2023 offseason
Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 11, 2022, 8:29 amQuote from Jeremy Hill on November 11, 2022, 8:21 amI saw that Campy got a start at 1B in the Dominican league. I think it's probably just about getting him ABs while getting the other catchers some work, but it's an interesting development.
1st 30 PAs
333 .367 .556 .922
CAMPUSANO in Dominican only 4 SOs..
#1 making me feel better about Campy C/DH maybe 1B option for 2023
#2 helping his trade value in case an opportunity arises
💯

A C/1B/DH option is worth it's weight in Gold

Quote from fenn68 on November 11, 2022, 8:34 amI can't see trading Cronenworth from a team that is looking for hitters (especially LHH) ... had 88 RBI, LHH without the shift should have a better BA/OBP, 3 years low cost control, and a plus defensive 2B.

Not my choice either but again if $$ is tight and Merrill is untouchable... if we have SS/2B covered with Kim/Tatis .. for the next few yrs.. and can use Jake to "improve" SP/LF/1B/DH *2 or 3 positions* we need to explore those options..especially if is for controllable SP stud/s..

So in your world as it is now..Tatis is in the OF.. making 1B/DH our only need this offseason.. again if that's the best for the TEAM I am 💯 on board.. BUT we also need 2 SP .. I think we can cover DH (Dixon/Campy/etc) or at least try with these 2..and if not can always add a ST (FA left over bat) or deadline deal..Still think Othani (if he still is a LAA expiring) would be a "put us over the top" type deadline deal..

Quote from fenn68 on November 11, 2022, 8:55 amHere is my baseline current 40 man roster for position players (somewhat ranked)
- The core:
- Machado
- Soto
- Tatis
- Kim
- Cronenworth
- Nola
- Grisham
- The mid level
- Azocar
- Campusano
- Alfaro
- The bubble
- Rosario
- Dixon
- Batten
- The 14th man (odd man out) in AAA
- Sullivan
Yes need upgrade bats ... but not going to replace everyone we don't like ... and Sullivan, Batten, and Dixon the most vulnerable. Plus with the current roster vacancies and a glut of those being pitchers and the most probable Rule 5 adds being pitchers ... good chance if hitters are added it is increasing the hitters on the 40 man at the expense of "excess" pitchers.
I stick with two concepts: 1) don't make a move until you have to (too early puts you in a hole for replacement); 2) don't move a player early even if not in love with the performance unless you have an equal or better replacement in hand.
Padres will not know who they have in play until the late signings in ST ... can't go into 2023 with only 14 position players on the 40 man (and for me at least 3 are not ML quality on a contender) ... so (maybe except for Sullivan) need to hold on the base 13 and add to that mix over the winter (ML or MiL with an invite to ST).
So, back to my idea of not dealing Cronenworth (or any or any other hitter) for pitching rather deal RP for hitters as upgrades as a compliment to the ML/MiL FA.

Can't see AJP going after any QO guys with that penalty.. for one the 2nd rd is where he has done his best work recently and he aint giving up $1mil Intl.. I mean I can see AJP adding Intl $$ with a Garcia type trade.. but I can't see him surrendering it..
Here are the penalties for signing a player with the qualifying offer:
2nd/5th-round picks + $1M int'l: BOS, LAD, NYM, NYY, PHI, SDP
2nd + $500K int'l: ATL, CHC, HOU, LAA, SFG, STL, TOR
3rd: ARI, BAL, CIN, CLE, CWS, COL, DET, KCR, MIA, MIL, MIN, OAK, PIT, SEA, TBR, TEX, WSH

293 .369 .414 .783 AFL
I can see us protecting this guy... Tirso Ornelas AA.. hasn't developed his in game power yet.. but he has the BA/OBP hit tool almost figured out... He has improved from yr to yr to yr so I always look at that as a big +..
I've seen reports that say he needs to be protected and others that say he doesnt..

Yeh,
OF: Tatis; Grisham (L); Soto (L) ... Azocar (bench) all 3 slots
INF: Machado; Kim; Cronenworth (L); ... Rosario (bench) all three slots
C/1B/DH: Nola; Campusano; Alfaro
two open slots remain for bench upgrades ... one may be "stronger" as a 1B option. There will be upgrades but until then Dixon and Batten are the incumbents that are on the bubble. Plus with only Soto and Cronenworth productive LHH (Grisham is LHH but not a key to the offense) ... one upgrade at 1B/DH should be a LHH.
Just would not get rid of a hitter or put big money on a hitter since OK with seven of the eight field positions being filled with everyday players that can produce good offense that can carry the 8th / 9th in the line-up. Plus if you believe in Campusano's bat being at least adequate ... really only the 9th bat in question.
