2023 offseason

I guess my train of thought is different. I think that we have enough offense/guys to cover the trades of Kim and Grisham. Sure, the combo of Engel/Dahl/Azocar/Batten/Dixon all have warts, but the additions of Bogaerts, Carpenter, Cruz makes me think we can survive on defense and offense in the event of a move of Kim and/or Grisham.

What makes me worried is SP. After Darvish, Musgrove, and Snell the warts on the remaining SP options IMO are worse than the warts on the position players. When was the last time that Snell went from bell to bell in a season, let alone for the Padres. There is no way SD can rely on Martinez being the 3rd SP option should one of the big three go down.

I agree, Preller is in the catbird seat, and does not need to make a move to make a move. But the right move, for the right SP, would not only be prudent, but wise. Even with the offense that SD has, this team will go only as far as the pitching takes them especially in the playoffs, and that is dangerously thin on the starting side IMO.

And as far as CBT goes, I personally think that they are already over the $273M mark, so need reason to get bashful now. This is the season guys, too many FA SP able to walk out the door after 2023, along with Machado.

If you can get the right deal for Kim or Grisham or Kim and Grisham do it, and then push forward and back fill with some combo of Profar, Diaz, Michael A Taylor.

CBT penalties, 92%! World Series Championship Trophy......priceless!!

This has been my point.

Our offense is MUCH better than last years and we were 3 wins away from the World Series.

Our pitching may not be worse but counting on the top 3 to pitch just as well or better than last year AND stay 100% healthy is asking a lot.

Even if we traded Kim AND Grisham(not saying we should) our offense would still be better than last year.

But hoping for 1-2 guys to "break out" from the 5-6 guys we've picked up is asking a lot.

I'm in the "trade Kim for a SP" camp.I would prefer to hold on to Grisham as GG defense in CF is valuable no matter what he hits AND we've basically cornered the market on middle infielders and are low on outfielders as it is....also because I am not a fan of the Tatis to CF idea.

Put him in RF and Soto in LF for the next 10 years

Or Elly De La Cruz ???

See what I did there...

No, I dont.

Sanchez in JPN 160.2 IP.. 3.81 last 2 aeasons

It appears more and more likely that we will NOT be trading for a SP and instead will be throwing 6-7 against the wall and hoping 1-2 stick.

How many fringe major league Starters have we added this off season?

Better hope Snell pumps up for a contract/walk year and posts well for SD this season. Would benefit both sides for him to be healthy on the top of his game this season, a full season including playoffs.

Last yr we used 28 Pitchers.. so I am sure after the 1st 4.. we will see at least 8 others start games for us.. how many games all depends on Health of the 1st 4 and how well some of these other guys pitch

If Clevinger and Manaea had pitched like Joe all season we wouldn't have needed to use 28 pitchers.

I don't want  a repeat if possible considering that was also with the top 3 making just about every start.

I trust AJ to make a trade if it's a good trade and not if it isn't....just hoping for the former.

I am sure Preller wants a strong mid-upper rotation SP added but we may be underestimating the real availability of that quality of SP from any team … at least for Kim or Grisham. Padres are not trading either for the next Manaea or Groome and the HOPE they will improve for 2023.

Negotiations will continue (just what Preller does) … but in the interim just fill the basket with lottery players because some will be needed. Does not cost much and no long term commitment.

The pitching choices for EP will be difficult when you consider the 40 man roster players sent down … some AA pitchers trying to move up … and a very long list of veteran options returning / just signed. Probably 2 arms for each slot. Just an interesting sub-plot to the main story of the Padres.

One prospect who maybe a sleeper at AA and could possibly challenge for a start or more in 2023 at some point is the kid we picked up earlier in the offseason Brito

Not typical SP as he has always been a RP..but definetely a multiple inning guy as you can see.. could pitch well enough to bump him up into a Crismatt type role ..especially if Crismatt is dealt.. maybe not right away.. but this kid been buried in his previous org and with SD thin at AA in P could make a quantum leap
