2023 offseason
Quote from rocketpig on November 3, 2022, 7:19 amHas there been any discussion from ownership or the front office about 2023 payroll? Some important players are coming off the books and I'm wondering if they're going to use that as a reason to pare back spending a little.

Just general talk .."we will do anything to win" type speech no specifics on $$ figures..

That's kind of what I figured given how the offseason hasn't really even begun yet. I guess we'll learn a lot more over the next six weeks or so.

Seidler has been quoted recently saying its just money, and you cant take it with you. I think he sees 2023 as a pivotal year. Last year of Darvish, Snell, and Machado can opt out after 2023. So I think he "breaks" the bank this offseason to give Preller and Melvin any piece they need, and pushes all in this offseason. Then depending on the 2023 outcome, you could see either a retool or some drastic changes.

My ideal scene.. has us +$40 mil from where we at .. through trades and FA signings..not necessarily major trades but perhaps a piece we need for a piece someone else needs..think like BP arm or 2 for a 5th SP type or a platoon player with great #'s vs opposite hand Pitchers..
Then (pray Othani is an expiring Deadline rental LAA) take on the near $15mil for Othani (even if it's Merrill + for 2 months).. and make a super serious effort at the whole enchilada....
With Othani.and Manny expiring ..But also Pomz (if not traded) + Hader + Snell + Yu ..etc.. dropping off ($61mil just these 4 roughly).. Padres can decide if keeping 1 or both along with Tatis and Soto for 2024 and beyond is the way to go at that point or maybe trading Soto and keeping both..or maybe other.. But that's a bridge too far into the future with 2023 really the focal point on an all in it to Win it approach...
That being said..AJP can ease some of the SP concerns going into 2023..BUT more importantly 2024..We can't go into 24 with only JOE as 1/5.. so bringing back Martinez and adding a top gun like Rodon or someone like SENGA gives us a little more stability to keeping the team "in it to win it" beyond 23...
We hopefully get 1 or 2 SP ?? Solved from our own System .. our top tier arms are 4 yrs away.. except for Victor (should be in A+) maybe only 2 to 2 1/2 yrs away even at 18yrs of age..A+/AA in 2023..AA/AAA in 2024.. jump to MLB like Peavy in 24 or 25
Some others Groome/Wethers/Avila/Waldon/Wolf/Khner even just one developing into a solid #5 (nothing more) would be a tremendous bonus for the club over the next yr or 2.. I mean Phillie is basically doing what it is doing with only 2 SP and a 3rd Suarez who came out of nowhere.. our P is in a better place than theirs.. so just need +positive contributions from at least ONE guy from our minors in 23/24..

Quote from fenn68 on November 3, 2022, 11:12 amSaw on MLBTR that the Padres are one six teams that were over the CBT threshold last season ... so IF they sign a FA who has a QO attached they will lose their highest 2nd pick and the 5th pick and $1M off their international bonus pool momey.
The consider any player that has turned down a QO will be expensive.
I am sure the "win now" proponents will not see that as a bad price to pay to get "X" but should the Padres be a bit reluctant to go down that road. Their farm system ... after cleaning house at last year's trade deadline ... has no depth. Their payroll will be over the 2023 threshold no matter who they sign (and if they want to contend in 2024 ... over again). Siedler has said he wants to be a continuing contender ... and that will not happen without a strong farm system to support the ML team or use as trade chips.
Padres are already near the point where keeping a contender is only via FA signings ... not a sustainable strategy to fill an ongoing 26 man roster.

Senga looks better and better now
Do guys that opt out like Rodon get a QO or NO?
I don't see anyone but the SS, Nimmo and Judge getting a QO.. as far as Bats
SP wise Kerhaw..Verlander.. DeGroom for sure ..we aint going after them.. Rodon? (See above) .. dont see anyone else getting one.. maybe Edwin Diaz..

If SF wants they can make the QO to Rodon.
Some thought that Bassett and Eovoldi may also get QO along with DeGrom and Diaz.

Quote from WindsorUK on November 3, 2022, 1:33 pmInteresting to read that AJ doesn't plan on making an offer to Soto this off season.
Not that Boras would accept any deals 3 years out but AJ REALLY needs to see Juan put together a good season in Petco. Minimum numbers like Tatis and Machado if he expects to get their kind of money.
