2023 offseason

Back to SP.. Crone 4.1 WAR for Pablo Lopez 3.0 + Garrett Cooper 1B 1.1.. could Marlins be open to such a move.. heard they are looking for better contact hitters ..and Crone is amongst the upper half of the league in contact rate

On CBS web page, they listed 10 players that could end up FA after being non tendered during the arbitration process. Names of interest for SD, Candelario - DET a SH. Dominic Smith, Hiura, our old pal Franmil, and Bellinger.

All would be relatively low cost gambles, and all except for Reyes, can play 1B. With Smith and Bellinger being LH, and my preference. Smith could be a sneaky get, perhaps his bat failings are related to not playing 1B, some guys just dont like to change positions.

I would prefer Berti over Cooper, like his speed. And he has more positional versatility than Cooper.

I am ok with that too... but Berti had a 2+ WAR so we likely would have to add a little to Jake to get it done.. Jake + Khner or something for Lopez and Berti.. we plug a hole and have options for 2B to cover Jake position wise and upgrade #4 SP with a controllable arm.. $$ wise not a huge difference.. if payroll is tight .. such move/s need to be made.. even if payroll is not tight this seems like just a solid baseball move for both sides

Maybe I am getting to little for Jake if that's the view of LHB

Three things to keep in mind with this scenario.

1. Lopez is only controlled for 2 more seasons, 2023 and 2024.

2. It would be a salary addition of about $3.6M this season, since Lopez and Berti combine for an estimated $8M, compared to Crones estimated $4.4M. And would be even more for 2024.

3. Berti is 4 years older than Crone, and how will his speed age? Since that is his calling card.

I would still not be excited about the loss of Crone, his LHH bat, and his run production.

Berti would be exciting at the top of the line up, and could possibly get 50+ SBs next season.

You know, the shift doesnt effect LHHs only.

How does the elimination of the shift go towards improving Myers BA and OBP?

Does this make him a little more valuable as well? Still not $20M, but does he become a better option at the $6-8M range?

We might be!

I saw that Campy got a start at 1B in the Dominican league. I think it's probably just about getting him ABs while getting the other catchers some work, but it's an interesting development.
