2023 offseason
Quote from WindsorUK on October 27, 2022, 10:02 amTop FA'S this year are SS.
Any chance that a team that misses out looks to SD for a swap of Kim?
Could he bring back a 4/5 type starter, close to the bigs( AA/AAA)?
Eguy holds down SS until FTJ returns?
Just thinking outside the box.....

Quote from BoosterSD on October 27, 2022, 10:05 amI know that in division trades are difficult, and not even sure if this would be a good idea. AZ would love to offload the MadBum contract, and he has 2 years and $37M coming. AZ is also loaded with young talented OFers, two of which are LHH high OBP lead off types. Either McCarthy or Thomas will be on the outside looking in for the 2023 season and beyond, especially with AZ drafting Jones. McCarthy seems to be the better base stealer, so he would be my choice. AZ seems to need BP help, a less expensive C, and getting rid of MadBum.
AZ gets Nola, and 2 RHRP. SD gets C Kelly and OF McCarthy. MadBum along with $18.5M to offset his salary. We can then flip Grisham to the Fish for something, and Campusano becomes trade bait since Kelly is under control through 2024. And SD has an inexpensive lead off hitter in McCarthy. You could exchange Campusano for Nola, and that would be fine. Then SD hopes that getting out of the homer dome in AZ, and Niebla can make MadBum decent.
McCarthy, Tatis, Soto, Machado, Bell, Nelson Cruz-DH, Crone, Kelly, Kim.

Renfroe/Soto/Tatis could split LF/RF/DH duties.. and could on occasion lineup left to right with Tatis in CF..
Like the idea of Renfroe patrolling LF in Petco again. As you say, he seems extremely comfortable out there...and at the plate( OBP be damned!)

I definitely think that there would a lot of interest in Kim, especially after performing well in the playoffs, and in the NYM series, Eduardo Perez was drooling all over his abilities at SS. With his low contract, I would expect that we could get 2-3 pieces back for him. And then Tatis could stroll back into SS, like nothing ever happened.
However, I would be concerned with the clubhouse's thoughts on getting rid of Kim after a nice run into the playoffs with him at SS. And then we still need another bat. So unless we got a 1B and a SP out of the deal, which we might, then are we really better off trading Kim and his relatively low salary of $7M? I am sure that Preller will at least go down that rabbit hole with a couple of teams. MIN comes to mind quickly if they lose out on Correa.

I always liked his power, and still has a great arm. And if you are not counting on him in the 3-5 spots, you can live with that power/strike outs at like the 6 or 7 spot in the line up.
Is Preller willing to swallow pride and bring back a guy that he traded?

Kim is like a GLUE guy.. moving him "Destroys Manny's heart" and thus the team.. I cant see that happening ..not after how Kim performed and became a cult hero of sorts not just with the fans but in the clubhouse

we have 3 catchers right now depending on Alfaro.....Nola was a Shortstop in college and the minors so he has obvious glove skills....let him play 1B and keep Alfaro and Campusano and put the saved money into a SP
Like I said....crazy thought
Nola's bat at 1b would be so ugly. A 4 HR/40 RBI guy at 1B would be such a waste of a slugging/RBI position.
Lake Elsinore 1B and 8th Rd pick (2022) Griffin Doersching would do > Nola at 1B .. come on now... really want thus dude to move up quickly he is like Soto's age already (5yr College) ..so A+ and quick promo to AA if he rakes early/often... One thing with Doersching his power is 80 grade and has more 500 ft shots than most.. very Schwarber like .. if he can fine tune the rest of his plate/pitch awareness I look for his bat in SD circa 2024-25

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 27, 2022, 11:06 amWe don't want wholesale changes (look at Nats) they ran out 80% of their lineup from prior yr 3 or 4 times before getting it right...amazing that Harper wasn't part of the final body of work...
I think our Core.. to go all the way has to be Tatis/Manny/Soto/Kim/Crone... leaves 1 OF .. 1B/DH and C as the areas where improvement could be greatest.. AND no not all 4 need to be changed in one offseason..AND no not all 4 need to be different for us to win it all... Nola is very close to being part of the formula (maybe not even as a starting C..but definetely as one of the 2 catchers maybe a 40% (backup C) type.. The lead C can be more like a Contreras/Vazquez (both FA).. or a big trade guy like Murphy (best)/Stephenson (versatility> 2nd best) or Jansen (an upgrade with more 50/50 with Nola type expected contribution)... in an ideal world Jays keep Jansen and trade Tijuana Boy Alejandro Kirk to us.. Talk about a local kid coming (4000 miles away) coming Home.. and did I mention he is good.. with Jays looking to compete we could entice them to take a trio of BP arms ++ easing the prospect capital a bit

Quote from BoosterSD on October 27, 2022, 11:57 amI love LHH catchers, and 27/28 year old Jose Godoy according to MLBTR has just become a MiL FA. His AAA are decent, with a .271 BA & .351 OBP. Not much power, and has only had 62 ABs in the ML where he has not shown well. If he is a MiL FA, I would like to sign him, and see what he can do in ST. If he can hit, a LHH is always a valuable commodity.

Kim did look good in NY but not so much afterwards. 6 for 35, 2 walks, 3 RBI, 4 runs( in comparison, Grisham was 4 for 36, 2 walks,2 RBI, 3 runs).
If moving his $7 million helps bring in another front line pitcher, certainly be worth the swap.
