2023 offseason

Some details

12:43pm: Darvish’s contract will be heavily front-loaded, tweets Feinsand. He’ll earn $30MM in 2023 — a substantial increase over the $18MM for which he’d previously been slated. That leaves $78MM over the final five seasons.

That’s of particular note given changes in the recent collective bargaining agreement, which stipulate that upon being traded, only the remainder of a player’s contract counts toward the new team’s luxury tax. Previously, the tax hit would remain the same. In other words, a potential trade of Darvish down the road will come with a considerably lighter luxury hit for an acquiring team by virtue of the contract’s front-loaded nature.

========================================================================

The future trade option is good both AAV and cash wise (so a possible before 10/5 rights kick in after 2025. However the front loaded cash might also help the Padres cash flow as they try to extend others on the roster (Machado, Soto, et. al) to longer term deals were the bigger money kicks in after 2023.

Yu velo ticked UP last year from his career norm too... so not worried at all for Yu aging well.. I mean Wainright has lost 5+mph and still a top 3 type SP . And Yu has better offspeed stuff...and a lot better Velo.. so Go Padres!.. Yu here with Joe sets up a HUGE base for our SP going foward..

AJ Cassavell sums it up.. Yu still learning, still growing as a pitcher.. he adjust, invents and copycats pitches like he been throwing them all his life.. very unpredictable all the time.. unlike most pitchers who give you the same stuff time after time.. Yu adapts and pitches batters completely different within games and seasons.. its almost like facing a different pitcher every AB.. that plays in the long run .. as long as the health equation is good

So 2024

1) Yu $18

2) Joe $20

3) Martinez* $16 (2/$32 team option)

*Obviously if Padres pick up Martinez option is because he has Pitched as a SP to the equivalent of $16mil per Worthiness

If not that $16 becomes available for FA in 2024.. It sure would be nice to find 1 or 2 arms that claim 1 or 2 spots in the 3 to 6 scale in 2023 ... and for Mazur /Wolf and others to put themselves in a position to compete in 2024 for that 5th/6th spot .. +2 pre arb SP amongst our 6 in 2024 would be great .. +3 Awesone..

MLB on XM has been doing there Top 10 lists this week, and since I only get to listen on the drive to and from work, havent heard them all.

A couple of them that I have caught. Machado was the #1 3B. I believe that Bogaerts was their #4 SS. SD did not have a SP, C, 1B or 2B, on those lists, but tough for Crone to crack that list, especially with not a lot of power for a 1B. And a little surprised that Kim didnt get any love, especially with Ketel Marte on the list with having a down year in 2022. Hader was #3 for RP.

The big surprise for me was the Corner OF list. The station had both Tatis (#8) and Soto (#3) on the list.

CF has not been released yet.

A final note, one analyst said they thought the CHC could have the best up the middle defense in MLB. A little slap in the face to our guys in SD, with Bogaerts, Kim, and Grisham in tow for SD.

C maybe cost us in the up the middle D equation.. Nola is not regarded as that good defensively.. Campy is a huge ??

Also this is good news for Padres as it brings another big time SP to the FA class in 2024.. sooner or later the JPN players not playing together for one team so as to not take $$ from marketing opportunities from each other is going to end ..why not SDP make it end in 2024...

This is great news as far as I’m concerned

Darvish is rock solid and I would not be surprised if Snell gets the same kind of deal given the fact that Seidler loves him.

I also think that getting both Darvish and Snell extended bodes well for an extension of Manny…another 5 years at 150 million to make it a total of 300 million for 10 years.

then figure out what it takes to extend Soto for 10 years at 450 million…the Padres would have Darvish,Snell,Musgrove Tatis, Boegarts, Soto and Manny together for a long time. It also allows the top prospects to really develop so they don’t have to rebuild…just reload 😃

Go Padres!!!⚾️

Looking for the same kind of extension for Machado - front loaded but reducing or keeping his AAV the same.  These veterans are realistic about baseball longevity and money up front is money they can use now for whatever purpose suits them.  Who knows what the dollar will be worth 10 years from now?
