Quote from Randy Manese on February 26, 2023, 9:11 amTim Hill makes $1,850,000 but that's not going to be enough and market for him is likely very small. However, if both and he and Garcia (3.75 M) are traded and replaced by Castillo and Wilson or other league minimum. types, then more wiggle room for those incentives to kick in and not affect that second tier luxury tax. If the luxury tax is computed at the end of the regular season, it is possibly that we may have unloaded Pomeranz and/or other bullpen pieces for less costlier but still effective outcomes.

Given the Padres history of keeping everything close to the vest … doubt they are leaking anything except that they are in negotiation. Machado’s agent (or someone in that sphere) could be leaking the low side … not necessarily for this negotiation but to keep a relatonship going with the reporter. Or someone just could be speculating.
Not a worry at this point … Padres just set an initial low offer (and most do in negotiaton) and will go up while Machado’s side stats with the high side to set “limits” … then start moving dollars, years, opt outs, vesting, incentives, “perks” around to reach a settlement. Both sides want negotiation flexibility.
No slam dunk this will get done since Machado (if he has a MVP type season) in this market has a legit case for a 10 year / $350MM deal and that COULD cross the Padre line given the other commitments coupled with an Ohtani run and runs that the Korean / Japanese FA next winter.
Wow Fenn, that was a spot on forecast/prediction on Machado's contract. In the words of Jayce Tingler, "Tip of the Cap to you." Go Pads!

Quote from 3fingersplit on February 26, 2023, 11:03 amI'm glad Fenn was right and as a lifelong Padres fans I'm stoked this possible distraction during the season is over and Manny is going to retire a Padre and hopefully hit the HOF with a Padre Hat. Seidler, Preller and Manny got it done but in my mind the one that made it happen was Manny's wife... she loves San Diego...what's not to love, have more money than they could ever spend, building a home on Coronado which is one of the pricey markets in the nation and you know what they say...Happy Wife, Happy Life.
Thank you Yainee.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on February 26, 2023, 11:31 amI love seeing the fans of other teams that are talking about how we're not going to be so happy watching these guys at the end of their contracts. All I can think about is how I still watched 100+ games when we had a broken down Jason Bartlett and Orlando Hudson as our double play combo.

I think 41 yr old Machado will still be > than our DH (combined #'s for 2022) and we made it to within 3 games of the WS.. a lot better

With the incentives built into the deals for Martinez, Lugo, Carpenter and Wacha it's going to take a pretty big sum. We'll see what happens, but I'm starting to think it's no longer a concern.
I dont think 2023 is a concern.. but I think we can stay under 273.. IF we stand pat at deadline.. lets face it IF Healthy this team has little to no holes and most upgradeable position Catcher is not one you trade for that late in the year... unless there is a SP available like Othani (best) or Sonny Gray (at the bottom of my list) .. dont see us adding another SP that only upgrades our 4th/5th.. Wacha/Martinez/Lugo and Co.. are pretty decent ..and 123 is elite if healthy..

Hector always right
As I reported a few days ago, the #Padres will do everything they can to offer Juan Soto a lucrative contract extension that will be even better than the one they just gave Manny Machado.@z101digital

Roster Resource now has them just over 273 with the Machado deal. That doesn't include any incentives. They aren't getting under without shedding a decent amount.
Martinez
$500,000 each for 10, 15, 20, 25 games started
$100,000 each for 10, 20 relief appearances, $200,000 each for 30, 40, 50, 60 relief appearances
$200,000 each for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 games finished
Lugo
$100,000 each for 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 games as a reliever.
$250,000 each for 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30 starts
Carpenter
