I don’t wanna worry about Soto right now, IMO Manny has to be the priority and Soto has some proving to do after last year.

Agree … and if as I suspect they sign Machado then focus on a big money SP next winter … Soto (and Boras) may be gone to the FA market after 2024 without the Padres chasing him to what will be a 15 year deal pushing $40MM AAV.

Wonder if Jake becomes a LF at that point.. (if Soto leaves).. 1B Xander 2B Merrill SS Kim (or reverse 2B and SS if warranted) 3B Manny.. OR is let go all together if someone like Howell or Ornelas shows a new gear in development.  As Zavala climbs as well..

At least we got something to talk about vs last few days crickets.. leading up to next week's start of ST

Wonder how Jake's 3 yr extension would look next offseason based on Bichette $$ and difference in position... 3/$28 with incentives to $34 or so?

Aaron Nola would look really nice at the top of that 2024 pitching rotation!  I hope Austin is talking the Padres up even though he might not be on the team next year.

Pretty amazing that we have Tatis/Bogaerts/Darvish/Musgrove locked up,most likely will lock up Machado and maybe Snell, and we’re still “realistically” thinking we may extend Soto and sign a guy like Nola.

Still blows my mind

Is there any way we let Soto just leave via free agency considering the cost?

Could you imagine a few years from now if Wood,Hassell,Abrams,Gore are all stars?

I have to believe if AJ doesn’t think he has a great chance at extending him he gets traded next off season.

The return will be substantial and much greater than waiting till the deadline.

Could actually still sign Soto in free agency even if he’s traded.
I suspect Padre fans will be split on whether to keep him to keep the best team on the field and risk losing him for nothing….and trading him to recoup some prospects. It’s not like AJ/Seidler wouldn’t still sign some big name with the saved $25 mil

Note:I hope Soto is a Padre for life.Tatis/Soto/Machado/Bogaerts for the next 10 years?

Unreal that it’s even being considered.

I dont think AJP or Seidler would trade him.. they took a risk (prospect wise) to have 3 shots at a WS with Soto .  1st one failed BUT in a way it succeeded too.. NLCS brought Padres Fans to a new level in #'s and in excitement.. we got 2mat least 2 more cracks with Soto... LFGXD

Now in a scenario where we win it ALL in 2023.. and we aren't able to get anywhere with Soto.. I could see a move to re-coup some lost prospect capital or even young ready mlb guys... while still using some or most of the funds allocated to Soto used to get an Othani.. or a couple pieces like Aaron Nola + Joon (Korea kid) CF.. or even a Trifecta of players like the Japanese P coming + Joon and Sonny Gray for same $$ on AAV or close to it vs Soto by himself..

Resigming Soto obviously a priority especially if he has a Soto like year as a Padres...

But 💯 AJP will explore best options for Padres if Soto is not in the cards past 2024

I don’t know man.

Winning a WS changes everything but if we don’t in 23’ and an extension isn’t in the cards, keeping him all of 24’ and losing him for nothing would be a BAD look.

If you are in win now mode, trading a guy that could get you over the hump to a series title just so he can’t leave as a FA is a much worse look IMO.

Its like Trea Turner leaving LAD.. The prospect loss is an accepted risk.. I mean if we were the Red Sox and lost Soto is one thing but if Soto is in the playoffs all 3 yrs and gives us a chance then we ride!

Besides doesn't Xander signing sort of make up for the fact (if we lost Soto) .. another way to look at it long term is we got Soto 3yrs + Xander 11 yrs in that deal..

Read a blurb on MLBTR where CHC are looking to add a LHRP or two. Now there are still some good/decent FA options out there in Chaffin, Britton, Smith, and maybe Hand.

Wondering if SD could get CHC interested in Pomeranz. When healthy, he is probably behind only Chaffin in performance. And since CHC is not really close to the CBT level, they could actually use both Chaffin and Pomeranz, and not need to send someone in a salary offset move. Preller could just get a "lotto" level prospect back, and relieve some money from SD's CBT level.
