I think Siedler is ok blowing past it for the right add now or at the deadline aka Othani.. Sonny Gray..etc.. I dont think either is ok with resigning Profar and going over.. he does not move the neddle

I would say this is not the right time let alone identifying the right player. Padres are already considered one of the best in MLB ... might want to wait to be sure the next add (if any) is targeting the biggest need down the stretch ... and that may not be SP. Dealing with unnecessarily taking the penalty for crossing the threshold and dealing a very limited set of trade chips now could put some real issues in swinging a trade deadline deal(s).

Injuries are not limited to SP ... think the issue if Nola is lost for the season or if Hader/Suarez go down. Alternatively if Darvish, Snell, Musgrove deliver ... maybe the add to replace an under performing  Martinez / Lugo does not have to be that costly as a bottom of the rotation arm at the deadline as a rental.

Confident in the current roster for now ... wait to let ST play out and see who is healthy and performing to set the 26 man and make the initial assessment of the prospects being sent to the minors. At the same time see if a quality SP is made available at in a better deal for the Padres. See if they want to (and can) deal a Pomeranz, Garcia, Hader (all FA after the season) to make payroll space for a more critical add ... and that scenario is boosted on the health / performance of who would replace them.

TEX just took a hit to the LHRP due to injury of Brett Martin having shoulder surgery. TEX has been throwing money around this offseason, maybe Preller still knows the system well enough, that Preller can work a trade of Pomeranz for a hidden gem somewhere from in the TEX MiL system.

At this point he's probably worth more to us hoping he stays healthy and dominates the 7th/8th innings.

Then maybe,depending on the health and productivity of our Pen,we could trade him at the deadline ala the Brewers trading Hader.

If he stays healthy and pitches well we will probably prefer to keep him...but if everyone is healthy and performing he could be expendable to another contender....either for a player we need to fill in somewhere or for a prospect(s).

Bottom line I think we at least start the season with him and go from there.

Yeah the thing with trading Crismatt/Garcia or Pomeranz is any of the 3 could easily be in different deals and not necessarily for 2023 pieces.. which is a good thing
