He also dealt with "personal issues" wonder if that was mental health issues being traded from Boston to Detroit.. perhaps..other issue/s.. so price tag keeps coming down here...

San Diego lots of Latin players..nice weather .. and winning ..would go a long way towards any issues (if indeed mental) and fixing them

Trade for a long control / low cost SP maybe the best option for 2023 and beyond.

If this is the case, then we have to look at trading Grisham and Kim, saving about $10M in AAV and getting those young SP at the same time.

Then got to live with a CF combo of Engel/Dahl, defense is probably close to Grisham, and the bats BA and OBP will be similar, but not the power of Grisham, which SD should be able to handle. And also leads to Crone staying at 2B, and then a platoon of Carpenter/?? at 1B. Maybe an Aguilar or Voit signing?? Not sure you can trust Dixon or Batten on a WS caliber team.

Even if it does and it could (plus dont forget Niebla being able to help him), the money is still the biggest issue, his AAV is $15.4M. That would be close to $30M with the CBT penalties SD is looking at right now. Like I said, DET would have to include money for at least this season, for SD to be able to look at this deal.

I can only imagine the Marlins are getting calls from just about every team in baseball right now.

Contenders and non contenders.

They have an excess of major league ready cheap/controllable Starters AND some that are still 1-3 years away.

Should have someone for everyone....lol

That being said...maybe a 3 team deal with SD/Pit/Mia?

SD and Pit get SP's with Miami getting Reynolds.

Pit also getting prospects from SD/Mia.

Out of the Box SP who fits perfectly and who would benefit from Petco and contending team..and would help TIGERS $$ wise

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rodried05.shtml

SP Eduardo Rodriguez

Owed 4/64.. $15.400 AAV

So Pomz + Castillo (Tigers add $10 mil and we could fit him under)

What else do we need to add? Tigers one of those teams that would take quantity down the line specs

Not sure why that deal would appeal to DET? If Rodriguez is that good and worth his contract they surely could get a better return for some other team rather than Pomeranz (one year, $10MM contract, and no evidence he still can pitch or stay healthy through the season) plus a second LHRP who has not been able to stay healthy in his career.

If he is not that good why would the Padres want to take on his contract … breach the threshold (pay the premium penalty).

Not convinced a career 4+ ERA is worth the $15MM plus penalty money … not a top or mid rotation arm. Note: he also can opt out after 2023.

I read an article.. cant find it now..that Snell maybe be a trade chip IF TWO controllable SP could be added..

So Snell $10.. Kim $7.. Jake $4,2? ..Grish $2.6?..  Pomz $8.5.. Garcia $3.5.. Castillo $750k.. to me would be the "trade pool".. with Jake the least likely by a country mile..

$$$ are all AAV and not actual salary.. ? Represent arb estimates..

AJP needs to balance exodus of players vs chemistry, net upgrades and in house answers (be it to replace them or to address a need)...

We are talking about replacing/upgrading 2022.. currently (based on 22 contributions as Padres only..and avgs for Xander and Tatis) we are a 100+ Win team with a +15.5 WAR (net proj gain vs 2022)...as we are right here and now

That is a pretty feasible base idea. Miami trying to improve for 2023 would love Reynolds .. Pitt would like SP prospects … SD would like a ML SP. The part that is hard to evaluate is how much PITT would demand for Reynolds (rumors are that it would be a lot more than a couple of very good SP prospects) and what SD would have to throw into the mix to PITT to justify getting the SP.

Guessing that Grisham would have to go to PITT in this scenario … maybe the same pieces we have been suggesting (eg Campusano) may have to go to PITT.

PITT would be the problem child in this scenario given their lofty demands.

I didn't say Pomz and Castillo for ER.. I didn't put forth a specific deal just that both would be included as part of the deal.. and I did day Det would pay down some of his $$owed...

As far as $$ for a 4+ERA SP

We signed a 4.30 ERA (2022 as SP).. to a potential option 2/32 ($16mil per),deal.. in their careers Cabrera is closer to Pablo Lopez than he is to Nick Mart..and has an absolutely sexy winning % if your into W/L records

Marlins signing Cueto gives Padres an opportunity to get one of Marlins young "surplus" pitchers.  Don't think we have enough or want to give up current players/prospects to get Lopez, however, may be able to pull off a Cabrera, Rogers or Luzardo deal.  I like the lefties (Rogers and Luzardo) over Cabrera but it really depends upon what we would have to give up.

Certainly, there will be strong competition for these young controllable pitchers; I just hope we don't give up any of our big 4 - Merrill, Zavala, Lesko and Lizarraga.  Marlins probably want  one or more of these players - Grisham, Kim and/or Campusano besides a next tier lower level prospect.  If Marlins willing to include Berti and take one of our more pricey RP's (Hill or Garcia), then could have a deal since that kind of package could potentially reduce our AAV.

In this scenario, SD would keep Grisham??
