Tatis has the speed.. height..athleticism ..and baseball IQ to not only play CF ..But be one of the best CFers in the History of the game.. his height/vertical jump combo is at least +16" vs Grish. His speed and range should be way better as well a diving catch for Grish should be an easy full sprint catch for Tatis... he just needs reps reading the ball off the bats.. having SS as a background on that fast 1st step should equate to Tatis being at least avg to avg + through a full season there.. Before being a GG CFer for the next decade..
Tatis has the height/size/speed to play any position. The problem is that he is always injured and hasn't made much of an effort or looked good in the OF. He has the tools to be one of the best SS in history too, but he hasn't been. He is a titanic bat with all the athleticism in the world who gets hurt getting out of bed in the morning. Put him in RF and forbid him from ever diving or even going near or touching the OF wall. It's nice to dream, but reality has shown us that Tatis on defense is nothing but a danger to the Padres. We already have a GG CF. I don't see us trading or moving Grisham. FAR too much risk.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 28, 2022, 2:13 pmQuote from MrPadre19 on October 28, 2022, 1:41 pmWould think they’d trade the older Jansen unless overwhelmed by the package….and we could only overwhelm them with Merrill…and that ain’t happening.
I’d prefer we spend whatever money/assets we have to get another TOR Starter.
Whether it’s Senga or a free agent or a trade with Miami or something else?
This year proved when you reach the playoffs the team with the deepest rotation has the advantage.
Plus after next year we’re going to be looking for Starters anyway.
Theyvm are not looking for prospects.. they are looking for MLB pieces according to the report..Merrill has next to zero value for them.. they want Groome/Wethers/Grishman/Rosario/Crone/Snell /BP arms.. sone 2 or 3 combo of that..
Jansen probably doesn't net them that MLB starter or 2 they are seeking.. to he fair I think Grish + Snell + Pomz and Garcia gets us Kirk.. might need to pull Pomz ($11mil) and replace him with Rosario if Toronto doesn't want to gamble the $11mil on Pomz being back to 100% dominance out of the BP..
Grish again I am only throwing his name here cause we are getting Kirk.. there is a huge VOID of CF in the league and a GG with 20HR power who should benefit +30 to 50 points in BA and become a 3+ WAR CFer *with shift ended .. and a more brisk game... and only if AJP has at least an alternative Def option for Tstis in later innings..otherwise keep Grish and ride...
But yeah if we went after a C like Murphy (A's) or Stephenson (Reds) then yeah Merrill likely the piece the trade centers around...not for Kirk

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 28, 2022, 2:22 pmWhile we are talking Blue Jays
Ross Stripling SP + Senga SP (JPN) would be a nice duo to add to our arsenal.. while Stripling 10-4 3.01 ERA had great #s the fact that he is more of a 5 IP starter (#5) and maybe 120 IP guy.. should keep his cost on the lowish end.. of the SP spectrum and Senga (#4) unknown MLB success will also be on the mid $$ money spectrum...we might be able to sign both for less $$ than say Carlos Rodon will get by himself.. or slightly more..a combo of Martinez/Stripling/and rookie Groome for #5/#6 + Martinez (22 role).. would be nice depth.. and very solid way to keep Yu/Snell/Musgrove/Senga fresh like in 2022..BUT with > SP depth and arms vs 22 in 2023

Quote from Jeremy Hill on October 28, 2022, 3:28 pmI've had the Kirk trade thought too, but I think it's unlikely. Upgrading at C would be a luxury move for the Padres. We have more pressing needs. The Blue Jays aren't going to trade him for our second tier prospects and scrubs. He's just shy of his 24th birthday, coming off an all-star season and controllable through 2026. The Blue Jays are in win now mode. They're going to be looking for high quality major league ready talent in return. Our system has very little of that. The only way I think it works would be with a package built around Cronenworth. He's got the same amount of control and the Blue Jays have been looking for a left-handed bat. Maybe you could try to package Cronenworth and Pomeranz for Kirk and Hernandez or Gurriel.
As for Tatis I think his fate will be tied to how our off-season and early season play out. I could see him ending up back at SS or anywhere in the outfield depending on how things go.
Edit- Jake has 1 less year of control than Kirk.

Quote from fenn68 on October 28, 2022, 5:44 pmToronto finished the season in the playoffs with more wins than the Padres with Kirk as their primary catcher. Kirk is only 23 ... at league minimum ... 5 control years ... and by fWAR 3.8 putting him in as a top 10 catcher last season. None of the Padres' castoffs (ML or MiL) even start a conversation on Kirk or any of their other mainstream players. Also they are set to have a pretty big payroll as it is ... so assuming any from the Padres for the likes of Pomeranz (who may never pitch effectively again and only one year control) or Snell with only one year control just makes no sense for Toronto.
As for the trade value of the "prospects" ... near zero for the likes of Weathers, Rosario, Knehr and the AA/AAA non roster types who will help no one in 2023 (if ever). Groome maybe gets a strong bench player but not a regular (that is any good) for 2023. Bundle the discards ... as many as you want ... and still will not get a major add to the Padres (unless they are underperforming and over priced on a non-contender.
Can't really trade a regular position player while looking to add to fill holes already. Can't really trade a SP/RP given the departures of nearly half the staff if Suarez / Martinez opt out.
Basically the Padres have no real options except for signing FA or trading Merrill and maybe some of the higher profile rookie ball / recent drafted players.

Just STOP....The Padres are not going to trade a Starting Pitcher for one of your man crush guys....Geez
The way you're going I'm going to have to get a bigger road map because you are all over the place and enough of your 3-4 for 1 player nonsense.

You have no idea how and why playing center field is so much different than playing a corner or how to teach any of the positions so just stop it

”If” Tatis is to be our SS.
But even then I just don’t see AJ trading him for all the reasons you’re thinking of.

Yeah, CF is MUCH more difficult than either corner- probably why there is so few good ones.
Now what's the deal with Soto? He looked as bad as FTJ did last year! Was he a LF in Washington? And if he was, why in the hell did they move him???? Not like we have a superstar in LF( I'm sure Profar would have happily moved to RF)
This organisation has a real bad habit of moving position players at the major league level. Wouldn't it be beneficial to see if these kids can actually play different positions before thrusting them out there under the bright lights and big crowds of MLB? Gotta be tough enough to perform on that stage when you're actually comfortable with where you're playing.
Square peg, round hole comes to mind.....
