The price of the deal is very reasonable, so either SD wasnt as interested as we thought, or money is getting tighter as we approach the top this CBT level.

In reality, for the price of the deal, disappointed that SD didnt get this done. After Darvish and Musgrove, every other SP on SD roster has warts, including Snell. We still need some one like Cueto that can eat innings. Cueto threw 30 more innings than Snell did, that is 5-6 starts. Although Snell can at times, be a lot more dominant than Cueto.

maybe the deal gets bigger and Campusano / Rosario could go to MIA for a bigger return (thinking a quality SP prospect or two in addition to Luzardo). Would be a move to set-up 2024 with only Musgrove guarenteed to return as a SP.

If they need bench/AAA help, and realizing that MIA is still budget conscious, and if they are looking for C help as Henry suggests. Then we can expand the deal.

SD gets Luzardo, Berti, Sixto Sanchez. MIA gets Grisham, Campusano, Rosario, and Batten. For MIA this should work, since Rosario and Berti are the same player, just Rosario is cheaper and longer control, Batten gives them another league minimum bench player, and Campusano gets SD Sanchez, a controllable SP that should be ready for 2023 or 24, and looks to be surpassed by other prospects in MIA minors system.

SD goes with Soto in LF, Engel/Dahl, Tatis in RF. Azocar in the MiL for injury/performance coverage of Engel or Dahl.

And not a lot of high level performance either. Preller has a move or two up his sleeve, or he is planning on winning a lot of game 7-5 with our line up.

Fine recipe for the regular season, not so good for the playoffs though.

That is a lot to give for Cueto who … despite how we have been evaluating his value … no other team in MLB was interested in signing and Miami can get for only $6MM. I think we may be over valuing Cueto considering how the teams approached his FA.

Sure seems as though the Padres will not breach the next threshold for marginal adds or even exhaust the remaining payroll space and get backed into breaching the threshold if an injury pushes them to deal for an add from the outside.

Trade for a long control / low cost SP maybe the best option for 2023 and beyond.

I dont know, DET ball park is not exactly a hitters paradise, so not sure that Petco would help that much, and he has only twice pitched more than 140 innings. That is a big $63M gamble.

Even if DET was willing to go Pomeranz for Rodriguez, that would still be an AAV increase of $6.9M for SD. Not sure Rodriguez is worth that hit salary wise. Maybe if DET was willing to add $5M in cash this season at least, it could be worth talking.
