2023 offseason
Quote from MrPadre19 on October 26, 2022, 3:29 pmGetting caught up….reading the last 5-6 pages (whew).
A few thoughts.
If Tatis plays the OF IMO it has to be RF with Soto in LF.
While has has the athleticism for CF we saw what happens to even a Gold Glover when their first step is wrong…Playing everyday there with almost zero experience I would think this would be an issue for Tatis all season long. Also, his arm is best suited for RF.We have 3 guys (4 really counting Profar) who we “could” resign who all could play 1b.I’m guessing we do sign at least one of Bell/Drury/Myers/Profar.
We can’t afford to have Profar in LF and Crone at 1b….Those are high Slug positions and neither of them would be.
Lastly,if we can’t find a high OBP addition at a position of need to lead off I suspect it would be Soto.
Either way….Soto “has”,to hit ahead of both Tatis and Machado.
NO ONE gets on base more than he does and many of Tatis/Machados solo HR’s would then be 2 run bombs.
My guess…we re-sign Myers at a reasonable cost to play 1b(hoping for a healthy full season rebound)and Bell or Drury to DH.Then concentrate on the rotation.
LF Soto
RF Tatis
3B Machado
DH Bell/Drury
1B Myers
2B Crone
SS Kim
C Nola
CF Grisham

we have 3 catchers right now depending on Alfaro.....Nola was a Shortstop in college and the minors so he has obvious glove skills....let him play 1B and keep Alfaro and Campusano and put the saved money into a SP
Like I said....crazy thought

Would open a great debate at he end of 2023 … re-sign Machado OR sign Otani OR extend Soto … all with mega AAVs so not likely all them and probably only one.
All depends on the season Soto has in 2023. If he rebounds, at hits his normal .287/.424/.526 with 30 HRs and his age, IMO its a no brainer for Soto, Ohtani, then Machado. Soto is the youngest, Ohtani P and hits, Manny would be 31 and starting the decline soon.
If Soto does not come near his normal numbers, then I lean Ohtani, Machado, Soto.
Another thing to think about is how bare the upper levels of our minor leagues are now. After trading Hassell and Wood, we have no high quality OF anywhere close to the majors. We also don't have any high quality starting pitchers anywhere close, which makes both of those positions more important in my mind. Therefore I lean more to Soto(personal preference) or Ohtani. Manny can be replaced by our current top prospect Merrill. We would only have to get maybe a 1 or 2 year rental until he is ready.
Ornelas /Howell/Batten/Luzardo/Dixon are all ready/near ready OF.. NO none would start over Soto/Fernando or Grish.. most are bench types.. Woods was 3-4 yrs away and Hassell 2-3yrs away... in that time frame we will have Zavala (who might be > than both) ready... there were a ton of bats at LE this yr some graduated to FtWayne some will this season.. led by Merrill.. The position I am really excited about is C with King Jr (draft 2022) ticketed for LE in 2023 and Ethan Salas (#1 overall international prospect in the world) expected to sign with Padres in January.and likely ticketed for the Dominican League..it will be a while but these kids are going to be fantastic backstops in due time..
I think the PLAN is to keep Soto/FTJ and Machado together for a long time.. Have 2 or 3 complementary pieces around them...and 3-4 season to season rotational pieces to complete the offense.. and 2 or 3 aTOR type arms.. again supplemented by a couple adds here and there..before turning to a few young arms Lesko/Snelling circa 2026-27.. ro complement the top guns in SD by that time..
BP has the makings of a dominant unit with 20 or so arms climbing the ladder behind the MLB unit

Nola could play there in an emergency but his bat is just not enough for a full time position of power/production.

I know that the normal model is to have power bats at the INF/OF corners … but have to deal what what you have to start and make the best add you can …. If the best add is not a power bat (eg. Major OBP, speed, defense) have to go with that over a slug who only has one skill hitting for power and striking out a ton. Need to be flexible to build the most productive team and a lot of graduations (and different values) among a 35HR one dimensional guy vs a 25HR with a better all around skill set vs a 15 HR guy that a major OB / defensive asset.
With that preamble, Padres have no desirable internal options and the FA market is limited … would not focus on only the power profile.

Agree...but Nola is none of those things

Yeah.. I mean when u have Soto/Manny and FTJ... position/power stuff goes out the window.. I would like to see a Benintendi/or better (Xander) type high BA/OBP type brought in .. as I think our lineup is better with Tatis/Soto/Manny (not necessarily in that order) batting 2 3 4... But 1 needs to be > and more consistent than Profar/Kim (both of whom are fine at 789 spots)
Lets say we resign Bell and trade for C Murphy.. (we lose Profar)
1. Tatis RF/LF
2. Soto LF/RF
3. Manny 3B
4. Bell 1B/DH
5. Murphy C/DH
6. Crone 2B
7. Dixon DH/1B/3B/COF
8. Grish CF
9. Kim SS
Would be a terrific lineup and much improved..obviously depending on what Dixon does or does not do...his position DH (40% of the time) ..Murphy/Bell (60%).. becomes the most upgradable at Deadline *where Othani could be the "rental" we could add to improve SP and DH.. with his hit tool profile Othani could hit anywhere from 1 to 4... good speed..good OBP ..great power..bumping Dixon to the bench and bumping everyone down the order
$$$ should be spent on SP.. thus the need for Dixon (or someone like him/Rook like Rosario..etc) having one minimum $$ spot..at least for the 1st half..

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 27, 2022, 7:40 amWas just reading Brewers offseason (mlbtraderumors) suggesting Hunter Renfroe (non-tender/trade candidate).. if I remember correctly he murders LHP (aka LAD).. and his Bat plays well at Petco.. he is not an OBP guy.. but our weakness is SLG and we can sacrifice (one) lineup spot to address that weakness without hurting OBP much..balancing our lineup.. Renfroe/Soto/Tatis could split LF/RF/DH duties.. and could on occasion lineup left to right with Tatis in CF..

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 27, 2022, 8:27 amWith Defense a big priority for Padres approach.... is Rizzo at +$4mil per a better investment than Bell?.. takes funds away to address other positions.. so more likely that a rookie/cheap journeyman type FA may have to cover the DH role.. But say is Rizzo 4/72..vs 4/52 for Bell... what direction u go.. consider the consequences.. say Bell = Senga + Drury + Suarez as well.. say Rizzo = Senga + Suarez... ??
Think 2023 may be the most important offseason in Padres History... Manny/Yu/Snell are all potential FA in 2024.. Soto in 2025... we have an owner that is willing to spend..I think Soto gets extended tbh..AJP wants it..Siedler wants it..and with Soto and Tatis locked up for a long time.. this team becomes a yearly presence in the MLB postseason search for a decade..we may not make it every year BUT 100% we won't be rebuilding anything with those 2 as a base yr in and yr out...

Nola's bat at 1b would be so ugly. A 4 HR/40 RBI guy at 1B would be such a waste of a slugging/RBI position.
