2023 offseason
Quote from MrPadre19 on January 11, 2023, 4:07 amBecause we need SP beyond 2023.
Guys like Lopez/Cabrera/Luzardo from Mia will cost Merrill.
IMO Walter from Bos is a better option to be a #5 SP for us this year and maybe a #3 the next 5 yrs. than Groome or Knehr or most everyone we currently have…. but if they have better SP available AJ likes more than great…..not named Sale that is.
Plus any trade suggestions are just that….player(s), or $,may need to be added either way to balance them out.
Bos. needs a middle infielder…we need SP and OF and we have depth at middle infield.
I’m pretty sure there’s still a trade to be made before opening day so it’s why it’s being discussed.
Because we need SP beyond 2023.

Merrill ain't going anywhere unless the return is Alcantara...
Miami is in Win now mode (at least it appears like it with Segura and Cueto signings).. for NOW and future the most likely trade chip is Pablo Lopez which also seems to be the best fit for SD in 2023..and 2024...Even with the extra 1/2 season of control Lopez is about 50% or less the value of Castillo (Mariners) so look at what Mariners gave up and 1/2;it . Then add the CF Florida wants from the equation in Grisham... and we are pretty close

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 11, 2023, 6:01 amThere is no way Miami is in win now mode.
They are clearly the 4th best team in that division.
IMO they are trying to trade from depth for youngish major leaguers at positions of need to "get" into win now mode in the next 2-3 seasons.
That's why they may not want Kim who is at $7mil plus only 2 years control unless we were to take someone like Soler.
But they may want Grisham/Campy/Rosario?

Which is why I was looking at Bos and a less "expensive" option.Plus they may want Kim more than Miami would now.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 11, 2023, 6:12 amQuote from 3fingersplit on January 10, 2023, 9:56 pmWhy do some of you insist on trading Kim, Grisham and whoever else?
Everybody mentioned is just a guy and none of them upgrade the Padres but moving Kim, Grisham for anything less than a totally legit #3 starting pitcher is just noise....I get it...people are bored but some of these trades are borderline ridiculous...3 team deals and moving 5 or 6 guys for nothing more than 3 or 4 guys doesn't put this team over the top and without Kim last year this team doesn't make the playoffs and the same can be said about Grisham....you don't trade away GG defense for just guys.
Now regarding a SP....Cueto is gone but Michael Wacha is still available....No QO from the Red Sox so no draft compensation and could be had for maybe 7 to 8 million...if healthy a legit piece for the starting rotation and better yet...don't have to trade Kim, Grisham or anybody else...save those moves for the trade deadline if needed.
7 or 8 million becomes more like 12 million with the penalties (we are 6mil under atm) including loss of roughly $700k and 10 slots in next yrs draft. . Wacha aint worth that..
The reality is that IF we are going to keep the Fearsome 4 here for the next decade + together.. we going to need cheap controlled talent surrounding them and ours is a bit away down the road.. Kim's and Grish future with the team is maybe this season and then move on from both..because $$ they earn or will earn beyond 2023 will be too much to carry while resigning and/or extending Manny and Soto..and putting together a WS SP staff...
With control and coming off incredible season Kim has HUGE value atm and can get that cheaper controllable player/s we need to avoid tax penalties and draft penalties.. Grish 2x GG from a chemistry perspective is probably an easier loss than the ultra popular Kim.. But one of the 2 needs to be move (again) FOR a controllable #3 or better SP ... the Soto trade depleted our ammunition (trade chips aka prospects) and $$ concerns have also handcuffed us somewhat in that prospect trades only add to the $$ problems and don't solve them.. so we need to -$$ to +$$.. and Kim $7 and Pomz $8,5 are the ideal candidates to aliviate that BUT Grish maybe the best fit to at least 1 of the SP rich teams (the Marlins)..
We can take the risk on 2023 as we are.. BUT our SP beyond 3 is very un -tested , be it IP wise /in new roles SP vs BP or simply rookies being asked to step up..or a former AS being counted on to be his old self.. Again we could be fine BUT we could also be in trouble with arguably the best Team Padres have ever put together.. and it would be a shame to waste that opportunity to win #1 WS..in 2023

