed.
Gallo "was" a high OBP with power.....but since he left Tx he's a low OBP,High K guy with good defense and HR power.
Pass.
I'd rather have Renfroe even though he's RH or even give La Mole' a chance at $1 mil to take the DH job.

Even if the $22M was not a big deal. Not my money. With the condition of our farm team, is he worth losing 2 draft picks and $1M in the International Draft Pool as well?
Thats at least 3 prospects that we would lose by signing him.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 11, 2022, 1:18 pmThe one area with a lot of good choices in Free Agency is Starting Pitching.
Why I hope we don't sign Martinez as a Starter.
FA Starters who had 2.0+ WAR in 22'
Thor/Heaney/Wacha/Stripling/Eflin/Miley/Walker/Quintana/Taillon.
And that's not even getting to the "big boys".

Quote from JasonE135 on November 11, 2022, 1:42 pmQuote from fenn68 on November 11, 2022, 11:18 amBased on my "you are here" calculation ... Padres are about $6MM under the first threshold ($233MM). If as reported they are close to signing Martinez ... that will already push them over the first threshold and probably leave them in the high teens to get to the second threshold ... not adding multiple quality pieces off the FA market with something under $20MM ... assuming that the Padres even want to go that high.
So without a trade of a significant AAV salary (and that is really only Hader without creating a major hole) ... need to pare down that wish list of adds.
If no trade (go mega RP to win) might have to choose between:
a. SP (Senga) and then scramble on low end hitters from somewhere
b. 1 quality hitter and then bet on Groome / Morejon / Avila for #5/6 (that also puts a ton of faith in Martinez)
Possible other trades of RP could be made not to save AAV but to add "serviceable" upgrades ... just not major pieces.
I would be pleased as can be if we can just sign Senga to be our #4 starter and re-sign Martinez to be our #5. That leaves Morejon, Avila and Groome to be our #6-8 starters and injury replacements, which we will need. I see Morejon as our new Martinez, which he will need considering he has to build himself up from 47 innings this year. I think the 106-IP that we got from Martinez this year will be about the max the we can expect from Morejon, but he would be a very high quality replacement starter/reliever.
As far as going cheap for the bats, how about Corey Dickerson in LF? He shouldn't cost more than the 1 year, $5 million contract that he got this year. He is a consistent bat that you can expect a .260-.280 avg, .300-.330 obp and a .700-.800 OPS. Not great numbers but he is always around average to a bit better. He is a LHH LF and, most importantly, he will be cheap.
This would allow the Padres to keep Tatis at SS(which I hate) and shift Kim and Crone to the right for our IF against RHP, then Tatis can shift to the OF to replace one of our 3-LHH OF against LHP and Dixon can play 1B. Maybe Tellez as a DH/1B if he comes cheap.
Don't get me wrong I would love for the Padres to spend more, but this would allow the Padres to focus most of the available money on pitching and still come away with a quality hitter or 2 on the cheap.
