We will all have a better idea on the baseline amount for both 2023 payroll and the 2023 CBT payroll in about 2 weeks. Then we still don't know the spending strategy of Siedler.

The $187MM from Acee (MLBTR) looks to be the 2023 payroll for guaranteed contracts / arb decisions ... but not the same as the CBT payroll calculation. Believe that does include opt ins (which are guaranteed until the opt outs).

Probably should just shelve this circular discussion (since we clearly know little) and wait for the decisions on options to kick in a few days after the WS.

FA starts Sunday..

Had a thought... Verlander on a 1 yr deal ?..Senga + Verlander offseason... I know he is 0-6 6.07 in WS.. but dude has been nails in CS and DS series and reg season.. so ??? maybe just an outlier.. or puts too much pressure on self in WS.. being #1.. #1ets get there #2 if we do we pitch Yu 1st and Justin 2nd maybe it's as simple as that to get his mindset right

Yes please

To be 💯.. he is my #1 offseason priority..

We have a spot for this dude..Phillies do not.. DH/LF/RF are heavily $$$ invested in .. we could use him in LF or DH...  his skill set fits us like a glove

Campy is ready.. Lets Go!

Lots of dudes on here we can fill our holes with..

Put this into the interesting category ... but Roster Resource lays out an opening day roster for the Padres assumption with all the opt outs opting out, Adams on the IL (surgery Aug, 2022), and Tatis suspended (until April 20).

Starting line-up:

SS Kim

RF Soto

3B Machado

1B Cronenworth

DH Alfaro

CF Grisham

C Nola

LF Kohlway (currently non-roster)

2B Rosario

Bench: Campusano; Batten; Dixon; Azocar ... Minors: Sullivan ... Clearly not going to end up that way BUT an interesting look at a do nothing scenario.

SP: Darvish; Snell; Musgrove; Groome; Morejon

RP: Hader; Garcia; Pomeranz; Wilson; Hill; Crismatt; Castillo; Knehr

Minors: Weathers; Contreras; Baez; Kerr; Felipe

The numbers side of me just can't follow my own recommendation to let the dust settle on payroll ... so disectected the Roster Resouce projected payroll for 2023 salaries and for 2023 CBT calculation purposes.

  1. The $187MM they have for 2023 payroll is for the 17 players under a guaranteed contract or arbitration eligible and excludes Myers, Profar, Suarez, and Martinez. Unaccounted for are the 9 additional 26 man roster needs (at least at league minimum) and the 40 man players in the minors.
  2. The $213MM they have for CBT purposes has the same four excluded but includes all the other adds required in the CBT calculation and is based on AAV not 2023 payroll.

AAV for Profar, Suarez, and Martinez totals about $19MM ... so if they opt-in ... Padres are at $232MM or $1MM under the threshold. If they opt out, take that (less the buyouts) and can use that for FA but also have to replace their production just to stay in the same place.

Seems to me that given the FA departing ... the only way to stay in the same place (recognizing Tatis should be one plus) is for the Padres to spend over the threshold ... back to the only real question is "how much"?

For your amusement ... using the same Roster Resource logic ... the LAD projections for both 2023 payroll and 2023 CBT land about $20MM LOWER than the Padres!

What we Know

SS - Kim

2B - Crone

3B- Machado

RF - Soto

Post 4/20 Tatis plays CF/1B/SS/RF or LF while DHing on occasion..(not all just one/maybe 2 of those positions)

That leaves ? At 4 positions

CF- Will Grish come back? Is he a trade candidate (Marlins) for a SP like Lopez? Or is Tatis the CFer after 4/20.. in which case Azocar starts 1st 20 games there and serves as a Def replacement/4th OF after.. Do we have anyone in AA/AAA that can play near GG defense and give us .184 BA? Well believe it or not "We Do" ..his name is Howell..blessed with world class speed and excellent defense Mr Howell cam replace Grishams D if needed..could also be a 40SB + guy (big bases..2 moves to 1st rules changes) makes his style of play a must for every team to have 1 or 2 such players..just thinking out loud here..but Grish value (if possible after 2022) is pretty high with WC/NLDS run and GG nomination..Lopez would also address a 1/5 SP issue..

1B- this can go 101 directions Tatis/Crone could easily end up here.. Drury/Bell/Wil could 1 or all be back.. Dixon/Kohlwey/Martin could all be internal AAA options..FA could present big upgrade I. Rizzo or Abreu..and there is always the trade market and the secondary non-temder FA/Trade market that can develop Voit/Tellez etc..

C- besides CF no other position is as upgradeable as C ..Nola will be a key at C but likely a 2nd C and not the primary figure..Campy can build huge value in Winter ball for a trade (or for a chance to split time with Nola here)..Alfaro is a non tender option and likely not back.. Minors offer no one close to ready.. FA has a few guys at different price points from very expensive Contreras..to somewhat costly Vazques.. to cheaper alternatives.. the trade market could be great for C.. Murphy/Stephenson and/or one of Kirk/Jansen could be in play this offseason..

LF- lots of options here including Profar back (with Boras as his Agent and a very good WAR 2022 I highly doubt it).. so Joc/Benintendi/Peralta/Comforto all of the sudden look appealing at or near what profar made or is in line to make in FA..love Profar but with even the extreme platoon splits of Joc adnd Peralta ..all 4 of these dudes would be a pretty good upgrade over Profar at the Plate..Obviously others are there as well..as is the chance Trent stays and Tatis is in RF or LF with Soto in the other corner..

DH is basically whomever is left to play it..with Voit coming back a #Cultgavorite move or a discounted JD Martinez brought in on a cheapish 1 or 2 yr deal..

1B will be Bell. Just have a feeling that Preller/Seidler likes who the guy is, and clubhouse seems to like him, and besides Rizzo (who will resign with NYY), Bell is probably the best option for SD. Even over Drury who will get an overinflated contract due to his numbers in CIN.

2B will be Crone. SS will be Kim. 3B will be Machado. LF will be Tatis. (Dark horse candidate will be FA sign of Conforto). CF will be Grisham. (Unless they sign Conforto, then Tatis to CF, and Grisham is bench). RF will be Soto. DH will be Nelson Cruz. (Preller still has a man crush. He will be Tatis "mentor/babysitter").

They may look into upgrading C, not sure who they look to, maybe Barnhart is a cheaper, LHH option to Alfaro.

Myers resigns as RHH bench help for LF and an occasional day off for Bell at 1B. Bell will be at 1B for 140 games if as long as he stays healthy.

Tatis, Soto, Machado, Bell, Cruz, Crone, Kim, Nola/Barnhart, Grisham if no Conforto.

Tatis, Soto, Machado, Bell, Cruz, Conforto, Kim, Crone, Nola/Barnhart if they sign Conforto. I would be comfortable subbing Pederson for Conforto.