I think the Grish + Campy and Rosario package gets pretty close to a done deal for Pablo .. and from a Padres perspective is a good solid move .. 8.5 vs 3.2 in $$ would be super close to the 273 if not over by a bit... one of Garcia $3.5..or Pomz $8.5.. would likely need to be move to keep us under.. Severino $2 milish would be the backup C so that $$ needs to be accounted for too.. and Pomz really would be the one $$ wise to cover the $$ portion of the equation..with really the only other option at $7 being Kim..
I dont want to move either as well BUT unless Lopez becomes Rogers/Luzardo or Cabrera .. and the $$ and draft dropage is a concern then thats the price we got to pay.. if Siedler and AJP don't care about the $$ and the penalty. . For a quality add like Lopez.. then OK.. no further moves besides the original trade

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 11, 2023, 6:24 amThis is all why trading Kim "now" makes the most sense.
We have the infield covered and his value may be at an all time high and several teams have pitching and need middle infielders.
Maybe AJ waits till the deadline or next off season but I'd feel a lot better if we had another mid rotation SP now and for the next 2-3 years in the fold.
Maybe we get lucky and find a diamond in the rough with Teheran,Groome,Honeywell etc.
I have little faith in Avila or Knehr being anything more than a fringe #5 so if we don't add another known qty we will need to hope and pray while stretching out Morejon and Lugo and simultaneously hope Weathers figures out what happened.
Too many question marks for a team built to win now so it makes you believe something is going to happen on the trade market.

One, I dont think that Luzardo is "just" a guy. He is an impact LHSP that is controlled for 4 years. He had a WHIP of 1.037 with an ERA of 3.32. He should be able to pump out 150-170 innings this season, and would replace Snell next season should Snell be lost to FA.
Two, regarding Grisham and his defense. Did you all forget how many on here were calling for his head, and practically releasing him in during the middle of the season last year when his defense slipped for a month or so. It might not have been you 3 finger, but many were.
Three, Wacha could be a decent piece, and had a good season last year. But with where SD is at CBT wise, Wachas $7M in reality becomes $12M with penalties.
Four, yes Kim was vital to SD playoff run last season, but he has been replaced by Bogaerts. Crone is still here and is a GG caliber 2B as well. So this season Kims real value to SD could be as a trade piece, same with Grisham.
Five, yes SD could wait until the trade deadline to make a move. But if one of Darvish, Snell, Musgrove goes down early, SD could be screwed. You cant win the division in April or May, but you can lose it then. Plus, if Kim or Grisham gets hurt, then they lose their trade value, dont they. So either way is a risk, just when do you want to take that risk?

Quote from fenn68 on January 11, 2023, 6:55 amGetting a reliable proven SP better than Martinez / Lugo and at least mid-rotation quality is my objective … and allow me to consider moving Kim or Grisham.
However, don’t want to fall in the trap of trying to project unproven or rebound pitchers for 2023 … the risk in them is just too great to offset the lost of a Kim / Grisham. Then actually getting a backfill out of the remaining FA may sound good … but there is a reason none of the 30 teams have signed them yet … group is pretty picked over.
This roster is already projected as a 100 win team and with the METS the best in the NL … Padres don’t need to make a panic deal at this point. IF the right deals falls in their lap fine …if not fine and kick the can down the line.
Frankly the only team that has the reported willingness to move a mid-rotation arm is MIA … others either don’t have that arm or just not willing to move one for Kim or Grisham.
Not holding my breath for a big deal.

Quote from fenn68 on January 11, 2023, 7:39 amListening to a very depressing assessment of the Red Sox for 2023. Remember they were in last place in the AL East last season … gone are Bogaerts, Martinez, and now Story … middle INF is down to Hernandez … C is down to a veteran part timer in McGuire … SP is assessed as “thin” … Devers will have zero protection in the line-up.
They may end up challenging OAK for the worst in the AL. Not a scenario where they would seek a Kim as a two year filler. More likely they scrounge around the remaining FA on one year deals (Andrus?)
