2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on November 11, 2022, 4:46 amLooking at the FA Padres ranking (and estimate contract) is interesting highlighting MLBTR (neutral) perspective vs. my/our biases.
#12 Bell $64MM / 4 yr ($16MM AAV)
#17 Manaea $52MM / 4 years ($13MM AAV)
#33 Profar $20MM / 2 years ($10MM AAV)
#37 Drury $18MM / 2 years ($8MM AAV)
#49 Clevinger $10MM / 1 year ($10MM AAV)
not ranked: Myers (honorable mention) and Martinez (probably had not yet opted out but not even mentioned). No mention of Johnson or Stammen.
_______________
The higher price tag and ranking on Manaea / Clevinger surprised me … but in general the pitching is costing more than I expected. Maybe that supports the price for Suarez who by some considered the second best closer on the market (after Diaz).
With that backdrop … the re-signing of Martinez may be costly (but sounds likely) …

Quote from fenn68 on November 11, 2022, 4:53 amBesides the reported on-going negotiation with Martinez … heard that they are also interested in re-signing Johnson for the pen (like that idea). Missed a lot of last season so should be a low cost option.
Two implications if Johnson signed … strong commitment to Martinez as a SP (initially) and building a solid veteran pen maybe making a trade of a RP more feasible.

Quote from fenn68 on November 11, 2022, 5:02 amIF the Padres go the trade route with a RP and it is Hader as an elite closer … they should get a competitive bid from several teams. No great options on the FA market (Jansen has had his recent problems yet is projected surprisingly large dollars).
MLBTR suggested landing spots for Jansen as TEX, MINN, STL, … so they become trade partners for Hader.
IF the Padres still want to add a legit SP and at least one legit bat … might need to clear some current salaries.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 11, 2022, 5:08 amI can see Senga + Martinez and the Dude from KBO added to the SP staff giving us 6
From position perspective I can see an Abreu + Gallo type add.. not sexy but perhaps the best use of $$
* with maybe a trade or 2 to re-alocate assets...cab see Garcia moved in a smaller trade or Hader in a big one..can also see Morejon + Campusano (with perhaps Zavala or Muzr) in a Bigger trade

Not sure we will spend enough to add 5 more guys.
Senga,Davies and a 1b/DH type I would think would be our limit now barring a Hader trade or another $ saving move.
But,AJ and Seidler have done nothing if not surprise us all constantly so.......who knows really?

Wonder if we could get Verdugo and RP A. Davis from Red Sox for Hader... Verdugo good BA/OBP guy with speed and Davis has a big time arm with sone control problems

Quote from fenn68 on November 11, 2022, 5:45 amLooking at Roster Resource’s estimated CBT payroll for the Padres with Suarez included and adjusting that for an Alfaro non-tender … Padres would be sitting about $12MM under the first CBT threshold.
Since it appears that re-signing Martinez is likely … I will guess around $10MM AAV as the #4 SP … after looking at MLBTR estimates on their ranked SP …. Under CBT would be minimal.
IF the Padres want to add another SP and at least legit ML bat … that would be a plus $20-30MM and push level 2 threshold. I am guessing the Padres will not go that route (at the start of the season). If I am reading the tea leaves right … sets up
a. A trade of significant salary and that has to be Hader given the signing of Suarez and the return of Pomeranz … clears enough to make a major signing of a hitter or SP and stay under the CBT and maybe the return supports the other opening at a lower cost than in the FA market.
b. Go with the dominant pen … and gamble on Groome / Morejon / “minor” FA signing for that 5th SP. Trade out of the secondary RP on the roster for low cost upgrade bats plus add some make good FA types at low initial cost (as they did with Mazara and CINN did with Drury). If you buy into the plus impact offensively with the full seasons for Tatis and Soto … maybe those new bats don’t have to be that great.
Padres made the playoffs (and deep) with a less than impressive Manaea, Clevinger for the full season … would Martinez and Groome / Morejon still be an upgrade?
I could see a series of moves that upgrades the team that was in the playoffs and keeps them under the CBT treshold.

Not unless the Sox expect to compete for the Playoffs in 23' and depending on who they keep (Bogaerts/Devers etc) IMO they are more likely to finish last in that Division next season so I wouldn't think they'd be in on Hader.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 11, 2022, 5:50 amJust for Fun (if we did nothing else)
#4 SP Groome
#5 SP Avila
Obviously we will upgrade...
1B Crone
2B Tatis (Rosario for 1st 20)
SS Kim -
3B Machado
C Nola
DH Campusano
LF Dixon
CF Grisham
RF Soto
Position wise seems like we are in a better place vs SP.. with LF/DH (or 1B if Tatis plays OF) as the "upgradable" spots
Most tradeable choice is Cronenworth maybe Grish depending on how FA goes and what his value is to a desperate for CF help team out there..

If we don't land Senga I wonder if Martinez/DAVIES might be the way to go?
Davies is a innings eating #5 that should be at least better(more consistent) than Manaea was and I don't think he's going to break the bank.
Or,if we sign Senga than forego Martinez and also sign Davies OR run with the in house options as the #5.
