MLBTR had an interesting thought on the timing of some of the remaining FA being signed. Basically every team (except Houston) has a full 40 man roster but many of those teams also have candidates for the 60 day IL to start the season. At some point in ST players can start being moved to the 60 day IL.

Just going under the assumption that no team wants to DFA a current player unless they have to … could some teams have struck  FA deals that become official in conjunction with the first chance of a 60 day IL move? (Note: Padres currently don NOT have a 60 day IL candidate).

I guess potentially a trade could be held up for the same reason … a rostered player for a non-rostered player … with the team picking up the rostered player not wanting to DFA to make room.

So, maybe the remaining FA and some minor trades will resume consistent with the first day of 60 day IL eligibility.

I think the date is Feb 14th and isn't Eguy Rosario a candidate?

I was also thinking that Rosario is a 60 day IL candidate, and I would love a Gamel signing as the corresponding move. Should be an inexpensive sign, LHH who has decent numbers BA and OBP wise, and if his legs are healthy, can cover all 3 spots.

Forgot about him.

Although I suspect that the Padres have players they would be willing to DFA for a good add … but Rosario to the IL could be move #1

Who would you drop from the 13 position players on the 26 man active roster?

Engel, Azocar, Carpenter, Cruz, Campusano after Tatis returns?

Well, you cant drop Campusano since he is the back up C, Carpenter is going to be a good bat IMO, and Cruz IMO his importance is going to be some timely hits and chemistry/leadership, Engel and Azocar are about the same guy, but Azocar I believe still has options, so he would be fine being in AAA and getting at bats everyday.

If they were to sign Gamel, it becomes a ST battle between Engel, Dahl, and Gamel to make the team. Engel could be a lock for his CF defense. So it would come down to Gamel and Dahl, and I think Gamel would win that battle.

So Azocar goes after the return of Tatis.

It is Feb 14th

I dont think Gamel itd signed if he wants a MLB deal.. MILB sure.. depth in the OF after Engel/Azocar/Dixon/Dahl goes to Howell/Ornelas/Kohlwey.. is very ??? Filled.. and Gamel is a proven commodity perhaps > than all above for 2023

I think we should sign Chris Archer and/or Cole Hamels.. to milb deals with invites

If they were willing to take minor league deals with a minimal major league salary I think guys like Peralta, Grossman, Naquin, Gamel, and Solano could be useful. I don't think we're going to commit to any more than that financially for anyone left on the market.

Same goes on the pitching side. There are guys left I think they would bring in on a low cost deal, but getting them to take it is a different story. I think most of those guys would want to go somewhere with a clearer opportunity. Both Martinez and Lugo want to be starters and signed deals that reward them for succeeding as starters. They are going to get their chance to seize a rotation spot. I would think the guys that are left on the market would want to go somewhere where they'll have an easier path than they would joining a healthy mix competing to be a 6th starter or depth option.
