If we don't land Senga I wonder if Martinez/DAVIES might be the way to go?

Davies is a innings eating #5 that should be at least better(more consistent) than Manaea was and I don't think he's going to break the bank.

Or,if we sign Senga than forego Martinez and also sign Davies OR run with the in house options as the #5.

I have always stated how Davies and SD just fit. His best season was in SD, and at what his contract should be ($2-3.5M) a very smart use of dollars IMO.

Yeah if AJ would have listened to me at the deadline Davies would have started that game 4 vs Philly with a 4-0 lead and likely we win that game.. always liked Davies..and in SD he shaves a good .50 off his ERA like many SP do..

Given the landscape of adding hitters … might they keep Alfaro (only $3.6MM) as the part of a catcher / DH / 1B mix with Nola and Campusano. He may not catch all that much but his presence is insurance for injury and if they swing Nola / Campusano as C/DH prevents loss of the DH (in game) if the catcher gets injured.

Not a great hitter (good start to 2022) and had injury down the stretch … loved in the clubhouse … can get that clutch hit … can play C/1B/LF/DH so a versatile bench piece.

Put him ahead of Sullivan … Dixon …. Batten … and probably until he proves himself Rosario. He may return.

We can get a better bat for $3.6 -$4 mil.. not everyone going to get Paid ..and as u mentioned Mazara would be a better bat.. But like Joc 1/6.. Drury 1/min ST invite.. Bats will be available cheap... the key is getting a bit lucky with the right guy not getting signed... Going to throw in an obscured guy ..KBO smashing former Padre J. Pirela as such a dude

The issue is timing and that actual ability to sign those under value alternatives. Would guess those types falling through the cracks are late winter / ST signs … and Preller will try to make that happen … if they are there and willing to go to the Padres.

Alfaro is insurance if all that does not come together. Remember they can cut him ins ST and pay only 25% of his ARB around $3.6MM … so a $900K hedge. Probably can at that point swing a PTNL trade (always a need for a veteran back-up in MLB) and clear the entire salary.

If we bring Martinez back ..dont mind the idea of an opener Morejon/Wilson/Cristmat/other every 6th game with Martinez coming in for 4-5 IP his sweet zone.. and thus keeping him on the analytics path to a 3-3.50 ERA path and not 4.30+.. with out BP depth I see this as a good/great strategy for Pads

Wouldn't Campusano in essence be a better (upside too) DH option though vs Alfaro? Or giving a chance to 20/20 guy Mr Rosario.. I mean Phillies and Astros both had rookies in their lineups in post season..at one point or another you have to give a rookie (especially a top 10 org guy/s) a shot at regular time

One time Padres Franmil Reyes and Anderson Espinoza were outrighted by the Cubs which allowed them to become free agents.  Many other minor league players we traded away in multi-player deals are now either free agents or Rule 5 eligible, like Joey Cantillo, Omar Cruz and Blake Hunt, so it will be interesting to see if any surface for our minor league rosters for 2023.

Reyes ..another "Bat" we could get at Minimum..

Yeh, Reyes just fell apart … a lot of injuries and hitting evaporated as a DH only.

Padres liked him (as well as his teammates) … I would gamble on a minor league deal with a roster invite …given both CLEV and CUBS just gave up on him and no teams wanted to claim him … should be a good low cost gamble to tuck in AAA.

If the Giants can spend 19.65 million on Pederson, makes you wonder what kind of money they are willing to throw around to land Judge.  Surprised they couldn't get Rodon to bite for an extension.  The Pederson QO and that for Martin Perez have to be the biggest surprises for me by MLB clubs.

At this point not a Campusano vs Alfaro question (I see both) … more certainty than Sullivan as the 3rd catcher or Batten / Dixon as a bench bat.

My only issue with Rosario is going into the season relying on him … but have him ahead of Batten, Sullivan, and Dixon and that will get him a lot of playing time. One caution on Rosario (as I recall) is based on his HOME vs. ROAD splits last season. HOME great / AWAY bad. He has a lot still to prove to move beyond a bench piece.

People are saying 8yrs /$360 ($45mil per) for Judge .. easily the worst contract besides Redon.. no way in hell Judge even cones close to 2022 ever again.. and wirh his injury history he may only play the equivalent of 5 of those yrs..DH and all.. absurd!

Willson Contreras (31 years old, )

Mike Zunino (32, )

Omar Narváez (31),

Gary Sánchez (30,)

Christian Vázquez (31),

Tucker Barnhart (32),

Curt Casali (34),

Jason Castro (36)

Roberto Pérez (34)

Kevin Plawecki (32)

Austin Hedges (30)

Sandy León (34)

Robinson Chirinos (39)

Kurt Suzuki (39)

Andrew Knapp (31)

Austin Romine (34)

I see at least 6 maybe 7 > Catchers vs Alfaro that will command less than 3.6 mil.. and with the increase in SB assumption even Hedges back cheap could be a nice compliment to Nola/Campy if we keep Campy and add such a C ..Campy almost 💯 would need to be a regular at DH

BTW they are ranked on total WAR for last 2 seasons combined.. with Contreras at 5.5 and Ronine at -0.9 .. they are the C FA class of 2023
