2023 offseason

Clearly liked by Preller and the team.
So what do you think the defense alignment would like with a Grisham trade and back fill of Profar. Same as last season with Profar in LF, Soto in RF, and Tatis replaces Grisham in CF.
Or do you go Soto in LF, Engel/Azocar in CF, and Tatis in RF with Profar being a late inning defensive replacement for Soto and giving Soto the occasional day of from fielding?
Wish Profar could handle CF.
Profar in LF - Tatis in CF - Soto in RF ... not my favorite alignment but the trade-off for a legit mid-rotation arm still may make the overall team better. I see zero chance of using Engel / Azocar as "regular" CF options ... maybe if Tatis injured only.
If Profar is signed ... he is a starter.
=======
IF Kim goes ... Cronenworth to 2B and Carpenter / Profar cover 1B and combine with Cruz for DH coverage.
=======
In either option Azocar could be optioned given Engel and Profar's versatility to make room for a different position player if that made sense. Basically a bench/DH of Campusano / Cruz / Carpenter (L) / Engel / TBD ... might want another LHH or a middle INF reserve (depending on who is traded).

Quote from BoosterSD on January 18, 2023, 11:05 amIn either case of a Grisham trade or not, and the performance in ST of Engel, Azocar might be best served in AAA, getting everyday ABs and being a plane flight away for injury issues.
And yes, IF we can get the right SP arm, I can see how the team might be better off with the trade of Grisham or Kim.
I know the team like Profar, but man I really like the speed offered from Berti, wish he could get worked into a potential deal with MIA.
And I still think a trade of Pomeranz and Kepler make sense for both teams. And Kepler would soften the blow of trading of Grisham.

If we are going down this rabbit hole ..what's the difference in going Bauer? From a pure position fit we need another BP arm like I need a pimple I n my ass... Bauer at minimum and SP fit is too good to ignore
Either say NO to both or at least get the one that addresses a need... the PR backlash would be too much for Bauer I get it... But Chapman really?... no need at all for him or his character...

I would say no to both. Dont see the need for Chapman.
But come on, there is a bit of a difference between the deviant behavior of Bauer and Chapman not coming back to NY at the end of a season when they had already told him he would not make the playoff team. Sure, it was a D*@k move by Chapman. But it can not be compared to what Bauer was involved with during his suspension and investigations.

Actually I think most of these reports have an autofill with "the Padres are also interested" and really don't have to think about it.

My guess is this is why Othani had rumors that the Padres would be all in on him next offseason. Padres seem to look at everyone and spend lots of money so those who want to act like they have any info just throw out padres.

Quote from fenn68 on January 18, 2023, 3:52 pmI note that MLBTR are again speculations on the Red Sox dealing Tanner Houck who has been good out of the pen but not really stretched out as a SP. Apparently “tweeted” his motion and his velo / effectiveness has jumped and is considered to be a SP candidate … that is upside. On the other hand had lumbar surgery but SHOULD be ready for ST … that is downside. Another concern is with BOST being a last place team and likely that again in 2023 … why is he not a SP?
Bottom line (if BOST really wants to deal him) … would he make sense for the Padres to compete with pitchers in similar state like Lugo, Morejon, et al? Boston wants a ML starting middle INF … that suggests Kim (not Rosario) is the only trade chip. Would save the Padres $7MM if just a straight up deal … could be used to bolster the depth and provide a buffer vs going past the next threshold. Houck is league minimum with 5 years control so potential long term values beyond what he might provide in 2023 … however Kim is currently way more valuable than Houck (justifies the dollar difference) but would the Padres be comfortable with Carpenter at 1B full time and Cruz at DH full time (unless the make another back-up move).
In my view this is a secondary option after the Miami SP.

The Padres are not going to trade a GG caliber, 5.1 WAR SS for a starting pitcher that can't even start for the Red Sox. Quality starter, maybe. Houck? Not close.
