2023 offseason

If Graham's offensive struggles continue and somebody else is playing well when Tatis comes back things could get interesting. If he bounces back with the bat at all the job is his though. Even if he doesn't the glove and power give him a high enough floor that it would take a strong effort for someone to take his spot.

With an offense like the one the Padres are likely to have, hopefully it takes a lot of pressure off of Grisham and can settle his nerves. A really good offense affords the team to be able to take a hit from the centerfield position offensively if it means excellent defense in centerfield. Obviously we all hope to get the grisham pre 2001 injury or even something close to it.

LHP Cole Hamels

RHP Teheran

Nice Veteran Depth at AAA if not more

Having 2 Vets like that around ST and in EP will also help the younger guys

Will they actually play in EP, or do they have opt outs if they do not make the team?

Both signed minor league deals ..with MLB deals in place if they make the 26man roster.. so both would be in El Paso if they don't make the team... sometimes these deals have an opt out of 6/1/23 or 7/1/23.. not sure if these do..

Agree that no matter his offense, Grisham stays in CF for his defense carried by the rest of the team’s offense. No confidence (on a team that wants to contend) in any replacement with Tatis’ injury history and has yet to prove he currently is a capable OF let alone CF … Engel / Dahl past their prime as CF (and probably not better offensively) …. Azocar is “nice” but not better than Grisham.

Grisham is low cost and controlled for 3 years and would be a benefit even if ends up getting moved to 4th OF. If traded, would not get any better help for 2023 when the Padres want to win.

I suspect both have opt outs but guessing Teheran’s would be mid-season … so expect him in AAA. On the other hand, having trouble seeing Hamels accepting assignment to AAA given his age and past history … maybe at most a month like a rehab stint. Could see an opt out at the end of ST (or just an agreement by the Padres that they will release him if not on the 26 man).

In the scenario of all the cards falling in the Padres’ favor with the top 3 healthy and Wacha, Martinez, Lugo, Hamels, Teheran, Morejon, and Groome all lights out in ST … what do the Padres do?

Morejon and Groome to AAA likely but what happens if Hamels and Teheran “earn” the 26 man while Lugo and Martinez have not “lost” their chance. Knowing at some point early in the year Hamels and Teheran will opt out since other teams NEED pitching.

Would that create a move to the pen for someone and trades out of the pen? Can’t trade the FA signs until Jun 15 as I recall. Probably have wiggle room with Teheran but IF Hamels really looks back in form as a SP and the Padres don’t want to lose him … a challenge to add his $2MM vs the tax threshold baring a trade of someone with an equivalent (or greater salary).

Garcia / Pomeranz have the salary to cover out of the pen … Snell out of the SP. Anyone else out of the pen is not doing it (not trading Hader and can’t trade Suarez … yet).

A chance the Preller has a real challenge / opportunity for deals at the end of ST … maybe a RP for an upgraded 13th position player or a decent near term prospect to help in 2024.

MLBTR is reporting that Machado has confirmed to reporters that he WILL opt out of his contract after this season. So there is no doubt now. SD and Machado will need to negotiate a new contract or risk him leaving at the end of the season.

I still think a new contract gets done this spring, maybe even prior to him leaving for the WBC.

It also appears that he wants a 10-12 year deal. Probably leaning towards the 11 years given to Turner and Bogearts.

So maybe a 11 year $341M deal, for a $31M AAV gets it done. Or maybe, 12 years for $348M, but lowers the AAV to $29M, giving SD a touch more CBT space. They could do the same, and rip up the final year of this contract, like with Darvish, and go 12 for $348M, and save SD about $1M this season, which could cover most of Hamels, should he make the team.
