Put this into the interesting category ... but Roster Resource lays out an opening day roster for the Padres assumption with all the opt outs opting out, Adams on the IL (surgery Aug, 2022), and Tatis suspended (until April 20).

Starting line-up:

SS Kim

RF Soto

3B Machado

1B Cronenworth

DH Alfaro

CF Grisham

C Nola

LF Kohlway (currently non-roster)

2B Rosario

Bench: Campusano; Batten; Dixon; Azocar ... Minors: Sullivan ... Clearly not going to end up that way BUT an interesting look at a do nothing scenario.

SP: Darvish; Snell; Musgrove; Groome; Morejon

RP: Hader; Garcia; Pomeranz; Wilson; Hill; Crismatt; Castillo; Knehr

Minors: Weathers; Contreras; Baez; Kerr; Felipe

Basically Roster Resource is projecting no FA signings or trades for SD. Which we know will not happen. Seen too many times that Preller can not stand pat. There will be roster change in the offseason.

DH is basically whomever is left to play it..with Voit coming back a #Cultgavorite move or a discounted JD Martinez brought in on a cheapish 1 or 2 yr deal..

Preller has too big a man crush on Nelson Cruz, he will be the DH over those two if Preller has anything to say about it.

Yeah he does... he is too old man.. But if the price is right??

234 .313 .337 .651

Azocar can hit better than that ..so can Dixon (career on 500+ ABs close to 700 OPS)

Nellie does have some leadership qualities and wisdom.. But?? The Bat screams rebuilding club..not WS seeking club

Does a Grishman + Campusano trade to the Fish for Lopez + Berti make sense for both clubs?? If the plan is Tatis in CF??

Your looking only at 2022 numbers, and even with those numbers, still hit 10 HRs and drove in 64 RBIs, which are more RBIs than Voits time in SD.

Plus he just had eye surgery to fix the issues that he had last season. So IF he bounces back to his career numbers, Azocar or Dixon will never touch the numbers for his career. Its a bet that I think Preller makes, especially with his leadership qualities and wisdom.

SD might have to add another lower level prospect or two. Or maybe Weathers, Grisham, and Campusano for Lopez and Berti.

Berti would look nice at the top of the line up with that base stealing ability. With the new rules/pitch clock, he could steal 60+ bases in 2023. He is probably best at 2B, so do you slide Crone to 1B, and then chase Conforto/Pederson and platoon with Myers in LF?

Not sure that is the best answer. Would SD be better off with Tatis in LF, and Grisham in CF, and hope that Grishams bat bounces back to the .240 BA range??

Not for MIA. No way they give up Lopez ... one of the best pitchers last season for that little. They have a CF that already hits better than Grisham (and not bad defensively) and Stallings is a good catcher plus their #1 pick last year is their future catcher. Campusano can't even break into a Padre catching line-up that many already want to upgrade from Nola.

Side: not sure why any team would give up much to add Grisham ... maybe would take him but not give much in return. Can try to sell Gold Glove as much as they can but there are a lot of quality defensive CF who can at least hit the Mendoza line. MIA is a team that needs offense ... Grisham is not that guy nor is Campusano.

BTV takes that trade and says "you have to be joking, right?" It shows Lopez and Berti having just over TRIPLE the value of Grisham, Campusano and Weathers combined. We don't have the prospect value to trade for a bag of peanuts anymore.

Getting the sense that Alfaro is ticketed out given his projected arb salary and poor performance in the second half and Campusano will remain and slide into the second catcher slot (at league minimum cost). Padres like Nola's handling of the staff (and he is low cost / controllable). That combo frees up money for more critical FA signings ... SP and a couple of hitters.

Most worried about SP ... for quality don't see what the Padres could trade that could (and would) be outbid by other teams since almost every team wants SP. If the Padres see themselves as a contender need more (better) depth behind Darvish, Snell, and Musgrove. Can hope and pray on Groome (only limited AAA time) or Morejon (has not been a full season starter ever) ... but hope and prayer are not a good strategy. Add that after those two ... into the lottery type gambles. Since virtually no team makes it through the season with only five SP ... one injury (or just poor performance) sends the team out of the playoffs as the go to the reserves. Remember the Padres did not make the playoffs by that much and even with the issues with Clevinger / Manaea they had their plus moments leading to wins ... and yes, Groome and Morejon can be worse.

So, think they can marshall enough offensive support without a major signing ... therefore the first move(s) and money commitment should be SP (reliable veteran of quality ... not an injury risk ... but at least mid to upper rotation quality). Would stay away for both Clevinger (injury history) and Manaea (just ineffective at his price).
