2023 offseason
Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 12, 2023, 7:46 amQuote from MrPadre19 on January 12, 2023, 7:17 amI still wouldn't be too surprised if it came true.
The Marlins are trading a SP or even two.
While just about every contender could use one not everyone has major league pieces to trade like Kim.
I hope we keep him but as I've said before I'd rather feel better about our rotation for this year and beyond and i doubt we can get one of their SP's and keep Kim so.....
I'd rather move on from Fish SP and go get a cheaper (trade cost wise) guy like Lauer or Houser now to be honest.. still controlled beyond 2023.. but either won't cost 1/2 as much..and if I can keep Kim (who is going to keep getting better and better) at least for 2023.. we will be that much better for it...
Lauer is my preference (likely Brewers too since $$ in arb is proj to be +$2 mil more vs Houser)..
Lauer is not Lopez or Luzardo etc.. BUT we need inning eater not #3 or better SP.. we need a 4th/5th type.. which Lauer is
What would it take for Lauer?
Cristmatt + Morejon ?... I'd do that
If AJP really wants a difference maker at SP, I'd go after an ACE type like KC Singer AND yes Merrill +++ would go to KC in such a deal.. But he is controlled for a long long time and is a true Ace.. not a projected one or an overhyped #3 /#4.. that we may regret trading Kim or Grish for in 2023....(after 2023 sure we need to trade one or the other as FA 2024-25 has both in it along with Soto) ..I'd like to run it back with the elite D guys + the adds in 2023 1st though
** by the way I know Lauer would equal Over treshold..and would need a secondary trade of Garcia $3.5 or Pomz $8.5 as the logical $$match piece.. also Cristmatt 2022 body of work 0.7 WAR and 2.94 ERA was terrific But I personally see some regression with Nabil.. so sell a bit high on him..

Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 12, 2023, 8:25 amArbitration deadline is tomorrow.. so I expect AJP to sign most if not all his arb players today or tomorrow morning..I also expect Brewers to possibly trade 1 SP and maybe even their 1B Tellez or Urias
**I could see one or 2 BP arms traded by AJP soon

Quote from BoosterSD on January 12, 2023, 8:53 amWhat if there was a blockbuster trade between MIA and SD?
SD gets Luzardo, Garrett, and Wendle. MIA gets Kim, Grisham, Campusano, and Crismatt.
Opens up a 40/26 man spot for Cruz and saves about $4M in salary for 2023 since both Luzardo and Garrett are league min, and Wendle is around $$5.4M according to MLBTR with Kim and Grisham being about $9.6M. Leaving money for SD to make a deadline deal or two, when/if needed.
SD either goes with Severino as back up C, or resigns Alfaro for back up. SD would either go with an Engel/Dahl combo in CF, or could trade for Michael A. Taylor for CF, but that would eat up the money savings from the MIA deal. Crone stays at 2B, Cruz as main DH, and Carpenter mans 1B. Carpenter may not be the best bet for an entire season at 1B, but he should be the same or a little better than Hosmer, which SD had at 1B for the majority of the first half of the season.
SD has two young cheap controllable SPs that can help both this year, and going forward

Remember tomorrow is the date to exchange numbers … but contracts can still be negotiated until the the arbitrator’s decision. Probably some contracts will be done now … but more time.

.255 .321 .510 .831 I always look at how hitters have done at Petco (lets face it Petco is a different animal)... Nelson Cruz #'s above .. pretty decent in almost 60 ABs

Seabold is an interesting DFA.. some (Fangraphs #7) had him >Groome in the Red Sox system last yr.. sure he got rocked like a pinata last yr at Boston .but his FIP was nearly 50% of his actual ERA and his AAA numbers were pretty solid.. not saying he is our SP or anything ...I just think he would improve our upside vs Poppen or Brooks (AAA) ..probably a moot point since he is almost 💯 going to be claimed by a lot of teams ahead of us..

Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 12, 2023, 10:11 amShould we use Morejon and maybe Baez in a package for a SP?
I mean Adrian is what 2 yrs away from being able to give us 120 IP or so .and we need SP NOW and in 2024.. by the time Morejon is ready we will have Mazur and Lizarraga ready to go.. and if we have learned one thing about Morejon is that he wears out (see 2022) after like 50 IP max..so not sure if he ever gets even to 100 IP.. still his stuff in short bursts screams elite BP arm, maybe Closer..but I can't see him starting 30 and giving us 130-150 IP anytime soon (2025 if everything goes right at the soonest).. sure we can try him in a Nick Martinez role sooner than later and he could find at least his rhythm there but avg..of 100 IP 23+24 seems like a pipedream ... his value is pretty high though at this moment..and should fetch us (at least along with some other pieces) a guy like Lauer who may not have the upside of Morejon but does have the track record of a solid #4-#5 type... Morejon is also kind of the project type arm the Brewers always seem to want added to their team..

Not sure how anyone could say this?
We need a #3 OR BETTER SP for this year AND, more importantly, beyond this year.
If we make the playoffs and even just one of Yu/Joe/Snell aren't healthy we won't go far against the teams ahead of us who have better, and deeper, rotations.
Yes we can make a move at the deadline but considering our situation beyond 23' why wait?
Also when you consider Kim's value right now probably couldn't be higher it just makes too much sense to not wait.

Quote from Randy Manese on January 12, 2023, 11:42 amFrom Fenn:
"13 pitchers on the active roster … but 25 pitchers on the 40 man … some on the bubble types without minor league options and no clear cut 6th starter.
There are 11 “probable” for the final 13: Darvish; Musgrove; Snell; Martinez; Lugo; Hader; Suarez; Pomeranz; Garcia; Hill; Wilson; (all are potential trade chips)
The remaking 2 come out of:
4 players without minor league options: Crismatt; Lopez; Poppin; Honeywell (trade chips, DFA candidates, Lopez returned to original club as a Rule 5)
10 that could be optioned: Morejon; Groome; Weathers; Avila; Knehr; Filipe; Baez; Castillo; Cosgrove; Kerr (all trade chips … but no need unless a good return."
My guess is that because we need some early length in the bullpen and possibly a 6th or piggyback starter, we will option out both Hill and Wilson (who have options) and keep Morejon and Groome while adding Crismatt and retaining Lopez. As Fenn mentions, several of these (I'm looking at Hill, Crismatt, Garcia) could be traded and I agree that it is likely Poppin will be the DFA person. It is possible we will try to sneak Honeywell through if he shows a healthy arm in spring training and the other possibility is that Pomeranz goes on the IL again.
