2023 offseason

Reading some of Seidler's comments the last few days it certainly sounds like he's ready to open his wallet even further. It still feels weird seeing us spend with the big boys after the 30-40m rosters of my youth.

I'd rather see them go after Joc Pederson and pair him up with a lefty killer like Myers than sign Benintendi.

Yeah me too.. Tatis/Soto/Machado/Joc is some kind of nice 1-4.. But I prefer Drury vs Myers at 1B . While Myers is >Defensively..Drury's Bat is more consistent (and >vs lefties) Now if lets say we sign Joc + Bell then yeah Wil as a vs lefty platoon at 1B and rotational guy..1B Wil/DH Bell vs lefties.. 1B Bell/DH Joc vs RHP would be phenomenal

Jose Pirela (Samsung Lions): (141 games) .342/.411/.565, 28 HR, 55 BB, 81 K, 15 SB.

Pirela suited up for the Yankees, Padres and Phillies in the majors between 2014-19, before making the switch to Japan. After one year with the Hiroshima Carp, he moved to Korea to join the Lions. While Pirela posted strong numbers in his first year, he’s become one of the KBO’s most feared hitters in 2022. The 32-year-old finished second in home runs, hits, average and OBP all while striking out just 12.9% of the time. It was a sizable jump from 2021, when he hit .284/.357/.490 with 28 home runs. While a small dip in strikeouts would’ve helped, he was certainly boosted by a .361 BABIP in 2022, almost 70 points higher than the previous season. Nonetheless, it’ll be interesting to see if Pirela garners any MLB attention this winter on the back of an MVP-level year in Korea.

Maybe a solid 3/9mil ($3per) type "jack of all trades" type bench piece (or more) Pirela sort of a Profar type with exp at 1B/2B/3B/OF...can see Profar opt out and Pirela coming on.. I mean we've had good luck with one KBO MVP type.. and unlike Kim..Pirela is already comfortable with MLB/SDP experience... If Tatis/Grish/Soto is starting 3 .. there is no reason for $10+mil Profar (assuming he opts out) to be on the bench.. when a guy like Pirela can play that role

I know, even 3 years ago we would never have thought SD would be worried about spending penalties and losing draft position. Yet here we are.

On that note. As Fenn and I have guestimated SD will be right up against the CBT mark of $233M if no one opts out. So if I understand the penalty portion of the CBA correctly, we will pay a 30% penalty on the first $20M above $233, and an additional 12% on top of that for the next $20M. So IF SD was to add up to $40M in payroll this offseason, with penalties that $40M is really like $25.5± in true salary. So I would say if no one opts out, we have about $26.25M to spend this offseason on two SP and a 1B.

Oh, and by the way, Myers is not really a lefty killer. For his career, he is really pretty even between RHP and LHP for his career. Although this year, he was a lot better against LHP.

And if we resign Bell, you do not want to DH him that often. His numbers as a DH are atrocious. IF we resign Bell, he is the 1B.

As Henry mentioned, maybe TOR is willing to move Kirk for the right pieces. Today from MLBTR But, moving Kirk or Jansen could land the Blue Jays a controllable starting pitcher, or an everyday second baseman, or perhaps an outfielder to play center field or one of the corners.

So could we entice TOR with a combo of Rosario and Weathers or Groome? Might have to add in a couple of other lower level pieces as well. Or does SD offer Grisham, Rosario, and Weathers for Kirk? We could then resign Bell 1B and Myers LF, sign Pederson LF, put Tatis in CF, and Soto in RF and have Azocar as the OF back up.

Tatis, Soto, Machado, Bell, Kirk, Crone, Myers/Pederson, Kim and then decide how to use the DH, days off or a real DH based on how money is spent.

Fk I would trade Wethers + Knher + Garcia (if Suarez returns) + Grrish (even if is a 3 way to Marlins)+ try to unload Pomz on Toronto for Kirk.. if I can help it I'd like to keep Groome..but not opposed to sending him if he is a "must" KiRK is like my favorite C in baseball ..dude can stand behind the plate and offer a low target...and he is built like a FAT Kruk.. 5-6 265lbs.. dude hits like Gwynn too hardly strikes out and goes oppo all the time..a tireless worker on his hitting...and the Hometown flavor of being a Tijuana Boy is HUGE..

Going to throw it out there ..If Snellzila is not a resign after 2023 guy.. could Snell + Wethers to TOR for Kirk be a thing?

Would probably need to extend Yu.. and Sign SENGA ..and maybe a Davies type ..while retaining Martinez for me to feel right about sending Snell out of town..But???

Also if we were able to move Snell and Pomz to Toronto ++

And land Rodon + Senga for about $10million more (Net) while securing at least a Rodon/Senga/Musgrove 1 2 3 beyond 2023.. our SP would be at least more manageable from an add/subtract basis.. and Kirk is under Control til 2027.. Now bare in mind he is an 80-100 game C and really good DH the rest of the time..so Nola would still C close to 50% of the time.. Kirk's bat plays very well in the #5 spot

  • 285 .372 .415 .786.. 126 OPS+... and the best stat line 63 BB 58 SO.. Dude is a perfect "old school" bat that would thrive at Petco with his approach (Kirk)
  • Shit I may even bat him #2 with that OBP.. Tatis/Kirk/Soto/Manny/Bell/Crone.. 1 to 6.. would be 🔥
