6 SP: Darvish; Musgrove; Snell (L); Wacha; Martinez; Lugo
3 LHRP: Hader (L); Pomeranz (L); Hill (L);
3 RHRP: Suarez; Garcia; Wilson;
1 long relief: Morejon (L) to flip the other team coming in for Lugo, Martinez, Wacha as needed. Or even Darvish / Musgrove … a RH oriented SP staff.
That should put Honeywell, Crismatt, and Lopez on the bubble for a roster move. All the others get optioned.
One note of my base case 13 … only Wilson and Morejon are potential realistic option candidates.
I don't think Crismatt makes it to the end of ST without being traded..unless AJP moves Luis Garcia ($3.5) instead
Both Wilson and Morejon have options. I don't see the Padres trading one of their best relievers from last year just to avoid having to option Wilson or Morejon when Crismatt was better than both.
He really crashed and burned at the end and got demoted to AAA and was left off the playoff roster.. thats not good when you have no options and everyone on the 40 has higher ceiling stuff

Crismatt was 1 of 3 total Padres pitchers who had an ERA below 3.00 last year, so he couldn't have crashed that badly. He doesn't throw hard but he has tons of movement and an excellent changeup. He is also making minimum salary and keeping him maximizes the Padres pitching depth. Oh well, we will see. That is what Spring Training is for!

I like the guy don't get me wrong ... But if he is the odd man out because Lopez shows Cease type stuff, then "sell high" he may not be playoffs 26 man roster for us, but all 29 teams, we'll maybe 28..Astros are deeper than us, could probably use a Crismatt or 2

Crismatt was one of our 3 best pitchers first half of last season.
Not as good a second half obviously but he is only 28.
Now that Martinez is in the rotation, who do we count for 4 strong innings when Snell gets shelled and lasts only 2 innings( you know that's bound to happen a half dozen times the first half of the season)?

Quote from fenn68 on February 15, 2023, 7:55 am6 starters … 6 one inning RP to cover 7 - 9 without running the same guys everyday … 1 multi- inning / long RP. Given the way Melvin handles SP, he will push for at least 6 innings. That will not burn out the staff.
a lot of ways to go on the long guy. A LH is a good follow from 5 RHSP.

The following pitchers on the 40 man are LH. Castillo, Cosgrove, Groome, Hader, Hill, Kerr, Morejon, Pomeranz, Snell, and Weathers.
Snell is in the rotation. Hader, Hill, and Pomeranz (if healthy) already have their roles set in the bull pen. Cosgrove and Kerr probably at this point are not options for a World Series caliber team. And Castillo with his injury history, and arsenal should if healthy, be a late inning option.
So for your LHP long guy, the options come down to Groome, Morejon, and Weathers. Of those three, which in your opinion has the least chance of success as a ML SP? Which ever is your answer, he should be the long guy. Allowing the other two to work as a SP in the MiL and be ready for call ups. And out of the three, Morejon probably has the highest potential and the most need for structured pitching to get stretched out and up the innings that he can throw for 2024. So the battle for long man IMO comes down to Groome or Weathers if you want the LH option.
I think the long spot will go to Crismatt, despite being RH. With Groome, Weathers, and Morejon in the MiLs on a SP schedule and getting ready for call ups if needed.

Quote from fenn68 on February 15, 2023, 5:36 pmWill be interesting to see the Padre’s call. One factor may be how concerned they are with that role at the start of the season given the rest of the staff quality and an offense that should score.
might they opt for a Lopez or Honeywell as #13 for the future upside?
Crismatt should have the inside track but?

Forgot to list Lopez. Im not sure why, since I am really pulling for him. Isnt it great that we have such a loaded team that some good pitchers might get traded simply because there is not enough room for them.
These last couple of spots will make for some interesting ST battles.
